Chapter 14: Level Ø

The digital display remained frozen.
WELCOME HOME
No one spoke.
Officer Mills stared at the depth scanner in disbelief.
"Two hundred and thirty feet..."
He looked up at Ramirez.
"...and it's still going."
Samuel slowly leaned against the wall.
"I've worked beneath this estate for nineteen years."
"I never imagined..."
"...there was another world below us."
The scanner beeped again.
248 feet.
261 feet.
Then, finally...
The numbers stopped.
A long silence followed.
The elevator had reached its destination.
Officer Ramirez immediately turned to Jonathan.
"What's down there?"
Jonathan answered without hesitation.
"I don't know."
Ramirez's eyes narrowed.
"I don't believe you."
Jonathan calmly met his gaze.
"You should."
"The Circle is built on compartments."
"Everyone knows only enough to perform their role."
Samuel nodded grimly.
"He's telling the truth."
"I repaired tunnels."
"Mercer handled conditioning."
"Claire recruited families."
"No one saw the whole machine."
Officer Mills muttered,
"So everyone was disposable."
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"Exactly."
Suddenly...
The elevator display changed.
Not floor numbers.
Words.
ACCESS GRANTED
Then another line appeared.
EMMA CARTER
My heart skipped.
Everyone looked at me.
The message continued.
PLEASE ENTER
A third line appeared beneath it.
YOUR FATHER HAS BEEN WAITING
My breathing stopped.
"My father?"
I whispered.
"My father died when I was twelve."
Dr. Mercer slowly looked at Jonathan.
He appeared just as confused as everyone else.
"I've never heard them mention your father."
Samuel frowned.
"Neither have I."
Lily tugged gently at my hand.
"Mom..."
"You said Grandpa died before I was born."
"He did."
I answered automatically.
At least...
That was what I'd believed my entire life.
Without warning...
The smartphone on the desk vibrated again.
This time...
A video call.
No caller ID.
Only the black circle.
Ramirez answered immediately.
The screen remained black for several seconds.
Then an image slowly appeared.
Not live video.
Old surveillance footage.
Date stamp:
March 4, 1998
The picture showed a hospital maternity ward.
A young woman cradled a newborn baby.
I stared.
The woman...
Was my mother.
She looked twenty-five years younger.
Healthy.
Smiling.
Holding an infant wrapped in a pink blanket.
Me.
The room fell silent.
Then the camera shifted.
Another person stepped into frame.
A man in a doctor's coat.
He gently examined the baby.
His face became visible.
I froze.
"I know him..."
Officer Ramirez looked at me.
"Who is it?"
I shook my head slowly.
"I've seen him..."
"...in family photographs."
"My father."
Samuel leaned closer to the screen.
Then his eyes widened.
"No..."
"What?"
Samuel pointed.
"That's impossible."
The doctor wasn't wearing a hospital identification badge.
Instead...
Pinned to his white coat...
Was a small black circle.
The video ended.
A typed message appeared.
YOUR FATHER NEVER LEFT THE FOUNDATION
The screen went black.
Lily looked up at me.
"Mom?"
I couldn't answer.
Every memory of my childhood suddenly felt uncertain.
My father had supposedly died in a construction accident.
There had been no funeral.
Only a closed casket.
I'd been told I was too young to understand.
Had any of it been true?
Officer Mills interrupted.
"Sir."
He pointed toward the elevator shaft.
The cabin was coming back up.
Everyone instinctively stepped away.
The mechanical hum grew louder.
After nearly a minute...
The doors opened.
The elevator was empty.
Except...
For a wheelchair.
Old.
Black.
Covered in dust.
Resting neatly in the center.
A single envelope lay on its seat.
Again...
My name.
Emma.
Ramirez carefully lifted the envelope.
Inside was another handwritten note.
Not typed.
Written in blue ink.
The handwriting felt strangely familiar.
Emma,
If you've received this, then you've already seen the truth about your father.
Don't blame your mother. She believed I was dead too.
Everything they told you about my death was a lie.
I agreed to disappear because I believed I could destroy the Circle from within.
I failed.
They never let me leave.
My hands trembled.
I turned the page.
The final lines were shorter.
Almost rushed.
There is one door beneath Level Ø.
Only one family can open it.
Our family.
If you still trust Daniel's judgment...
Don't come looking for me.
End this instead.
Love,
Dad
Silence.
Complete silence.
Even Jonathan seemed stunned.
"He was alive..."
Samuel whispered.
"For all these years."
Officer Ramirez folded the letter carefully.
"We're verifying everything before we act."
Jonathan quietly shook his head.
"You don't have time."
Ramirez turned sharply.
"Why?"
Jonathan looked toward the elevator.
"Because that wasn't a rescue invitation."
"It was a test."
Officer Mills frowned.
"A test?"
Jonathan nodded.
"They wanted to see whether Emma would choose family..."
"...or the mission."
Dr. Mercer looked uneasy.
"They've always done that."
Just then, the building shuddered.
This time, much harder.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Emergency lights flickered.
Officer Mills checked the structural scanner.
His face turned pale.
"The lower foundation..."
"...is moving."
Samuel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
Mills swallowed.
"...this isn't just an underground facility."
He enlarged the scanner image.
Everyone stared.
The scanner revealed an enormous circular structure beneath Level Ø.
Not natural rock.
Not tunnels.
A colossal hidden chamber.
Nearly half a kilometer wide.
At its center...
One massive steel door.
Perfectly circular.
Nearly twenty feet tall.
The scanner highlighted a single line engraved across its surface.
Even through layers of concrete and stone, the words were still readable.
THE FIRST FAMILY ENTERED HERE
No one spoke.
Then Jonathan whispered something so quietly that only Emma, standing closest to him, could hear.
"They've never been protecting a secret..."
He slowly looked toward the unimaginable structure buried beneath them.
May you like
"They've been guarding whatever is behind that door."
