Chapter 14 - The door exploded inward.Ava turned.

The real Ethan entered.

He looked exactly like the man she remembered.

Same eyes.

Same crooked smile.

Same scar on his chin.

For one terrifying second, Ava couldn't move.

“Ethan?”

He nodded.

“Ava.”

The other Ethan stood behind her.

The replacement.

Ava's heart broke in two directions.

“Which one is real?”

The real Ethan looked at him.

“He is.”

The replacement stepped forward.

“I remember you.”

The real Ethan shook his head.

“You remember pieces.”

“Enough.”

Margaret entered.

She held no gun.

She didn't need one.

She looked at Ava.

“You finally made it.”

Ava stared.

“You took my children.”

“I preserved them.”

“You stole them.”

“I raised them.”

“You lied to them.”

“To protect them.”

Ava laughed bitterly.

“You really love that word.”

Margaret ignored her.

“The network was never supposed to become this.”

“Then what was it supposed to be?”

“A security system.”

“For whom?”

“For the family.”

“Which family?”

Margaret looked toward the real Ethan.

“His.”

Ava froze.

“You?”

Ethan nodded.

“My family built the system before your grandfather took control.”

Ava looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Ethan continued.

“Your grandfather stole it.”

“And my father?”

“He tried to destroy it.”

“Then why did he create Echo?”

“To undo what your grandfather had done.”

Ava felt dizzy.

Everyone had been both victim and villain.

Every generation passing the poison down.

Margaret stepped forward.

“You were never supposed to know any of this.”

Ava looked at her.

“Then why tell me now?”

“Because it's time to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“The trust.”

Margaret gestured toward the computer.

A document appeared.

Ava's grandfather's final instruction.

Upon complete memory restoration, the heir must choose one of two paths.

Continue the network.

Or destroy it.

Ava stared.

“What happens if I destroy it?”

“Every identity database disappears.”

“And the money?”

“Frozen.”

“Millions of people?”

“Protected.”

“And my children?”

“Free.”

Ava looked at the screen.

“What do you want?”

Margaret smiled.

“I want you to continue.”

“Why?”

“Because someone always has to control the system.”

Ava looked at her family.

Daniel.

Claire.

Ethan.

The replacement.

Her children.

Every one of them had been trapped by the same machine.

She slowly reached toward the keyboard.

Margaret smiled.

Then Ava stopped.

“There is something wrong.”

Margaret's expression changed.

“What?”

“The second option.”

“Yes?”

“It says destroy the network.”

Ava pointed at the screen.

“But it doesn't say destroy the trust.”

Silence.

She remembered her grandfather.

The key.

The red door.

The lighthouse.

Suddenly she understood.

The network was only a shell.

The real control wasn't in the files.

It was in her memory.

She looked at Daniel.

“That's why I was conditioned.”

“Yes.”

“They needed me to remember the final command.”

“Yes.”

“And they never realized
”

Ava smiled.

“
that my father already taught me how to destroy it.”

She pressed a sequence.

The computer screamed.

Files began deleting.

Margaret lunged.

Ethan stopped her.

She struck him.

He pushed her away.

Claire grabbed the children.

Rowan entered with armed officers.

The servers overheated.

Screens went black.

Margaret screamed:

“You don't know what you're doing!”

Ava kept typing.

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

The final file appeared.

CORE ACCESS

Password required.

Ava entered one word.

MIA

Access granted.

Every database began collapsing.

Names disappeared.

Accounts froze.

False identities vanished.

The network went dark.

Margaret fell to her knees.

“No.”

Ava turned.

“It's over.”

Margaret laughed.

Then smiled.

“You really think I was the final enemy?”

Ava froze.

“What?”

Margaret looked toward the real Ethan.

“He'll tell you.”

Ava turned.

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Tell me what?”

He swallowed.

“The network had one final branch.”

“Where?”

“Inside the government.”

Ava's blood went cold.

Margaret laughed.

“You didn't destroy it.”

“You only woke it.”

The lighthouse shook.

Outside, several helicopters appeared.

Not police.

Not military.

Black.

Unmarked.

A voice came through the radio.

“Operation Nightglass is active.”

Ethan looked at Ava.

“We have maybe five minutes.”

Ava stared at the helicopters.

Then at her children.

Then at the burning servers.

She understood.

May you like

The family war was over.

Something much larger had just begun.
