Chapter 12 - Ava didn't think.She moved.

Ethan grabbed her arm.

“Wait.”

“Let go.”

“We don't know if it's real.”

“It is.”

“You can't walk into a trap.”

“He's my son.”

Mia screamed:

“That's my brother!”

Rowan examined the photograph.

“Metadata says it was taken eleven minutes ago.”

Ava looked at him.

“Where?”

He traced the image.

“Old Hale estate.”

The same house they had escaped hours earlier.

Claire shook her head.

“They want us there.”

“Good.”

Ava looked at Ethan.

“We're going.”

The estate was surrounded by armed men.

No police could approach without starting a war.

So Ava entered through the underground tunnel.

She carried the key.

Mia stayed beside her.

Ethan followed.

Claire and Daniel came behind.

Rowan stayed outside, coordinating backup.

They entered the old library.

Margaret was waiting.

She looked untouched.

No injury.

No fear.

She held a gun against the boy's head.

Ava froze.

“Let him go.”

Margaret smiled.

“You always were dramatic.”

Ava's eyes locked on the boy.

“Mia?”

“I'm here.”

The boy looked at her.

His eyes widened.

“Mom?”

Ava's chest broke open.

“Yes.”

The boy began crying.

Margaret moved the gun.

“That's enough.”

Ava took one step.

“Why did you do this?”

“Because your father ruined everything.”

“My father?”

“Your father wanted to destroy the network.”

Margaret laughed.

“He believed he could save you.”

“Why me?”

“Because the trust was designed around you.”

Ava frowned.

“The trust?”

Margaret nodded.

“You are the final biological heir.”

“So you needed me alive.”

“Until you signed.”

“Then why try to kill me?”

Margaret smiled.

“Because once you remembered, you couldn't be controlled.”

Ava felt cold.

“So the crash
”

“Was meant to erase the last memories.”

“And the wheelchair?”

“Medical immobilization made the conditioning easier.”

“You drugged me.”

“Yes.”

Mia screamed:

“You're evil!”

Margaret laughed.

“That's what people say when they don't understand power.”

Then Ethan stepped forward.

Margaret raised the gun.

“Stay back.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“You used me.”

“Both can be true.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“You took my children.”

Margaret's face changed.

“They were never yours.”

Silence.

Ava stared.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked at Ethan.

“Ask him.”

Ava turned.

Ethan looked devastated.

“Ask me what?”

Margaret's smile returned.

“You are not Ethan Hale.”

The room went silent.

Ava stared.

“What?”

Margaret laughed.

“Your husband is a replacement.”

Ethan's face went white.

“No.”

Margaret continued:

“The real Ethan died before you met him.”

Ava stepped backward.

“That isn't true.”

Margaret looked at her.

“You married a manufactured identity.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Stop.”

“Your memories were fabricated.”

“No.”

Margaret looked at Ava.

“You wanted to know why the photograph existed before your marriage?”

Ava couldn't speak.

Margaret answered:

“Because the man you remember meeting was never the man standing beside you.”

Claire whispered:

“A replacement.”

Margaret nodded.

“An Echo subject.”

Ava stared at Ethan.

“You don't know who you are.”

Ethan began shaking.

Then images flashed through his mind.

A white room.

A needle.

A doctor.

A number.

SUBJECT ECHO-17.

He fell to his knees.

Ava rushed toward him.

But before she could reach him, Margaret fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Rowan's team stormed the building.

Gunfire erupted.

Margaret fled through a hidden door.

Ava grabbed Mia and the boy.

Ethan remained on the floor, staring into nothing.

Claire pulled Ava toward the exit.

“Go!”

They ran.

Outside, helicopters approached.

The estate burned behind them.

Ava held both children.

Mia cried.

The boy clung to her.

Ethan stood in the middle of the road.

Ava looked back.

“Ethan!”

He didn't move.

Then he slowly raised his head.

His eyes were empty.

May you like

And he said:

“My name isn't Ethan.”
