Chapter 11: The Phone That Shouldn't Exist

The ringing echoed up through the spiral staircase.
One sharp tone.
Then another.
Then another.
It wasn't the muffled sound of an old landline.
It was unmistakably a modern cellphone.
Somewhere beneath the library.
Everyone instinctively looked toward the opening in the floor.
Jonathan Vale smiled almost imperceptibly.
"Right on time."
Officer Ramirez's voice hardened.
"Who is calling?"
Jonathan shrugged.
"I imagine they're wondering why I haven't checked in."
Ramirez motioned to two officers.
"Take him into custody."
Steel handcuffs clicked around Jonathan's wrists.
He offered no resistance.
Instead, he calmly watched the staircase.
"You're running out of time."
Samuel frowned.
"For what?"
Jonathan looked at him.
"They've already begun the succession."
The phone continued ringing.
Officer Mills stepped cautiously onto the spiral staircase.
"I'll check."
Ramirez nodded.
"Carefully."
The detective descended first, flashlight cutting through the darkness.
Two officers followed behind him.
The ringing grew louder.
Clearer.
Finally...
"It stopped!" Mills shouted from below.
A few seconds later his voice echoed again.
"Sir... you need to see this."
Ramirez looked at me.
"You stay here."
I shook my head.
"I'm coming."
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Stay behind us."
Together we descended into the newly discovered level.
Unlike every tunnel above...
This place looked immaculate.
White walls.
Polished concrete floors.
LED ceiling lights.
Climate-controlled air.
It felt less like an underground bunker...
And more like a private research facility.
Every door bore a number instead of a name.
B-101
B-102
B-103
Officer Mills stood outside one open room.
His face had turned pale.
Without speaking, he pointed inside.
The room looked like an office.
Simple desk.
Bookshelves.
Coffee still steaming gently from a ceramic mug.
Someone had been here only minutes earlier.
At the center of the desk...
A smartphone.
Its screen still glowing.
The missed call notification read:
Incoming Call
Claire
Silence.
Officer Ramirez slowly picked up the phone.
He looked toward Jonathan.
"You told us Claire was dead."
Jonathan nodded.
"I told you the real Claire was."
Ramirez unlocked the screen using the fingerprint Jonathan willingly provided.
No password appeared.
The home screen opened immediately.
One unread message waited.
Mission failed.
Proceed to Protocol Ash.
Time sent:
Thirty seconds ago.
Officer Mills whispered,
"They know."
Samuel walked toward the bookshelf.
Something caught his attention.
Family photographs.
Dozens of them.
Different families.
Different years.
Children smiling beside parents.
Birthday parties.
School graduations.
Normal lives.
Until Samuel noticed something horrifying.
The same woman appeared in nearly every photograph.
Different hairstyles.
Different names written on the frames.
But always the same face.
Claire.
Or whoever everyone believed was Claire.
Samuel slowly removed one frame.
Date:
1999
Another.
2008
Another.
2017
She hadn't aged.
Dr. Mercer closed her eyes.
"They replaced her."
"What?" Ramirez asked.
Jonathan answered calmly.
"Every recruiter eventually receives a successor."
"They inherit the identity."
Officer Mills stared.
"So..."
"There wasn't one Claire."
Jonathan nodded.
"There were many."
"The title survived."
"The person did not."
Lily quietly tugged my sleeve.
"Mom."
I knelt beside her.
"What is it?"
She pointed toward a closed cabinet.
"That's where she kept the music."
I frowned.
"The music?"
"The one that helped children forget."
Grace immediately looked terrified.
"No..."
"Don't open it."
Ramirez carefully approached the cabinet.
Inside...
Hundreds of audio players.
Headphones.
Memory cards.
Officer Mills picked one up.
A handwritten label read:
Night Cycle 4
Another:
Attachment Reduction
Another:
Identity Transition
Dr. Mercer whispered,
"They used repetition."
Samuel nodded slowly.
"They weren't erasing memories..."
"They were replacing them."
Officer Ramirez opened the next drawer.
Medical files.
Every child had undergone psychological evaluations.
IQ scores.
Personality tests.
Sleep reports.
One folder sat separately from the others.
LILY CARTER
My breathing stopped.
Ramirez handed it to me.
Inside...
Only three pages.
The first described Lily's health.
The second described her family.
The third...
Contained one handwritten sentence.
Subject unsuitable.
Below it...
Another line.
Emotional bond with mother exceeds projection model.
Tears filled my eyes.
Even their own reports admitted they couldn't break the love between us.
Jonathan quietly smiled.
"I argued to keep her alive."
I looked at him in disbelief.
"You expect gratitude?"
"No."
"I expect accuracy."
Suddenly...
Officer Mills called out again.
"Sir!"
He had discovered another room.
Unlike the offices...
This room contained servers.
Rows and rows of humming computers.
Small green lights blinked across dozens of machines.
Samuel stared.
"So that's where everything went."
Ramirez looked confused.
"What?"
"The backups."
"They didn't destroy the evidence."
"They moved it."
Officer Mills examined one monitor.
Thousands of files.
Videos.
Financial records.
Identity documents.
Decades of evidence.
Enough to expose an entire organization.
Ramirez immediately radioed headquarters.
"This is Detective Ramirez."
"I have recovered a digital archive."
This time...
The response came instantly.
"Signal received."
The jammer was gone.
Ramirez exhaled in relief.
"Send every cybercrime unit available."
"We need secure transport."
The dispatcher answered,
"Units are already en route."
Jonathan quietly laughed.
Everyone turned toward him.
"What?"
Ramirez demanded.
Jonathan looked almost sympathetic.
"You still think this room is the archive."
Samuel slowly looked around.
Then his face changed.
"No..."
Officer Mills frowned.
"What?"
Samuel pointed toward the blinking server lights.
"They're uploading."
The monitor displayed a progress bar none of them had noticed.
Remote Synchronization
97% Complete
Officer Ramirez rushed to the keyboard.
"Can you stop it?"
Officer Mills typed frantically.
"No."
"It's encrypted."
The percentage climbed.
98%.
99%.
Jonathan calmly spoke.
"The Circle never keeps its history in one place."
The progress bar reached...
100%
Every server screen immediately went black.
One line of text appeared simultaneously across hundreds of monitors.
TRANSFER COMPLETE
Then...
Smoke began rising from inside the server racks.
Officer Mills shouted,
"They're overheating!"
Samuel grabbed Lily and Grace.
"Everyone back!"
One after another...
The hard drives exploded in showers of sparks.
Not large explosions.
Controlled ones.
Every storage unit destroyed itself from within.
Within thirty seconds...
Years of digital evidence had turned into melted metal.
Silence filled the room.
Officer Ramirez stared at the smoking ruins.
Jonathan looked at him almost kindly.
"You've saved the children."
"But the Circle..."
He slowly lifted his cuffed hands.
"...is already somewhere else."
At that exact moment, a secure line rang on the smartphone again.
This time the caller ID didn't display a name.
Only a symbol.
May you like
A perfectly black circle.
