Chapter 9: The Founder’s Last Confession

The explosion rolled beneath the estate like an earthquake.
The marble floor cracked.
Dust poured from the ceiling in thick gray clouds.
The lights flickered once...
Twice...
Then emergency power flooded the mansion in deep crimson.
A mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.
Structural breach detected.
Vault level compromised.
Emergency lockdown initiated.
Steel blast doors crashed down throughout the mansion.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Every corridor became isolated.
Every exit sealed.
The Ashford Estate had transformed into a fortress.
And now...
Everyone inside was trapped.
"Everyone move!"
Arthur Bennett shouted.
The Sentinel operators immediately split into teams.
One group surrounded Lady Margaret.
Another covered Elena.
A third aimed their rifles at Adrian's men.
No one fired.
Not yet.
Because everyone understood the same thing.
If shooting started inside a damaged underground structure...
The mansion itself could collapse.
Then the floor beneath the grand staircase gave way.
Marble shattered.
The staircase tilted violently.
Julian looked up just in time to see Elena lose her footing.
"Elena!"
Without thinking, he lunged forward.
She reached instinctively toward the nearest hand.
His.
For one brief second...
Their fingers locked together.
The floor disappeared beneath them.
They plunged into darkness.
Arthur shouted,
"ELENA!"
The hole swallowed them both.
Concrete, dust, and broken stone crashed after them.
Then...
Silence.
Underground
Julian hit the ground first.
Pain exploded through his shoulder.
A second later, Elena landed beside him.
The air filled with dust so thick neither could see.
Somewhere above...
Faint voices echoed.
Then another collapse buried the opening.
Darkness.
Complete darkness.
Julian coughed violently.
"Elena?"
"...I'm here."
"You hurt?"
"My ankle..."
"I think it's twisted."
Julian pulled the flashlight from his phone.
No signal.
No network.
Only 31% battery remained.
The narrow beam revealed an ancient stone corridor.
Not concrete.
Stone.
Old.
Far older than the mansion itself.
Elena stared ahead.
"This shouldn't exist."
Above ground...
Arthur reached the collapsed opening.
"Get excavation equipment!"
A Sentinel engineer shook his head.
"We can't."
"The support beams are failing."
"If we dig from here..."
"...the lower chambers could collapse completely."
Arthur slammed his fist against the wall.
"There has to be another entrance."
Lady Margaret suddenly spoke.
"There is."
Everyone turned.
"The Founder's Passage."
Arthur froze.
"I thought it had been sealed."
"So did your father."
Meanwhile...
Julian helped Elena to her feet.
They slowly followed the corridor.
Ancient lantern brackets lined the walls.
Dust covered everything.
Nobody had walked here in decades.
Or perhaps...
Generations.
Julian frowned.
"What is this place?"
Elena ran her fingers across faded carvings.
"Our family's first cellar."
"No."
She looked closer.
"Older."
"Much older."
After several minutes...
The corridor opened into a circular chamber.
In the center stood a wooden desk.
Untouched by time.
Covered beneath thick glass.
Beside it...
An old film projector.
A reel already loaded.
Julian looked around.
"What is this?"
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
She recognized the Ashford family crest carved into the floor.
Only founders had ever used this symbol.
Then she saw the brass plaque.
FOUNDER RECORDING ROOM
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"My grandfather..."
The projector suddenly clicked.
Electricity?
Impossible.
Yet somehow...
The old machine came alive.
The reel began turning.
Static filled the chamber.
A blurred image slowly appeared on the white stone wall.
Then...
Edward Ashford.
Older.
Tired.
Looking directly into the camera.
Julian stared.
"I've seen his portrait."
Elena couldn't speak.
Edward took a slow breath.
"If you are watching this..."
"...then the family has failed."
Julian exchanged a glance with Elena.
The old man continued.
"This message is not intended for the Board."
"Nor for the courts."
"Only for the person destined to carry the Legacy."
His eyes seemed fixed on Elena.
"My granddaughter..."
"If you are here..."
"...I'm sorry."
Tears welled in Elena's eyes.
Edward removed his glasses.
For the first time...
He looked less like a billionaire.
More like a grandfather.
"You will one day hear terrible things about me."
"Some will be true."
"Some will not."
"You deserve the whole truth."
Julian listened without blinking.
Edward continued.
"Adrian was never murdered."
Elena's eyes widened.
Julian leaned closer.
"Nor did he die."
"I sent him away."
The room fell silent.
"Not because I hated him."
"Because someone wanted him dead."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
The recording continued.
"Thirty-one years ago..."
"I discovered that our family had been infiltrated."
"Not by competitors."
"Not by politicians."
"By one of our own."
Elena whispered,
"A traitor..."
Edward nodded in the recording as though hearing her.
"I never discovered who."
Julian looked confused.
"If he didn't know..."
The old man continued.
"The traitor manipulated both my sons."
"One toward loyalty."
"The other toward ambition."
"Their conflict was manufactured."
Elena's breathing became shallow.
Everything they believed...
Everything the family had taught for decades...
Might have been a lie.
Edward leaned closer to the camera.
"If Adrian returns..."
"Listen before judging."
Julian slowly turned toward Elena.
"He knew..."
She nodded silently.
"He expected this."
Then Edward's expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
The kind neither Julian nor Elena had imagined possible.
"If this recording reaches you..."
"...then the traitor has probably succeeded."
The projector crackled.
For a second...
The image distorted.
Then Edward spoke one final sentence.
One that froze both of them.
"The enemy..."
"...is not Adrian."
The screen flickered.
Static.
Silence.
Then the image returned for barely three seconds.
Edward looked suddenly toward someone standing behind the camera.
His face turned pale.
He whispered only one name.
"...Arthur."
The film burned.
The projector stopped.
Smoke curled from the reel.
Darkness returned.
Neither Julian nor Elena spoke.
Finally...
Julian broke the silence.
"No..."
"He couldn't mean..."
Elena stared at the dead projector.
Arthur Bennett.
The man who had protected her since childhood.
The man her grandfather trusted more than anyone.
The man who had just ordered Sentinel to rescue them.
"No..."
she whispered.
"I don't believe it."
A slow clap echoed through the chamber.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Julian spun around, raising the flashlight.
A figure emerged from the shadows.
Not Adrian.
Not Arthur.
Victor Kane.
He looked exhausted.
His shoulder still bled beneath the bandage.
But his eyes...
Held decades of regret.
"You shouldn't believe it."
he said quietly.
"Because Edward never finished the recording."
Julian frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor reached into his coat.
He removed...
The second half of the film reel.
"The confession..."
"...has another ending."
