CHAPTER 1 THE CAMERA NEVER BLINKED

The silence inside the private hospital suite became heavier than the marble beneath everyone's feet.
No one breathed.
No one dared.
Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway as if the world had suddenly forgotten how to move.
His wife...
His pregnant wife...
Curled on the floor, one trembling arm wrapped around her swollen stomach while tiny fragments of crystal glittered around her like frozen stars.
For a split second, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Khloe slowly lifted her head.
Blood trickled from a small cut above her temple, tracing a crimson line down the side of her face.
Her breathing came in painful gasps.
Not because of the wound.
Because every instinct inside her was focused on protecting the child.
"Marcus..."
Her voice barely existed.
Just a whisper.
Yet hearing his name from her lips felt like someone had driven a blade through his chest.
Before Marcus could move, Isabella Rossi burst into tears.
Huge tears.
Perfect tears.
She stumbled backward dramatically until she nearly collapsed against the wall.
"Oh my God..."
"I tried to stop her!"
Elaine Parker looked between the two women, utterly speechless.
"What?"
Isabella clutched her own wrist.
"Khloe attacked me first."
"She accused me of stealing Marcus."
"She completely lost control."
Marcus didn't answer.
His eyes remained locked on Khloe.
She wasn't looking at Isabella.
She wasn't defending herself.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't begging.
She kept one hand over her stomach, almost instinctively counting every movement inside.
Waiting.
Praying.
The baby kicked once.
Relief washed across her face.
Only then did tears finally spill down her cheeks.
Marcus dropped to one knee.
"Khloe..."
She flinched.
Not because she feared him.
Because every movement sent another wave of agony through her ribs.
"I'm here," Marcus whispered.
She stared into his eyes.
For several endless seconds.
There had once been complete trust between them.
Years ago.
Before business.
Before wealth.
Before the cameras.
Before Isabella Rossi had entered their lives.
Now...
She searched his face for one answer.
Do you believe me?
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than every kick Isabella had delivered.
Khloe slowly closed her eyes.
She understood.
He wasn't sure.
Not anymore.
Isabella noticed the hesitation immediately.
A tiny smile almost escaped before she forced another sob.
"Marcus..."
"I swear I only defended myself."
Elaine frowned.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The room didn't look like two women had fought.
It looked like one woman had been hunted.
Broken crystal lay almost entirely around Khloe.
The overturned chair stood several feet behind her.
One expensive heel print stained the front of her white maternity gown.
Elaine's eyes narrowed.
Heel print?
How could someone defending themselves leave a heel mark there?
Before she could speak...
Several doctors rushed inside.
"Move!"
"Emergency!"
The medical team immediately surrounded Khloe.
One nurse checked her pulse.
Another monitored the baby's heartbeat.
The room filled with rapid instructions.
"Blood pressure dropping!"
"Prepare ultrasound!"
"We need the operating room ready now!"
Marcus instinctively reached toward Khloe.
She gently pushed his hand away.
Not angrily.
Not dramatically.
Simply...
Quietly.
The gesture landed harder than any accusation.
Marcus froze.
He realized something terrifying.
His wife no longer felt safe with him.
Not because he hurt her.
Because he hadn't protected her.
The doctors carefully lifted Khloe onto a stretcher.
As they wheeled her toward the hallway, she whispered something so softly almost no one heard it.
Except Marcus.
"If anything happens..."
"Save our daughter."
Not me.
Our daughter.
Marcus watched the stretcher disappear down the corridor.
Then...
Everything inside him snapped.
He slowly turned toward Isabella.
For the first time that evening...
She felt genuine fear.
His face contained no rage.
No shouting.
No threats.
Only absolute silence.
Sometimes...
Silence is far more dangerous.
"Marcus..."
She reached for his arm.
He stepped away.
One step.
Nothing more.
Yet that single movement shattered months of careful manipulation.
"You don't believe me?" she whispered.
Marcus looked at the shattered crystal.
Then at the overturned furniture.
Then at the blood.
Finally...
His eyes drifted upward.
Toward the small black dome mounted above the entrance.
The security camera.
His expression changed.
Almost imperceptibly.
Elaine followed his gaze.
Then her eyes widened.
"Oh..."
Isabella's breathing stopped.
Camera.
There had been a camera.
No.
Impossible.
She had inspected the suite herself during the charity event.
She remembered seeing decorative lighting.
Fresh flowers.
Luxury artwork.
She had never noticed...
The camera.
Panic finally reached her eyes.
Marcus said only four words.
"Nobody leaves this floor."
Elaine immediately pulled out her phone.
"I'll call hospital security."
"No."
Marcus stopped her.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
"Call Richard Lawson."
Elaine blinked.
"The head of security?"
Marcus nodded once.
Richard Lawson wasn't merely hospital security.
He had spent twenty years leading investigations for federal financial crimes before retiring.
Marcus trusted him with secrets worth billions.
If Richard came...
Nothing would disappear.
Nothing would be altered.
Nothing would escape unnoticed.
Isabella felt sweat forming beneath her perfectly styled hair.
Think.
Think.
Think.
She could still fix this.
The recording.
Delete it.
Corrupt it.
Buy someone.
There was always someone willing to sell loyalty.
Always.
Then...
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway.
A tall man with silver hair entered, flanked by six security officers.
Everyone immediately stepped aside.
Dr. Adrian Bennett.
Chairman of the hospital board.
Owner of nearly thirty percent of the medical network.
And...
Khloe's uncle.
He looked at the blood on the floor.
Then at Isabella.
Then toward the hallway where his niece had disappeared.
His face became frighteningly still.
"Seal the building."
Every officer moved instantly.
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
Isabella forced another frightened expression.
"This is ridiculous!"
"I've done nothing wrong!"
Dr. Bennett ignored her.
Instead he looked directly at Richard Lawson, who had just arrived carrying a secure laptop.
"I want every recording."
"Every angle."
"No edits."
"No interruptions."
Richard nodded.
"Already downloading."
The room became silent again.
The laptop connected directly to the hospital's encrypted security system.
A loading bar appeared.
3%.
11%.
19%.
Isabella's heartbeat thundered inside her ears.
Come on...
Corrupt.
Freeze.
Fail.
Anything.
Instead...
The progress bar reached one hundred percent.
Richard clicked the first file.
The video appeared.
Everyone gathered around.
Marcus stood closest to the screen.
Dr. Bennett folded his arms.
Elaine held her breath.
Isabella quietly stepped backward.
The recording began.
There was no audio for the first few seconds.
Only video.
Khloe entering the suite.
Alone.
Exactly as she had remembered.
Then Isabella appeared.
Calm.
Elegant.
Smiling.
Marcus watched without blinking.
The footage continued.
Isabella spoke.
Khloe answered.
Suddenly...
Richard paused the recording.
His forehead creased.
"That's strange."
"What?"
Richard zoomed into the timestamp.
The room leaned closer.
The video clock skipped.
Not by one second.
Not by five.
Exactly...
Thirty-seven seconds.
Richard looked at Marcus.
"This file has been altered."
The room exploded into confusion.
Dr. Bennett slammed his hand against the table.
"That's impossible!"
Richard's face darkened.
"No."
"It's worse than impossible."
He slowly looked around the suite.
Someone...
Had accessed the hospital's highest-security surveillance server.
Only minutes after the attack.
Meaning only someone with executive-level authorization could have removed those missing thirty-seven seconds.
Richard closed the laptop.
Then spoke the sentence that froze everyone in place.
"The person who erased this footage..."
May you like
"...is still inside this hospital."
