CHAPTER 14 THE DNA VAULT

The vault door groaned open with a sound that seemed to come from the bones of the building itself.

Steel bolts the size of a man's arm slowly retracted.

Dust poured from the seams.

The computerized voice echoed once more through the underground complex.

GENESIS ARCHIVE UNLOCKED.
AUTHORIZED ACCESS REQUIRED.

Marcus stared into the darkness beyond the doorway.

Rows of cold storage chambers stretched farther than his eyes could see.

Thousands of metal drawers.

Glass containment units.

Stacks of paper records sealed inside fireproof cabinets.

The commander whispered,

"It survived..."

Marcus looked at him.

"What is this place?"

"The last Genesis archive."

"I thought you said Genesis was gone."

"It is."

"This..."

"...is everything they left behind."

Another explosion thundered through the hallway.

The unknown attackers were getting closer.

Phoenix operatives scrambled to form a defensive line.

The commander drew his pistol.

"They must never reach that vault."

Marcus frowned.

"What's inside?"

The commander's eyes remained fixed on the doorway.

"Every bloodline."

Marcus didn't understand.

"What bloodlines?"

The commander pointed toward one of the storage walls.

Marcus stepped inside.

Each drawer bore a name.

Not numbers.

Families.

Dynasties.

Political leaders.

Scientists.

Industrial empires.

Royal houses.

Billionaire families from across the world.

Every drawer contained DNA samples.

Medical histories.

Genealogical records stretching back generations.

Marcus stopped in front of one cabinet.

The label read:

THORNE

He pulled the drawer open.

Inside were dozens of files.

Blood samples.

Old photographs.

Medical charts.

Birth certificates.

Then...

One sealed envelope.

Marked in red.

CHILD REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

Marcus's pulse quickened.

He tore it open.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Original Thorne infant deceased. Replacement approved.

Marcus's hands began shaking.

Replacement.

He slowly looked at the commander.

"I wasn't adopted..."

The commander nodded.

"You were substituted."

Marcus couldn't breathe.

"The real Marcus..."

"...died."

Silence filled the vault.

Edward and Margaret Thorne hadn't adopted an orphan.

They had buried their own son...

And raised another child in his place.

Elsewhere...

Khloe limped through the abandoned maintenance tunnel.

Every step sent pain shooting through her body.

She should have been in intensive care.

Instead...

She followed memories buried for twenty-three years.

She stopped beside a faded wall.

There...

Hidden beneath peeling paint...

A child's handwriting.

Two names.

LUCIAN

KHLOE

Connected by a crooked heart.

Tears welled in her eyes.

"We really were here..."

She pressed her trembling fingers against the wall.

"I remembered you."

Inside the vault...

Richard finally reached Marcus.

Covered in dust.

Breathing hard.

He looked around in disbelief.

"My God..."

Marcus handed him the replacement file.

Richard scanned the first page.

His expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Marcus looked exhausted.

"It says I'm not Marcus."

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he continued reading.

Then frowned.

"This isn't complete."

He flipped to the last page.

Half of it had been torn away.

Someone had deliberately removed the final conclusion.

The commander's face darkened.

"They found it first."

"Who?"

"The Foundation."

Suddenly...

A loud metallic clang echoed through the archive.

Everyone spun around.

The far entrance had been breached.

Smoke rolled across the floor.

Out of the haze stepped six figures dressed in dark gray combat armor.

Unlike Phoenix soldiers...

These operatives wore no helmets.

Their faces were visible.

Cold.

Expressionless.

The woman leading them slowly removed her gloves.

Marcus froze.

He recognized her.

Dr. Emily Carter.

The obstetrician who had delivered his daughter.

Khloe's doctor.

Richard whispered,

"No..."

Emily calmly raised her pistol.

"Step away from the archive."

Marcus stared at her.

"You kidnapped my daughter."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"I delivered her."

"You handed her over."

"I protected her."

Marcus's anger boiled over.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Emily lowered her weapon slightly.

"No."

"I expect you to listen."

The commander immediately aimed his pistol at her.

"Foundation."

Emily smiled.

"Phoenix."

"So we're finally meeting face to face."

The commander answered coldly,

"This ends today."

Emily's smile faded.

"No."

"It ends..."

"...when the child comes home."

At that exact moment...

A tiny cry echoed through the archive.

Everyone froze.

A baby.

Marcus's heart stopped.

The sound came from deeper inside the vault.

Emily slowly looked toward the final containment chamber.

Her expression changed completely.

Confusion.

"No..."

One of her own operatives rushed forward.

"Director..."

"The infant isn't there."

Emily turned sharply.

"What?"

"The chamber is empty."

Silence.

Marcus looked at the commander.

The commander looked at Emily.

Neither side understood.

The baby had vanished.

Again.

Then...

A gentle voice echoed from the darkness beyond the vault.

"You're all too late."

An elderly woman stepped into the light.

White hair.

Elegant black coat.

Calm smile.

She held Marcus's newborn daughter peacefully in her arms.

The baby was sleeping.

Safe.

The woman looked from Emily...

To the Phoenix commander...

Then finally to Marcus.

"I've watched all of you fight over this child."

She smiled sadly.

"And none of you asked what she wants."

Marcus took one cautious step forward.

"Who are you?"

The woman met his eyes.

"My name..."

She paused.

"...is Margaret Thorne."

Marcus felt the world collapse.

Margaret Thorne.

His adoptive mother.

The woman whose funeral he had attended fifteen years earlier.

The woman he believed had died...

Was standing in front of him.

Alive.

May you like

Holding his daughter.
