Chapter 4: The Founder’s Throne

Julian didn't move.

The marble lobby remained frozen, as though even time had paused to witness the impossible.

Yesterday, these people jumped the moment he spoke.

Today...

Not one of them looked at him.

Every pair of eyes was fixed on Elena.

Martin, the Head of Security, stepped forward respectfully.

"Mr. Ashford, Conference Room One is prepared."

Julian let out a cold laugh.

"You expect me to walk into some kind of ambush?"

"No, sir."

Martin's voice was steady.

"I expect you to attend the meeting the Board has requested."

"The Board works for me."

A murmur rippled through the lobby.

Arthur Bennett adjusted his glasses.

"No, Julian."

"They never did."

Thirty Minutes Later

Conference Room One occupied the entire top floor of the Grand Aurora Resort.

It was the most secure room in the building.

Biometric locks.

Encrypted communication systems.

Soundproof walls.

Only members of the Board and founding representatives were ever allowed inside.

Ironically...

Julian had never questioned why his fingerprint had never been added to the permanent access list.

Every time he entered, Arthur had opened the door for him.

He had assumed it was simply a formality.

Today, the truth felt like a slap.

The biometric scanner flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

Arthur placed his own hand against the scanner.

Green.

The massive oak doors unlocked with a quiet click.

Julian stared.

"You've had permanent access all these years?"

Arthur answered calmly.

"For forty-six years."

Inside, fourteen people were already seated around a circular walnut table.

The empire's most powerful decision-makers.

The Chief Financial Officer.

The General Counsel.

Regional Presidents from Europe, Asia, and North America.

The Head of the Family Office.

Not one of them stood when Julian entered.

But when Elena walked in...

Every person rose.

Including Arthur.

Including the eighty-year-old directors who rarely stood for anyone.

Julian's jaw tightened.

"What kind of performance is this?"

No one answered.

Elena walked past the chair traditionally reserved for the CEO.

Instead...

She approached an older chair positioned slightly higher than the rest.

It had remained empty for nearly two decades.

A brass plaque was mounted beneath it.

Founder's Representative

She hesitated.

Her father had once told her,

"The day you sit in that chair will be the day you stop living as my daughter and begin living as the guardian of generations."

She slowly took her seat.

Arthur spoke first.

"The meeting is now in session."

Julian slammed both hands on the table.

"I demand an explanation."

Arthur nodded.

"You shall have one."

He pressed a button.

The room darkened.

A projector illuminated the far wall.

A family tree appeared.

Not Julian's.

Elena's.

The Ashford bloodline stretched back more than a century.

Photographs shifted across the screen.

The first seaside hotel.

The first mountain resort.

The first international acquisition.

Then came hundreds of subsidiaries.

Luxury railways.

Private aviation.

Exclusive island resorts.

Investment companies.

Everything connected.

Everything led back to one entity.

Ashford Family Trust.

Arthur turned toward Julian.

"Please identify where your ownership begins."

Julian frowned.

"The parent company."

Arthur zoomed in.

"There is no parent company."

"What?"

"The corporations you believed controlled the empire..."

"They are all owned."

"Owned by whom?"

Arthur enlarged another layer.

Holding companies.

Private trusts.

Foundations.

Voting agreements.

Another layer.

Another.

Another.

Like Russian nesting dolls.

Until finally...

Only one box remained.

Ashford Family Legacy Trust

Beneficiaries:

The Ashford Bloodline.

Julian's confidence wavered.

"This proves nothing."

Arthur smiled faintly.

"It proves everything."

The General Counsel slid a leather binder across the table.

"Please open page seventeen."

Julian did.

His hands stopped.

His own signature.

He remembered the document.

It had been part of a stack of corporate restructuring papers years earlier.

He had signed dozens that day.

Without reading.

Arthur spoke softly.

"You signed exactly where our attorneys expected."

Julian looked up.

"What is this?"

"A Delegated Executive Agreement."

"I never agreed to—"

"You did."

"You simply never read it."

The room fell silent.

Arthur continued.

"You accepted the title of Chief Executive Officer."

"You accepted performance incentives."

"You accepted executive authority."

"But ownership..."

He paused.

"...was never offered."

Julian looked toward Elena.

"You knew?"

She answered honestly.

"Yes."

"You lied to me for nine years."

"No."

"I simply never corrected your assumptions."

"You manipulated me!"

Her expression hardened.

"I begged you to review every major contract."

"You always said..."

She mimicked his dismissive tone perfectly.

"Lawyers exist so I don't have to read paperwork."

Several directors exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Because they remembered him saying exactly that.

More than once.

Julian stood.

"This is fraud."

The General Counsel immediately pushed another document toward him.

"The marriage agreement."

Julian opened it.

Every page bore both signatures.

His.

And Elena's.

Highlighted in yellow was one sentence.

Marriage shall not alter ownership of pre-existing family assets held in irrevocable trust.

His face turned pale.

"I don't..."

"I don't remember this."

Elena looked at him sadly.

"You didn't read that one either."

Before Julian could respond...

The conference room doors opened.

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman entered slowly with the assistance of a cane.

Silver hair.

Elegant navy suit.

Sharp blue eyes.

Arthur stood immediately.

"So did every director."

Even Elena rose.

Julian frowned.

"Who is she?"

Arthur answered with unmistakable respect.

"Lady Margaret Ashford."

Julian blinked.

"The founder's widow?"

Arthur nodded.

"The last surviving member of the First Generation."

Julian had seen photographs.

She hadn't appeared publicly in over fifteen years.

Rumors claimed she was too ill to travel.

Apparently...

The rumors were wrong.

Lady Margaret walked directly toward Elena.

She ignored everyone else.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small velvet box.

Inside rested an antique gold signet ring engraved with the Ashford crest.

She took Elena's hand.

"For nine years..."

"You honored your grandfather's final wish."

"You loved without using wealth."

"You served without demanding recognition."

"You endured humiliation to protect this family."

A tear rolled silently down Elena's cheek.

Lady Margaret smiled gently.

"No more."

She slid the ring onto Elena's finger.

"I formally recognize you as the Guardian of the Ashford Legacy."

Every director bowed their heads.

Arthur's voice echoed through the room.

"Recorded at 9:42 a.m."

"The Founder's Ring has been transferred."

Julian stared in disbelief.

"What does that even mean?"

Arthur answered.

"It means every emergency power in this empire now rests with Elena."

Julian suddenly laughed.

A loud, desperate laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

"You expect me to believe one ring changes everything?"

"No."

Arthur replied.

"The ring changes nothing."

"It simply identifies the person who already possesses the authority."

At that exact moment...

Arthur's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Excuse me."

He stepped into the hallway.

Thirty seconds later, he returned.

For the first time that morning...

The old chairman looked genuinely worried.

"What happened?" Elena asked.

Arthur lowered his voice.

"Vault Seven."

Her father's expression darkened instantly.

"Impossible."

"What is Vault Seven?" Julian demanded.

Nobody answered.

Arthur looked directly at Elena.

"The security seal has been broken."

"By whom?"

Arthur handed her the surveillance photograph.

The image showed a gray-haired man standing inside a restricted underground archive.

Victor Kane.

He was holding an old leather ledger in his hands.

The ledger everyone believed had been destroyed decades ago.

Arthur whispered,

"If he has that book..."

Elena finished the sentence herself.

"...then he knows the truth about Black Ledger."

Julian frowned.

"Black Ledger?"

Lady Margaret closed her eyes.

After nearly twenty years...

The name had returned.

And if Victor Kane had truly stolen it...

The battle for the empire had just become something far more dangerous than a corporate takeover.

Because Black Ledger contained a secret capable of destroying not only Elena...

But the entire Ashford family.

End of Chapter 4...

Coming in Chapter 5: Victor Kane releases the first page of the mysterious Black Ledger to Julian. It reveals that the Ashford Empire was built on a hidden pact made thirty years ago, and one name in the ledger suggests that someone Elena trusted may have betrayed her family long before Julian ever entered their lives.
