Chapter 7 - Glass rained across the floor.Ethan pulled Ava down.

Rowan fired toward the ceiling speaker.

Silence.

Then another explosion.

The front wall shook.

“Back door!” Claire shouted.

Daniel grabbed Margaret.

They moved through the kitchen.

Ava pushed herself forward with trembling arms.

Her wheelchair struck the doorway.

“Keep moving!”

Footsteps thundered outside.

Men in black entered through the front windows.

No uniforms.

No badges.

No hesitation.

They moved like trained soldiers.

Rowan returned fire.

“Go!”

They escaped through a basement passage.

It opened into a tunnel beneath the old property.

Ava stared.

“This was here all along?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father built it.”

“For what?”

“Escape.”

Claire led the way.

The tunnel twisted underground.

After nearly ten minutes, they reached a steel door.

Daniel entered a code.

The door opened.

They emerged inside an abandoned railway station.

Ava looked around.

“When was this built?”

“1958.”

“Why?”

Claire answered:

“Because your grandfather knew the network would outlive him.”

They crossed the empty platform.

Ethan followed behind Ava.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

He stopped.

Ava turned.

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You took their money.”

“I did.”

“You entered my life because they told you to.”

“I did.”

“And then you loved me.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“The first time you laughed at me.”

Ava looked away.

“That sounds pathetic.”

“It was real.”

Claire interrupted.

“We don't have time.”

A train approached.

It wasn't a public train.

It was private.

Daniel opened the door.

Inside were computers, maps and dozens of monitors.

Ava stared.

“What is this?”

“The command center.”

“For the network?”

Daniel nodded.

Claire pointed to a central screen.

A directory appeared.

PROJECT ECHO

Ava felt cold.

“What is Project Echo?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Claire did.

“You.”

Ava stared.

“What?”

“Your memories.”

Ava shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

“They didn't simply suppress memories.”

Claire placed a hand on her shoulder.

“They rewrote some of them.”

Ava felt dizzy.

“No.”

“They wanted to create someone who could inherit the trust without knowing what it was.”

“Why me?”

“Because you're the last legitimate heir.”

Daniel opened another file.

The original trust agreement appeared.

Ava read the final clause.

Authority transfers only to a direct descendant who has survived neurological conditioning and demonstrated complete memory reintegration.

She stared.

“Why would my father create this?”

“He didn't.”

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Your grandfather did.”

Ava suddenly remembered something.

A room.

Age seven.

A red door.

Her grandfather kneeling beside her.

“Whatever happens, Ava, don't let them make you forget.”

She had forgotten.

Until now.

Her hands began shaking.

Ethan noticed.

“What happened?”

“I remember.”

“What?”

“A door.”

“Where?”

“My grandfather's house.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“The red door.”

Ava looked at him.

“You know it.”

“Yes.”

“What's behind it?”

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“The original trust records.”

Ava's pulse raced.

“Then why didn't you go there?”

“Because no one knows where the house is.”

Ava whispered:

“I do.”

Everyone stared.

“It was moved.”

“To where?”

Ava closed her eyes.

She remembered a smell.

Pine.

Snow.

Cold air.

Then a number.

“Cabin 17.”

Daniel's face went white.

“No.”

“What?”

“Cabin 17 was destroyed.”

Ava shook her head.

“It wasn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I was there last winter.”

Silence.

Ethan stared.

“You've never been to the mountains.”

“I thought I hadn't.”

Ava suddenly pressed her hands against her temples.

Pain exploded behind her eyes.

Images flashed.

A red door.

A child crying.

A syringe.

Her grandfather shouting.

A man holding a camera.

Then a woman's voice:

“Begin the reset.”

Ava screamed.

The monitors flickered.

One file suddenly opened by itself.

A single sentence appeared.

MEMORY BLOCK 19 REMOVED.

Claire stepped backward.

“What did you do?”

“I didn't do anything.”

Another line appeared.

SUBJECT REMEMBERING.

Daniel looked at the screens.

Then every monitor displayed the same image.

Ava as a child.

Sitting in a chair.

Across from her was a man.

A younger Margaret.

A younger Daniel.

And a third person.

A doctor.

Dr. Bennett.

Ava stared.

“He was there.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

The video continued.

The doctor leaned toward little Ava.

“What is your father's secret?”

Young Ava began crying.

The doctor smiled.

“You'll forget this.”

Then he injected something into her arm.

The video cut.

Ava whispered:

“Stop.”

But another video started.

This one was from the night of the crash.

A camera inside Ava's car.

Someone sat in the passenger seat.

Ava stared.

She knew him.

May you like

Because the person beside her was

Ethan.
