Chapter 13: The Child in the Elevator

The elevator doors stopped inches before closing.

The small hand slowly withdrew into the shadows.

No one had entered.

No one stood inside.

Yet the Door Open button still glowed.

Officer Mills swallowed hard.

"...Did everyone see that?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had.

Even Jonathan Vale had taken an involuntary step backward.

For the first time since meeting him, certainty had disappeared from his face.

Officer Ramirez carefully approached the elevator.

Gun raised.

"Police!"

"If someone is inside, step forward."

Silence.

He swept his flashlight across the polished steel walls.

Nothing.

No hidden compartment.

No ceiling hatch.

No one.

The elevator was completely empty.

Then...

A tiny footprint appeared on the floor.

Not muddy.

Not bloody.

Simply...

Wet.

Another footprint appeared beside it.

Then another.

A trail of small footprints slowly formed across the steel floor...

As though an invisible child had just walked inside.

Grace's breathing became uneven.

"I know those."

Lily looked at her.

"You do?"

Grace nodded.

"They always came before..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Dr. Mercer quietly did it for her.

"...before another child disappeared."

Officer Ramirez refused to be distracted.

He pressed the Hold Door button.

The control panel lit up.

Only three floors existed.

B

The level they were standing on.

C

The level mentioned in the letter.

And...

Ø

No number.

Just the black circle.

Officer Mills frowned.

"There's no basement marked with a symbol."

Jonathan slowly closed his eyes.

"There wasn't supposed to be."

Ramirez turned.

"What is it?"

Jonathan answered honestly.

"I've never seen that button before."

Samuel stepped toward the elevator.

His expression changed.

"The walls."

Everyone looked.

Tiny scratches covered the polished steel.

Someone had carved words into the surface.

Thousands of them.

Layer upon layer.

Barely visible unless light struck at exactly the right angle.

Officer Mills shined his flashlight sideways.

The writing became readable.

Names.

Children's names.

Dates.

Simple messages.

MOM CAME.

DON'T GO DOWN.

IT LIES.

One message had been carved much deeper than the others.

DON'T PRESS Ø

Silence settled over the room.

Jonathan stared at the symbol.

"I was told..."

He stopped.

"What?"

Ramirez demanded.

Jonathan hesitated for the first time.

"I was told the Circle wasn't a place."

Samuel nodded.

"So was I."

Jonathan slowly pointed toward the control panel.

"I think we were wrong."

Suddenly...

The elevator speakers crackled.

Not the distorted voice from before.

A child.

Soft.

Almost whispering.

"Mom..."

Every muscle in my body locked.

It sounded exactly like Lily.

Lily looked confused.

"That wasn't me."

The voice came again.

Closer.

"Mom..."

This time...

It sounded like another little girl.

Officer Mills quickly checked the hallway.

No one.

The speaker continued.

"Please..."

"...come home."

Grace covered her ears.

"No!"

"I hate this room!"

Dr. Mercer immediately knelt beside her.

"It's recorded."

"It's trying to frighten you."

Grace shook her head violently.

"No."

"It changes."

The voice inside the elevator suddenly changed again.

Now...

It sounded like Daniel.

My husband's voice.

Perfectly.

"Emma..."

I froze.

Every instinct inside me screamed to step forward.

"Emma..."

"I'm here."

Tears filled my eyes.

It wasn't possible.

Daniel was dead.

Yet every word...

Every pause...

Every breath...

Matched his voice exactly.

Jonathan whispered,

"They built a mimic system."

Officer Mills frowned.

"What?"

"They recorded voices."

"They learned patterns."

"They could imitate anyone."

Lily grabbed my hand.

"Mom."

"It's fake."

I looked at her.

She stared directly into the empty elevator.

"Dad would never tell you to come alone."

My heart broke all over again.

She was right.

Officer Ramirez made his decision.

"No one enters alone."

He looked toward Mills.

"Search the shaft."

The detective nodded.

He examined the ceiling hatch.

"No cables exposed."

"No maintenance ladder."

Samuel interrupted.

"There doesn't have to be."

He walked to the back wall.

Placed one hand against the steel.

Then knocked three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

A hollow echo answered.

His face changed.

"The shaft..."

"...isn't behind the elevator."

"What?"

He pointed sideways.

"The cabin moves."

"The walls do too."

"This entire thing is built inside a rotating chamber."

Officer Mills stared.

"That's impossible."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"It's brilliant."

Jonathan suddenly laughed.

Quietly.

Not mockingly.

With admiration.

"I underestimated them."

Ramirez looked at him.

"You helped build this place."

Jonathan nodded.

"I thought I understood it."

"I didn't."

He looked toward the black circle button.

"They've spent decades hiding things..."

"...from people like me."

Then...

The elevator chimed.

A pleasant mechanical voice spoke.

"Destination confirmed."

Nobody had touched the controls.

The display changed by itself.

Instead of B...

It now showed:

Ø

Officer Mills lunged toward the panel.

He repeatedly pressed B.

Nothing happened.

Ramirez forced the doors apart with his hands.

The motors ignored him.

The doors slowly began closing.

Samuel shouted,

"Get back!"

Everyone stepped away.

The doors sealed shut.

The elevator began descending.

Not quickly.

Smoothly.

Silently.

The floor indicator changed.

B

Then...

Instead of C...

The display skipped directly to a symbol none of them had seen before.

A simple sentence appeared across the digital screen.

WELCOME HOME

The elevator continued downward.

Deeper than Level C.

Deeper than any blueprint Samuel had ever found.

Then...

The building trembled.

Not from an explosion.

From something moving far below.

A massive mechanism awakening after decades of silence.

Officer Mills checked the shaft depth on his scanner.

His face drained of color.

"Sir..."

Ramirez looked over.

"What?"

"The elevator..."

"...didn't stop."

"How deep?"

Mills stared at the numbers.

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"It's already..."

"...two hundred feet below us."

May you like

And it was still descending.
