Chapter 15 - The first helicopter touched down on the beach. Then the second.

Then the third.

Lights swept across the lighthouse.

Ava held Mia's hand.

Her son stood beside Claire.

Daniel looked toward the ocean.

“There are too many.”

Rowan checked his weapon.

“We don't have enough people.”

Ethan looked at Ava.

“There's another way out.”

“Where?”

He pointed downward.

“Below the lighthouse.”

They ran.

Behind them, soldiers stormed the upper floors.

The underground tunnel led toward the cliffs.

Ava pushed herself faster than she thought possible.

Her legs hurt.

Her lungs burned.

But she kept moving.

Mia looked at her.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to die?”

Ava squeezed her hand.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

Ava looked back.

Because for the first time in her life, she wasn't running from the truth.

She was running with it.

They reached the end of the tunnel.

A metal door opened onto the beach.

Boats waited.

Claire helped the children aboard.

Daniel stayed behind.

Ava stared.

“You're coming.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

He smiled sadly.

“I spent my life running from my father's mistakes.”

He looked toward the lighthouse.

“You shouldn't have to spend yours doing the same.”

Ava shook her head.

“You're my father.”

“And I failed you.”

“You can make that right.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

The two men exchanged a glance.

Then Daniel gave Ethan a small nod.

“Take care of her.”

The real Ethan nodded.

Daniel stayed.

The boat pulled away.

Minutes later, the lighthouse exploded.

Ava watched flames rise into the night.

She cried without making a sound.

For the first time, she mourned the man her father had been.

Not the monster.

Not the protector.

Just her father.

The boat reached the mainland before sunrise.

They entered a secure government facility.

Rowan led them through a series of checkpoints.

Ava looked around.

“You said the network was destroyed.”

“It was.”

“Then why are we here?”

Rowan stopped.

A woman in a dark suit approached.

She carried a file.

“Ava Hale?”

“Yes.”

The woman handed her a document.

“You need to read this.”

Ava opened it.

It was her birth record.

But something was wrong.

The listed date was incorrect.

So was the hospital.

And the mother's name.

Ava looked up.

“This isn't mine.”

The woman shook her head.

“It's the original.”

Ava's heart stopped.

“What?”

“You were never registered as Ava Hale.”

Silence.

“Then who am I?”

The woman placed another photograph in her hand.

A newborn baby.

The same green eyes.

The same birthmark.

Ava stared.

The label underneath read:

SUBJECT ZERO

She looked toward Ethan.

He had gone pale.

“What?”

“I know that photograph.”

“From where?”

“From my father's files.”

Ava stared at him.

“Who is Subject Zero?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then:

“Your mother.”

Ava felt the ground disappear beneath her.

“My mother?”

“She was the first successful experiment.”

Ava shook her head.

“No.”

“She isn't dead.”

Ava stared.

“What?”

Ethan whispered:

“She has been alive this entire time.”

The woman in the suit nodded.

“She has been waiting for you.”

“Where?”

The woman pointed toward a glass door.

Ava walked forward.

The door opened.

A hospital room stood beyond it.

A woman sat beside the window.

Her hair was silver.

Her face was older.

But Ava knew her.

She had seen those eyes in old photographs.

In dreams.

In memories that didn't make sense.

The woman turned.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Ava.”

Ava couldn't move.

“Mom?”

The woman stood.

“Yes.”

Ava's knees weakened.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you leave me?”

Her mother shook her head.

“I didn't.”

“Then who?”

Her mother looked toward the hallway.

And whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Ava felt the old fear return.

“Why?”

Her mother reached for her hand.

“Because he wanted the network to believe you were the heir.”

“But I am.”

“No.”

Ava frowned.

Her mother smiled sadly.

“You are not the heir.”

“Then what am I?”

Her mother whispered:

“You are the creator.”

Ava froze.

“What?”

“Your memories weren't altered to control you.”

“Then why?”

“To hide what you built.”

Ava stared.

“I built it?”

“When you were a child.”

“That isn't possible.”

Her mother shook her head.

“You were a genius. Your grandfather used your research. He turned it into the network.”

Ava couldn't breathe.

“All of this
”

“Started with you.”

She looked at Ethan.

Then Claire.

Then her children.

Every broken life.

Every lie.

Every death.

All connected to something she had unknowingly created.

Her mother squeezed her hand.

“There is one final secret.”

Ava swallowed.

“What?”

“Your grandfather didn't create Project Echo.”

“Who did?”

Her mother looked directly into her eyes.

“You did.”

Silence.

Ava stared.

Then the monitor beside them beeped.

A file appeared on the screen.

PROJECT ECHO: ORIGINAL AUTHOR

The name loaded.

AVA HART.

Ava stepped backward.

“No.”

Her mother whispered:

“You remembered everything except the one memory they were most afraid you'd recover.”

Ava looked at her.

“What memory?”

Her mother smiled through tears.

“The day you invented Echo.”

The screen flickered.

A video began playing.

A little Ava sat at a desk.

She looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

Then the child spoke words that froze the entire room.

“If you're watching this, it means they finally forgot who was really in control.”

The video paused.

Ava stared at her younger self.

Then the recording continued.

“And if I ever lose my memory
”

The child leaned closer.

“
tell me one thing.”

Ava's heart pounded.

The younger Ava whispered:

“Never trust Ethan.”

The room went silent.

Ava slowly turned toward her husband.

Ethan stood frozen.

Behind him, his real face was no longer frightened.

It was smiling.

And Ava finally understood.

The crash wasn't the beginning.

The network wasn't the beginning.

Margaret wasn't the beginning.

Even her grandfather wasn't the beginning.

The beginning had been Ava herself.

And now, after twenty years of stolen memories, she was finally remembering everything.

Ethan took one step toward her.

“Ava
”

She stepped backward.

“Don't.”

His smile vanished.

She looked at the children.

Then at her mother.

Then at the screen.

Her entire life had been built on a lie.

But somewhere inside her mind was the truth.

A truth powerful enough to destroy everyone who had ever betrayed her.

Ethan whispered:

“You don't remember what you became.”

Ava looked straight into his eyes.

“Then I'll remember.”

The lights went out.

And somewhere in the darkness, a server came alive.

A single line appeared on the screen:

PROJECT ECHO: PHASE TWO INITIATED.
