CHAPTER 5 THE MAN WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO DIE

Marcus didn't answer.
For several seconds, he simply stared at Richard Lawson, waiting for him to admit it was some cruel misunderstanding.
He never did.
The hallway outside the ICU suddenly felt much colder.
"My father died twenty-two years ago," Marcus said quietly. "The police investigated. There were witnesses. The case was closed."
Richard nodded.
"I know."
"So why are you telling me this now?"
Richard opened the encrypted case file on his laptop.
A grainy photograph appeared.
An overturned black sedan at the bottom of a ravine.
Flashing police lights.
Rain.
Twisted steel.
Marcus had seen that image hundreds of times growing up.
It had haunted every birthday.
Every anniversary.
Every Christmas.
"My father lost control of the car," Marcus said automatically.
"That's what everyone believed," Richard replied.
He zoomed in on the photograph.
"There."
Marcus leaned closer.
A small puncture mark on the rear wheel.
Hardly noticeable.
Richard opened another forensic report.
"The tire wasn't damaged in the crash."
"It had been pierced before the vehicle left the road."
Marcus's heartbeat quickened.
"Sabotage."
Richard nodded once.
"Someone wanted the accident to happen."
Before Marcus could speak again, his phone vibrated.
One new message.
Unknown number.
No text.
Only a photograph.
Marcus froze.
The image showed Khloe.
Not tonight.
Not at the hospital.
She looked younger.
Maybe twenty-two.
Standing beside a man whose face had been deliberately blurred.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written five words in black ink.
SHE LIED BEFORE SHE MET YOU.
Marcus's fingers tightened around the phone.
Richard saw the picture.
His expression darkened.
"They're playing with you."
"Or telling the truth."
Marcus didn't know which possibility frightened him more.
Across the city...
The former "janitor" sat inside an abandoned warehouse.
The flash drive containing the original security footage rested on an old wooden table.
He had watched the missing thirty-seven seconds twelve times.
Each viewing left him more unsettled.
Because what he saw defied logic.
He pressed play again.
Khloe stumbled backward after Isabella shoved her.
She struck the marble table.
Everything matched the edited recording.
Then...
A hidden side door opened.
Not the main entrance.
Not visible from inside the room.
A narrow service door concealed behind decorative wall panels.
A man entered.
He wore a black suit.
Black gloves.
His face remained hidden beneath the brim of a cap.
He walked directly toward Khloe.
She looked up.
Not frightened.
Recognizing him.
The man knelt beside her for exactly six seconds.
His right hand disappeared beneath her left shoulder.
When he stood again...
Something tiny glittered between his fingers.
The microchip.
He had removed it.
Before anyone else arrived.
Before Marcus entered.
Before the doctors.
Then the man vanished through the same hidden door.
Only after he disappeared did Marcus burst into the suite.
The janitor replayed those six seconds again.
And again.
One question echoed through his mind.
If the stranger had already taken the microchip...
Then what had the surgeons removed hours later?
At the hospital...
Dr. Emily Carter walked into the pathology laboratory carrying the sealed evidence bag.
"I need a complete analysis."
The technician nodded.
He carefully placed the chip beneath a high-powered microscope.
Minutes passed.
Then his forehead creased.
"Doctor..."
"What?"
"This isn't an implant."
He adjusted the focus.
"It's a shell."
"A shell?"
"It looks like a microchip..."
"...but there's no processor."
"No transmitter."
"No memory."
"Nothing."
Dr. Carter frowned.
"So what is it?"
The technician swallowed.
"A decoy."
Silence filled the laboratory.
Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make the object appear genuine.
Meaning...
The real device was gone before surgery ever began.
Meanwhile...
Isabella Rossi sat alone in a luxury holding suite under constant security.
She was technically not under arrest.
Not yet.
But Marcus had ordered that she remain inside the hospital until police arrived.
She smiled to herself.
They were all chasing ghosts.
No one had asked the most important question.
A soft knock came at the door.
One guard opened it.
"A lawyer is here."
The attorney entered carrying an expensive leather briefcase.
Gray suit.
Silver tie.
Perfect posture.
The guard searched the briefcase.
Nothing suspicious.
After the guards stepped outside, the lawyer smiled politely.
"They're listening."
"I know."
Without moving his lips, he whispered,
"Protocol Two has started."
Isabella's confident smile faded.
"So soon?"
He gave the slightest nod.
"You've become... expendable."
For the first time that night...
Real fear appeared in Isabella's eyes.
"What about our agreement?"
"There isn't one anymore."
He slid a folded piece of paper across the table.
One sentence.
SURVIVE IF YOU CAN.
When Isabella looked up again...
The lawyer was already leaving.
Near midnight...
Richard received another encrypted alert.
Someone had just tried to access Marcus's private financial archive.
Not his bank accounts.
Not company records.
His family archive.
Old photographs.
Birth certificates.
Medical files.
Richard blocked the intrusion within seconds.
But one file had already been copied.
He opened the access log.
The stolen file's name appeared.
ADOPTION_RECORD_FINAL.pdf
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
His breathing stopped.
"That's impossible."
Richard turned slowly.
"What?"
Marcus's voice was barely audible.
"I was never adopted."
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he opened the archived document.
The first page appeared.
OFFICIAL ADOPTION RECORD
Child Name:
UNKNOWN MALE
Adoptive Father:
Edward Thorne
Adoptive Mother:
Margaret Thorne
Date of Adoption...
Marcus stepped backward as if someone had struck him.
"No..."
Richard stared at the screen in disbelief.
The document bore government seals.
Court signatures.
Medical certifications.
Everything appeared authentic.
Marcus whispered,
"My parents..."
"...never told me."
Richard wasn't looking at Marcus anymore.
He was looking at the final page.
There...
Attached with an old paperclip...
Was a newborn footprint card.
And beside it...
A handwritten note.
Only seven words.
Do not tell him about Genesis. Ever.
Richard slowly closed the file.
Neither man noticed that, across the corridor, someone had been watching them through the narrow glass window of the security office.
The observer quietly lowered a camera.
Took one final photograph of Marcus.
Then whispered into a concealed microphone:
"Target has seen the adoption file."
A calm voice answered through the earpiece.
May you like
"Then Phase Three begins tonight."
