Chapter 13 - The safehouse was destroyed before dawn.Every computer.

Every file.
Every recording.
Gone.
The network had erased its trail.
But Ethan remained.
Or whoever he was.
For hours, he sat in silence.
Ava wouldn't let him near the children.
She didn't trust him.
She didn't know whether she loved him.
And worst of all, she didn't know whether the memories she had of him were real.
Ethan finally spoke.
âI remember a room.â
Ava watched him carefully.
âWhat room?â
âA white room.â
âGo on.â
âThere was a woman.â
âMargaret?â
âNo.â
âWho?â
âShe called me Subject Twelve.â
Ava frowned.
âWhat happened?â
âShe asked me my name.â
âWhat did you say?â
âI said Ethan.â
âAnd?â
âShe slapped me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause that wasn't my name.â
Ava felt cold.
âWhat was your name?â
He looked at her.
âDaniel.â
Ava's heart stopped.
She turned toward Daniel.
Her father was standing by the window.
Daniel stared at Ethan.
âNo.â
Ethan looked back.
âI remember you.â
Daniel's face changed.
âYou were there.â
âWhere?â
âThe facility.â
âWhen?â
âBefore the crash.â
Ethan nodded.
âYou gave me the assignment.â
Daniel staggered backward.
âWhat assignment?â
âTo marry Ava.â
Silence.
Ava looked at her father.
âYou did this.â
Daniel closed his eyes.
âI thought I could use him to get inside the network.â
âTo spy on me?â
âTo protect you.â
âEveryone says that.â
Daniel looked broken.
âI failed.â
Ava's voice became cold.
âYou did more than fail.â
Daniel nodded.
âYes.â
Ethan suddenly grabbed his head.
âWait.â
âWhat?â
âI remember something else.â
Everyone went silent.
âThe real Ethan.â
Ava stared.
âWhat about him?â
âHe wasn't killed.â
âWhat?â
âHe helped me.â
Ava stepped closer.
âWhat does that mean?â
âThe real Ethan knew about the network.â
âWhere is he?â
âI don't know.â
Ethan closed his eyes.
âHe gave me something.â
âWhat?â
âA message.â
âTo whom?â
âYou.â
Ava held her breath.
Ethan whispered:
âHe said, 'Tell Ava the crash was never supposed to kill her.'â
Ava frowned.
âWhat was it supposed to do?â
âWake her.â
Suddenly the door opened.
Rowan entered.
âWe found something.â
He placed a laptop on the table.
The video showed Ava's father.
Recorded months before the crash.
Daniel spoke directly to the camera.
âIf Ava remembers, take her to the lighthouse.â
Ava frowned.
âWhich lighthouse?â
âThe one her grandfather built.â
Claire's face changed.
âThere is no lighthouse.â
Daniel shook his head.
âNot anymore.â
He opened a map.
An old coastal property appeared.
Ava stared.
She remembered it.
A summer house.
A red door.
A lighthouse.
The place from her childhood memories.
âThat's where the trust is.â
Daniel nodded.
âNot the money.â
âWhat, then?â
âThe names.â
âWhose names?â
âEveryone involved.â
Ava looked at him.
âThen that's what they are afraid of.â
âYes.â
âAnd Margaret?â
Daniel shook his head.
âShe's not working for my father.â
Ava froze.
âWhat?â
âYour grandfather is dead.â
âThen who is Margaret working for?â
Daniel looked toward the children.
âThe person who inherited the network.â
âWho?â
He whispered:
âThe first Echo.â
Ethan's face changed.
âWhat is the first Echo?â
Daniel answered:
âYour father.â
Ava stared.
âMy grandfather?â
âNo.â
He looked at Ethan.
âYour real husband.â
Silence.
Ava's mind spun.
âThe real Ethan.â
Daniel nodded.
âHe was the first successful memory replacement.â
Ava couldn't breathe.
âThe man I marriedâŠâ
âWas the experiment.â
Ava looked at the children.
âAnd my children?â
Daniel's expression darkened.
âThey were the next generation.â
The lighthouse stood at the edge of the coast.
By sunset, they reached it.
Inside was a metal staircase.
Ava climbed slowly.
At the top was a room.
One table.
One chair.
One computer.
The screen turned on.
A woman appeared.
Margaret.
Ava's blood ran cold.
âYou can't escape me.â
Ava stepped closer.
âWhere are you?â
Margaret smiled.
âCloser than you think.â
The screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
Ava saw the room around her.
Her own face.
Everyone behind her.
Then a second camera.
Outside the lighthouse.
A black car.
Someone stepped out.
Ava recognized him instantly.
The real Ethan.
Alive.
Standing beside Margaret.
May you like
And Margaret whispered through the speakers:
âNow ask him why he married you.â
