Chapter 12: The Black Circle

The phone vibrated across the desk.
Not loudly.
Just enough to make every eye in the room lock onto the glowing screen.
A single symbol filled the display.
A perfectly black circle.
No number.
No name.
Only the emblem that had appeared throughout the ledger.
No one reached for it.
For three long seconds, the only sound was the soft hum of the air-conditioning.
Jonathan Vale finally spoke.
"They don't call twice."
Officer Ramirez looked at him.
"Then let's not disappoint them."
He pressed Accept.
The room remained silent.
No voice came through.
Only breathing.
Slow.
Measured.
As if the person on the other end was counting everyone standing there.
Then a calm voice spoke.
Not male.
Not female.
Distorted beyond recognition.
"So..."
"You found Jonathan."
Ramirez answered firmly.
"State your name."
A brief chuckle.
"You've spent twelve hours asking the wrong question."
The voice continued.
"Names are disposable."
"Responsibilities are not."
Ramirez activated the speakerphone.
"Your organization is finished."
Another soft laugh.
"If that helps you sleep."
Everyone listened in complete silence.
The distorted voice continued.
"You recovered two children."
"You arrested one caretaker."
"You believe you've won."
A pause.
"You've mistaken survival..."
"...for victory."
Officer Mills couldn't stay quiet.
"We have witnesses."
"We have ledgers."
"We have confessions."
The caller answered immediately.
"You have fragments."
"The Circle isn't a building."
"It isn't a database."
"It isn't even an organization."
Samuel frowned.
"Then what are you?"
Several seconds passed before the answer came.
"A tradition."
The word echoed through the room.
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
He didn't deny it.
Dr. Mercer looked exhausted.
"I told you."
"They trained generations."
The caller continued.
"When one caretaker falls..."
"...another steps forward."
"When one recruiter disappears..."
"...another inherits the name."
"When one archive burns..."
"...another already exists."
Ramirez's expression hardened.
"Where?"
Silence.
Then...
"You've already walked through one."
The line went quiet again.
Everyone exchanged confused looks.
"What does that mean?" Officer Mills whispered.
No one answered.
Suddenly...
Lily stepped forward.
She stared at the phone.
"I know that voice."
Every adult froze.
I gently placed my hands on her shoulders.
"Honey..."
"Where did you hear it?"
She thought for several seconds.
"They never talked like that in person."
"They only used that voice..."
"...during bedtime."
Grace nodded immediately.
"It came through the ceiling."
Dr. Mercer slowly looked toward the ventilation system.
"Oh no..."
Ramirez turned.
"What?"
"The audio conditioning."
"The voice wasn't talking to guards."
"It was talking to children."
Lily closed her eyes.
"It always asked the same question."
"What question?"
She whispered,
"Who remembers you?"
No one spoke.
Grace quietly continued,
"If you answered..."
"...they turned off the lights."
The caller spoke again.
"I see Lily remembers."
The detective's grip tightened around the phone.
"If you ever contact these children again..."
The voice interrupted calmly.
"I won't."
"Because someone else will."
Click.
The call ended.
The screen went black.
Silence settled over the office.
Officer Mills finally broke it.
"We need to trace the call."
Ramirez handed him the phone.
"Do it."
Mills connected the device to a forensic tablet.
After less than thirty seconds...
His face changed.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"The signal."
He enlarged a digital map.
The call hadn't originated overseas.
Or from another state.
It came from...
"This facility."
Samuel frowned.
"No..."
Officer Mills zoomed further.
A blinking red dot appeared beneath their location.
One floor lower.
No one moved.
Dr. Mercer whispered,
"Level C."
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"I never knew there was another level."
Jonathan smiled faintly.
"Almost no one did."
Officer Ramirez looked directly at Jonathan.
"Who's down there?"
Jonathan answered honestly.
"I've never met them."
The room stared.
"What?"
"I'm a caretaker."
"Not a member of the Council."
"The Council?"
Jonathan nodded.
"They never reveal themselves."
Samuel stepped closer.
"So everything you've done..."
"...was following orders?"
Jonathan looked at him.
"Yes."
"And now?"
Jonathan's answer surprised everyone.
"Now..."
"...I'm curious."
Officer Mills interrupted.
"The elevators."
"What about them?"
"They've powered on."
Everyone turned.
At the end of the corridor stood a steel elevator door none of them had noticed before.
A small display above it glowed blue.
LEVEL C READY
No one had pressed a button.
No one had called it.
The elevator had activated itself.
With a soft ding, the doors slid open.
Inside...
No one.
Just polished steel walls.
And one envelope lying neatly on the floor.
Ramirez carefully approached.
The envelope bore only one word.
Emma
My heartbeat quickened.
Another letter.
I slowly opened it.
Inside was a single folded page.
Typed.
Not handwritten.
It read:
Emma Carter,
If you are reading this, then Jonathan has failed exactly as we expected.
Please understand something important.
You were never chosen because of Lily.
Lily was chosen because of you.
The words blurred before my eyes.
I continued reading.
There is something about your family that has remained hidden for nearly forty years.
Daniel discovered part of it.
Jonathan never did.
If you truly want answers...
Come to Level C.
Come alone.
At the bottom of the page...
There was no signature.
Only the black circle.
Ramirez immediately took the letter.
"You're not going alone."
Samuel nodded firmly.
"Absolutely not."
Before anyone could argue further...
A tiny voice interrupted.
It was Grace.
She was staring into the open elevator.
"They're waiting."
Everyone looked at her.
"Who?"
Grace slowly pointed upward.
Not toward the elevator.
Toward the mirrored ceiling inside it.
Officer Mills lifted his flashlight.
The mirror reflected all of them...
Except one.
Jonathan Vale.
His reflection wasn't there.
The room fell into stunned silence.
Jonathan himself looked up at the mirror.
For the first time since his arrest...
The calm expression vanished from his face.
He stared at the empty space where his reflection should have been.
Then he whispered, almost to himself,
"...That isn't possible."
At that exact moment, the elevator doors began to close by themselves.
And just before they met...
A small child's hand reached out from inside the empty elevator...
May you like
...and pressed the Door Open button from within.
