CHAPTER 4 THE CHIP WAS NEVER HERS

Rain lashed against the hospital's towering windows as Marcus stood outside the intensive care unit, unable to tear his eyes away from the closed doors.
Khloe was alive.
Their daughter was alive.
That should have brought relief.
Instead, the knot in his chest only tightened.
The attack no longer looked like the act of a jealous woman.
It looked... orchestrated.
Richard Lawson approached, carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was the tiny microchip the surgeons had removed.
Marcus frowned.
"What is it?"
"I don't know yet."
Richard held it beneath the hallway lights.
"It's not a medical implant."
"No serial number."
"No manufacturer."
"No hospital markings."
"It was designed to be hidden."
Dr. Adrian Bennett joined them.
"Can it be tracked?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"If it's still transmitting."
He connected the chip to a portable forensic scanner.
The screen flickered.
A single green light blinked.
Active.
Richard's expression changed.
"It's still sending a signal."
Marcus stared at him.
"To whom?"
Richard typed rapidly.
The scanner searched for a destination.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Twenty.
Then...
The connection appeared.
Everyone expected to see an offshore server.
A private satellite.
Some encrypted military network.
Instead...
The destination made Richard stop typing.
He looked up in disbelief.
"It's communicating..."
"...with another device inside this hospital."
Silence swallowed the hallway.
Marcus spoke first.
"Find it."
Richard activated the signal tracker.
A digital map of the hospital appeared.
One green dot represented the chip.
A second blinking dot represented its receiver.
The distance between them...
Less than thirty meters.
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"Someone is here."
On the other side of the ICU wall...
A woman wearing blue scrubs quietly adjusted an IV bag beside another patient.
She looked like every other nurse on the floor.
Calm.
Professional.
Invisible.
Her name badge read:
LISA MORGAN.
She glanced casually toward the hallway.
Marcus.
Richard.
Dr. Bennett.
All distracted by the scanner.
Slowly...
She reached beneath the patient's mattress.
A slim black phone vibrated once.
The screen displayed one sentence.
SIGNAL DETECTED.
Lisa's eyes widened.
Impossible.
The implant had been discovered.
Without hesitation, she removed the phone's battery, snapped the SIM card in half, and slipped both pieces into separate medical waste containers.
Then she walked calmly toward the staff exit.
Not hurried.
Not nervous.
Exactly as she'd been trained.
Richard watched the second signal begin to move.
"It's leaving."
Marcus didn't wait.
"There!"
The blinking dot crossed the nurses' station.
Headed toward the emergency stairwell.
Marcus broke into a sprint.
Security officers followed.
Doctors stepped aside as the billionaire stormed through the corridor.
He reached the stairwell door just as it slammed shut.
Marcus pushed it open.
Empty.
Only the echo of footsteps descending.
He ran downward two flights at a time.
Third floor.
Second floor.
Ground level.
Nothing.
Richard's voice crackled through his earpiece.
"The signal just disappeared."
Marcus stopped.
"How?"
"It went offline."
He punched the concrete wall hard enough to split the skin across his knuckles.
"Damn it!"
Meanwhile...
Lisa Morgan calmly exited through the employee parking garage.
She reached an old gray sedan.
Opened the driver's door.
Then paused.
Someone was standing behind her.
"You made a mistake."
Lisa turned sharply.
The man wore a charcoal overcoat.
Black leather gloves.
His face was hidden beneath an umbrella.
"I destroyed the receiver."
The man tilted his head slightly.
"But not before they traced it."
Lisa swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
The man extended one gloved hand.
"Give me your badge."
She hesitated.
Then handed it over.
He snapped it cleanly in half.
"From this moment..."
"...Lisa Morgan no longer exists."
He stepped closer.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"If they capture you..."
"...everything dies."
Lisa nodded silently.
She climbed into the sedan.
The engine started.
She drove away without looking back.
The man watched until the taillights vanished into the rain.
Then he removed a small encrypted phone from his pocket.
Only four words appeared on the screen.
PROTOCOL TWO IS ACTIVE.
He pressed "Confirm."
Back upstairs...
Richard continued examining the microchip.
Something still bothered him.
He magnified its circuitry.
Then froze.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What now?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he carefully rotated the chip beneath the light.
Tiny engraved lettering became visible.
So small it was invisible to the naked eye.
Richard whispered the words aloud.
"Property..."
"...of Project Genesis."
Dr. Bennett frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Richard had.
Years ago.
Back when he worked federal investigations.
Project Genesis.
An ultra-classified research initiative that officially never existed.
Billions of dollars had disappeared into it.
Politicians denied its existence.
Corporations erased every record.
Witnesses vanished.
Richard had spent two years chasing the case.
Then one morning...
Every file on his desk disappeared.
His investigation was shut down.
He was forced into early retirement.
He looked at Marcus.
"If this chip belongs to Genesis..."
"...then your wife became involved in something far bigger than your family."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"She never told me anything."
Richard looked directly into his eyes.
"Maybe..."
"...because she couldn't."
Hours later...
Khloe finally regained consciousness.
The room was dim.
Machines beeped softly.
She felt exhausted.
Weak.
But alive.
A nurse smiled.
"Welcome back."
Khloe's first words were barely audible.
"My daughter?"
"She's stable."
Relief flooded her face.
Then she turned toward the doorway.
"Marcus?"
The nurse hesitated.
"He's outside."
Khloe closed her eyes.
"Don't let him in."
The nurse looked surprised.
"Mrs. Thorne..."
"Please."
Her voice trembled.
"Not yet."
Outside the room...
Marcus heard every word.
He didn't move.
He simply stood there.
Staring at the floor.
For the first time since the attack...
He wondered whether the greatest danger threatening his family wasn't Isabella...
Or the missing security footage...
Or the mysterious microchip...
But the possibility that the woman he loved had been carrying a secret long before anyone walked into that hospital suite.
Just then...
Richard's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
No greeting came.
Only a distorted voice.
"You found the chip."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Who is this?"
"You have exactly twelve hours."
"Twelve hours for what?"
The voice ignored the question.
"If Marcus Thorne learns the truth about Project Genesis..."
"...his wife won't be the first member of his family to die."
The line went dead.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
Marcus stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Richard looked him straight in the eye.
Then spoke the sentence that changed everything.
"Marcus..."
May you like
"I think your father didn't die in a car accident."
