Chapter 11 - The corridor became chaos.Doors opened one after another.

People stumbled into the hallway.

Some were adults.

Some were teenagers.

Some looked barely old enough to speak.

Ava stared at them.

“Who are they?”

Claire answered:

“Echo subjects.”

“Why are they here?”

“To test the same process on different people.”

Rowan shouted:

“Keep moving!”

Gunfire erupted behind them.

Ethan grabbed Mia.

Ava looked at him.

“Don't touch her.”

“I can carry her.”

“She doesn't know you.”

Mia stared at Ethan.

Then whispered:

“He's not my father.”

Ava's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Mia pointed down the hallway.

“That man is.”

A figure stood beneath the red emergency light.

Daniel.

Ava's father.

Except Mia wasn't looking at Daniel.

She was pointing to another man.

Ava turned.

A stranger stepped from the shadows.

Same face as Daniel.

Same voice.

But younger.

Ava whispered:

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“Your grandfather.”

Silence.

Daniel staggered backward.

“No.”

The older man laughed.

“You really thought I was dead?”

Ava stared.

“Grandfather?”

He nodded.

“You finally remember.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“I was supposed to be forgotten.”

Grandfather looked at Ava.

“You ruined everything.”

Mia clutched Ava.

“Mom…”

Grandfather's expression softened.

“Don't worry.”

He looked at Ava.

“She'll remember soon.”

Ava asked:

“What?”

“Where you hid the key.”

Ava frowned.

“What key?”

“The one you stole as a child.”

She remembered.

The metal key from the box.

She had carried it for years.

Then she realized.

She had never lost it.

She had never searched for it.

It was hanging from her necklace.

The entire time.

Ava grabbed it.

Grandfather smiled.

“There it is.”

Rowan raised his gun.

“Drop your weapon.”

Grandfather laughed.

“You still believe this is a police operation.”

The lights turned off.

When they returned, he was gone.

Daniel stared at the empty hallway.

“No.”

Ava looked at him.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he would have killed you.”

Ava's voice became cold.

“He already tried.”

They reached an elevator.

It descended deeper than the hospital basement.

Far deeper.

The doors opened.

Ava found a room filled with files.

At the center was a giant metal door.

Her key fit.

The door unlocked.

Inside was a vault.

And inside the vault was the original trust.

Not money.

Not documents.

Videos.

Hundreds of them.

Ava opened the first.

Her grandfather spoke to the camera.

“Everyone thinks this network exists to control money.”

He smiled.

“They are wrong.”

The screen changed.

A map appeared.

Names.

Governments.

Corporations.

Banks.

Intelligence agencies.

Ava stared.

“What is this?”

Daniel whispered:

“The real network.”

Her grandfather continued.

“Money is only the bait.”

The video shifted.

A list of people appeared.

Then a final sentence:

We don't buy loyalty. We manufacture memory.

Ava felt sick.

The entire program was bigger than her family.

Much bigger.

Then a folder appeared.

ECHO-2: MIA

Ava opened it.

The genetic profile appeared.

She stared.

Then another file.

ECHO-3

A photograph.

Same eyes.

Same face.

But a boy.

Seven years old.

Ava's heart stopped.

“There's another child.”

Mia whispered:

“My brother.”

“Where is he?”

She pointed at the screen.

The file listed his location.

SUBJECT ECHO-3: CURRENTLY WITH ETHAN HALE.

Ava slowly looked toward Ethan.

He was staring at the screen.

He whispered:

“I thought he was dead.”

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Bring Mia to the old estate.”

Ethan froze.

“Who is this?”

The voice laughed.

“You know exactly who.”

The call ended.

Ethan looked at Ava.

“He has your son.”

Ava felt the world tilt.

Then Mia screamed.

“Mom!”

Ava turned.

Mia was staring at her phone.

A message had appeared.

A photograph.

A little boy.

Tied to a chair.

May you like

And standing behind him was Margaret.

Alive.
