Chapter 2: The Recording She Couldn't Erase

The garden fell silent.

Even the rain seemed to hold its breath.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Claire stood ten feet away, her face perfectly composed, but I noticed the tiny tremor in her left hand.

She always had one tell.

When she lied, her fingers shook.

Officer Ramirez looked between us.

"What recording?"

I didn't answer.

Instead, I pressed Play.

For several seconds, only static filled the phone's speaker.

Wind.

Rain.

Leaves scraping across stone.

Claire exhaled quietly.

She almost smiled.

Then...

A child's laughter drifted through the recording.

Lily.

I would recognize that laugh anywhere.

My knees nearly gave out.

The timestamp flashed across the screen.

8:47 PM.

The night before she disappeared.

The camera pointed toward the garden.

The fountain stood exactly where it did now, surrounded by flowers Daniel had planted every spring.

The image itself looked ordinary.

Lily chased fireflies while Liam followed behind carrying a flashlight almost bigger than he was.

Daniel stepped into frame.

He laughed as Lily tried to catch a glowing insect inside both hands.

"You'll never catch them if you run that fast," he teased.

Lily giggled.

"I'm practicing."

"For what?"

"So when I'm a detective."

Daniel laughed louder.

"What mystery are you solving?"

Lily pointed toward the fountain.

"The whisper."

Daniel stopped smiling.

"What whisper?"

"The one under the ground."

Claire suddenly interrupted.

"Turn it off."

Nobody moved.

Officer Ramirez frowned.

"Quiet."

The recording continued.

Daniel crouched beside Lily.

"What do you mean?"

She glanced toward the fountain.

"Asking questions."

"What questions?"

"I don't know."

"It's too quiet."

Daniel looked puzzled.

He pressed one ear against the ground exactly where Liam had today.

Several seconds passed.

Then...

He stood up slowly.

His smile had disappeared.

Emma.

He looked directly toward the house.

"Emma!"

The recording caught my voice faintly from inside.

"What?"

"Come here a second!"

The audio crackled.

Footsteps.

Then another voice.

Claire.

She walked into frame carrying lemonade.

"Oh, everyone's out here."

Daniel pointed toward the fountain.

"Listen."

Claire hesitated.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then she laughed.

"Seriously?"

"Humor me."

She knelt.

Placed one ear against the mud.

Less than two seconds later she stood up.

"I don't hear anything."

But the camera captured something else.

While standing...

Claire glanced behind herself.

Toward the old storage shed.

Only for an instant.

Daniel noticed.

"So you heard it too."

Claire forced another laugh.

"You're imagining things."

Daniel didn't look convinced.

The recording ended.

Silence settled over the garden.

Officer Ramirez slowly lowered his notebook.

"You said your husband heard something."

I nodded.

"He never told me."

Claire folded her arms.

"This proves nothing."

"Children tell stories."

Officer Ramirez looked back at the phone.

"It proves Mr. Carter was concerned."

Claire's voice sharpened.

"He was grieving."

"No."

I whispered.

"He wasn't grieving."

Everyone looked at me.

"He recorded this the night before he died."

The sentence struck harder than thunder.

Daniel hadn't died after Lily vanished.

He died first.

A sudden single-car accident on a mountain road.

Police ruled it an unfortunate tragedy.

No witnesses.

No mechanical defects.

Just wet pavement.

Case closed.

At least...

That's what Claire kept repeating.

Officer Ramirez stared at me.

"You never mentioned your husband was investigating something."

"I didn't know."

My voice cracked.

"I never saw this recording."

Claire stepped forward.

"Emma."

"Please."

"You're connecting unrelated events."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Am I?"

She hesitated.

Then smiled again.

The same perfect smile she'd worn at Daniel's funeral.

"You're exhausted."

There it was.

Again.

The phrase.

The script.

Officer Ramirez finally noticed.

"You've said that several times."

Claire shrugged.

"Because it's true."

"No."

I answered quietly.

"You need me exhausted."

Her smile faltered.

"Because tired people question themselves."

Officer Ramirez slowly turned toward Claire.

"What exactly are you implying?"

"I'm implying..."

I opened another file.

"...that Daniel kept investigating."

Claire's face lost all color.

"Don't."

I pressed Play.

This recording wasn't from the garden.

It came from Daniel's office.

The camera overlooked his desk.

The timestamp read:

11:58 PM.

Daniel sat alone.

His laptop open.

Stacks of property maps covered the desk.

He spoke directly into a small recorder.

"If anything happens to me..."

My heart stopped.

"...this isn't an accident."

Officer Ramirez inhaled sharply.

Daniel continued.

"The old blueprint doesn't match the current property."

He unfolded yellowed construction drawings.

"There was originally a storm shelter beneath the fountain."

Claire stumbled backward.

"No..."

Daniel circled something with a red marker.

"The entrance should have been sealed thirty-two years ago."

He rubbed his forehead.

"But someone opened it recently."

The recording ended abruptly.

The room stood frozen.

Officer Ramirez looked at me.

"Storm shelter?"

"I've lived here nine years."

"I never knew."

Claire suddenly laughed.

A desperate laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

"Old houses have forgotten basements."

"That doesn't mean Lily is underground."

Then...

Knock.

Every head turned.

The sound came again.

Clearer than before.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

This time Officer Ramirez heard it too.

His eyes widened.

"What..."

Nobody answered.

Another officer walked through the gate.

"Sir."

"We checked around the property."

"No pipes."

"No construction."

"No nearby road work."

The knocking came again.

Slower.

Weaker.

But unmistakable.

Officer Ramirez spoke into his radio.

"I need excavation equipment."

Claire exploded.

"You can't destroy private property based on a noise!"

He looked at her calmly.

"We've searched this house for forty-eight hours."

"If there's any chance a child is alive..."

"We dig."

Claire grabbed his arm.

"This is insane."

He pulled away.

"No."

"If there's even a one-percent chance..."

"I won't ignore it."

Claire's breathing quickened.

For the first time since Daniel's funeral...

She looked terrified.

Not worried.

Terrified.

She turned toward me.

"Emma."

"Please."

Her voice softened.

"We're sisters."

"You trust me."

I stared at her.

Memories flooded back.

Claire comforting me after Daniel died.

Claire insisting I take sleeping pills.

Claire answering every phone call.

Claire telling neighbors I wasn't mentally stable.

Claire refusing to let me speak to detectives alone.

Claire...

Always beside me.

Always guiding every conversation.

Always controlling the story.

A terrible realization settled over me.

She hadn't been helping.

She'd been managing me.

Officer Ramirez interrupted.

"When was the last time anyone saw Lily besides family?"

Claire answered instantly.

"Thursday."

I spoke over her.

"Friday morning."

Both answers echoed together.

Ramirez frowned.

Claire looked at me.

I slowly smiled.

Very faintly.

"You answered too quickly."

She swallowed.

"I..."

"You didn't even think."

Officer Ramirez looked from Claire to me.

"Mrs. Carter..."

I continued.

"You've answered every question before anyone else."

"Since Daniel died."

"You always knew."

"Knew what Lily said."

"Knew what Daniel believed."

"Knew exactly where the police searched."

Claire backed away another step.

"I was helping."

"No."

I whispered.

"You were directing."

The radio crackled.

"Excavator arriving in six minutes."

Claire suddenly turned.

And ran.

Straight across the backyard.

Toward the old storage shed.

Officer Ramirez shouted,

"Stop her!"

Two officers sprinted after her.

Claire slammed the shed door shut from inside.

A loud metallic crash echoed through the garden.

Then another.

Officer Ramirez reached the door.

"Claire!"

No response.

The officers forced it open.

Inside...

The shed was empty.

Impossible.

Only one tiny window overlooked the garden.

Too small for anyone to escape.

Officer Ramirez searched every corner.

Nothing.

Then one officer called out.

"Sir..."

He pointed at the floor.

A heavy metal hatch sat hidden beneath old gardening tools.

Fresh mud covered its edges.

Someone had opened it recently.

Officer Ramirez slowly lifted the handle.

Cold air rushed upward from the darkness below.

Then...

A faint voice drifted out of the tunnel.

Almost too weak to hear.

"...Mom?"

My entire world stopped.

"Lily?"

Silence.

Then again.

"...Mom..."

Officer Ramirez grabbed his flashlight.

"She's alive."

The words echoed through the storm.

But before anyone could climb down...

A deafening explosion erupted somewhere deep beneath the tunnel.

The ground shook violently.

Dust burst from the opening.

The lights inside the house flickered.

And from somewhere below...

May you like

Claire screamed.
