Chapter 4: The Man in the Darkness

The underground lights flickered to life one corridor at a time.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Each bulb illuminated another stretch of tunnel until the darkness retreated far enough to reveal just how enormous the network truly was.
No one spoke.
Officer Mills slowly turned in a full circle.
"My God..."
The passages stretched outward like the spokes of a wheel, disappearing beneath neighboring properties, the woods beyond our backyard, and somewhere even farther.
Officer Ramirez tightened his grip on his pistol.
"This wasn't built by one person."
"No," another officer replied quietly.
"It took decades."
The humming of the generator continued somewhere in the distance.
Then...
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming from one of the newly lit corridors.
Every officer immediately raised their weapons.
"Police!"
Ramirez shouted.
"Come out with your hands where we can see them!"
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then they began again.
Closer.
Closer.
A tall figure emerged from the far end of the tunnel.
The man looked to be in his late sixties.
His gray beard reached nearly to his chest.
His clothes were stained with dirt and grease, and one sleeve was torn, exposing an old scar running the length of his forearm.
Most striking were his eyes.
They weren't frightened.
They looked... exhausted.
He slowly raised both hands.
"I've been waiting."
Officer Mills barked,
"On the ground!"
The old man obeyed without resistance.
He knelt, keeping his hands visible.
Ramirez approached cautiously.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Samuel Harper."
His voice was rough, as though he hadn't spoken to another adult in years.
"I know why you're here."
Ramirez frowned.
"You know these children?"
Samuel looked toward Lily.
His expression softened.
"I tried to keep her alive."
Every officer exchanged uneasy glances.
I instinctively pulled Lily closer.
"What are you talking about?"
Samuel looked at me with genuine sorrow.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"I'm sorry I couldn't get her out sooner."
My heartbeat quickened.
"You know my name?"
"I knew your husband."
The tunnel seemed to shrink around me.
"You knew Daniel?"
Samuel nodded slowly.
"He found this place six days before he died."
No one moved.
Ramirez's voice became sharper.
"Start explaining."
Samuel closed his eyes for a moment.
"Thirty-four years ago, this property belonged to a wealthy developer named Arthur Bell."
"He built these tunnels."
"Officially, they were emergency shelters."
"In reality..."
"They were hidden."
He glanced toward the rows of abandoned rooms.
"They became places where people disappeared."
A chill swept through everyone.
Samuel continued.
"Arthur Bell was arrested before anyone discovered the entire network."
"He died in prison."
"But not everyone who worked for him disappeared."
"You mean accomplices?" Ramirez asked.
Samuel nodded.
"They scattered."
"Some changed their names."
"Some started new lives."
"They waited."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that have to do with Claire?"
Samuel looked at me carefully.
"Everything."
Before he could continue, Lily suddenly tugged on my sleeve.
"Mom..."
I knelt beside her.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
She pointed toward Samuel.
"He isn't bad."
Everyone looked at her.
"He brought us food."
Samuel lowered his eyes.
"I couldn't stay long."
"If they saw me..."
"They would've killed all of us."
Officer Mills frowned.
"'They?'"
Samuel answered without hesitation.
"There are more."
Those three words echoed through the tunnels.
More.
Not just Claire.
Officer Ramirez immediately radioed upstairs.
"We need backup."
"Seal every entrance."
"No one leaves the property."
Static answered.
Then...
Nothing.
He tried again.
No response.
"The signal's blocked."
Samuel nodded.
"They installed jammers years ago."
Ramirez stared at him.
"You know an awful lot."
"I've been hiding down here for nineteen years."
The officers looked stunned.
"Nineteen?"
Samuel gave a weary smile.
"I used to work maintenance."
"I helped repair these tunnels."
"When I realized what they were being used for..."
"I tried to expose them."
"What happened?"
"They framed me."
"Murder."
"I escaped before trial."
"So you've lived underground ever since?"
"I stayed because children kept disappearing."
His voice cracked.
"I couldn't save most of them."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Then Samuel looked directly at Lily.
"But I saved this one."
I studied his face.
There was no triumph in his expression.
Only regret.
"Tell me exactly what happened."
Samuel nodded.
"The night Lily disappeared..."
He looked toward the ceiling, as though replaying the memory.
"Your husband followed Claire."
"He already suspected her."
"He saw her bring Lily through the hidden hatch."
I felt my knees weaken.
"Daniel found the entrance?"
"Yes."
"He almost reached them."
"What stopped him?"
Samuel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his coat pocket.
The officers instantly aimed their weapons.
"Easy."
He slowly removed a small leather wallet.
Inside was a damaged memory card.
"I found this beside his body."
I stared at it.
Daniel always carried a dashboard camera in his SUV.
Ramirez carefully accepted the card.
"You haven't watched it?"
Samuel shook his head.
"I didn't have the equipment."
"But I knew someday..."
"...someone would."
Before Ramirez could reply...
Grace, the unconscious little girl lying on the stretcher, suddenly gasped.
A medic who had just arrived through the tunnel checked her pulse.
"She's waking up."
Everyone crowded closer.
Grace's eyelids fluttered.
She stared blankly at the ceiling.
Then panic flooded her face.
"No!"
She tried to sit upright.
"They'll hear us!"
The medic gently held her shoulders.
"You're safe."
"No..."
Grace whispered frantically.
"They always come back."
My heart sank.
"Who comes back?"
The little girl looked around the room.
Her eyes stopped on Claire's abandoned jacket lying on the floor.
She screamed.
"HER!"
The sound echoed through every tunnel.
Then Grace burst into uncontrollable sobs.
"She smiles first..."
"...then she lies."
Every officer turned toward Ramirez.
He didn't say a word.
He didn't need to.
The investigation had changed completely.
This was no longer a missing-child case.
It had become something far darker.
Just then, one of the officers monitoring the side corridor called out.
"Sir!"
Ramirez hurried over.
"What is it?"
The officer pointed at the dusty floor.
Fresh footprints.
Dozens of them.
Not old.
Not days old.
Minutes old.
Someone had passed through the corridor while everyone was focused on Lily.
Ramirez's face hardened.
"They're still here."
A distant metal door slammed somewhere deep within the maze.
Then another.
Then another.
The echoes rolled through the underground passages like dominoes falling.
Samuel's eyes widened.
"They're sealing sections."
Ramirez looked at him.
"Can they escape?"
Samuel answered with one terrifying sentence.
"They already know we're coming."
At that exact moment, every light in the tunnel went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the underground maze.
Then, from somewhere deep ahead...
A woman's voice echoed through the blackness.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost cheerful.
"You should have left the garden alone, Emma."
Claire.
May you like
And she wasn't alone.
