Chapter 8: The Traitor at the Table

The sound of Lady Margaret's cane striking the marble floor echoed through the entrance hall.
No one moved.
Even the Sentinel operators, trained to react instantly, hesitated.
Because the man standing at the top of the staircase wasn't pointing a gun.
He was smiling.
The same calm smile that appeared in a faded family portrait taken forty years earlier.
Adrian Ashford.
The heir who had supposedly died in a plane crash.
He descended the staircase one step at a time, his polished shoes clicking against the marble.
His movements were unhurried.
Confident.
As if he were returning home after a short vacation instead of three decades.
"Good evening," he said pleasantly.
"I see the house has been well maintained."
Arthur Bennett's voice was icy.
"You should be dead."
Adrian chuckled.
"I've heard that many times."
The Sentinel commander raised his rifle.
"Stop where you are."
Adrian didn't even glance at the weapon.
Instead, he looked directly at Elena.
"You look so much like your mother."
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
"You don't get to say her name."
"I wasn't going to."
"I was remembering her smile."
For the first time since entering the mansion...
Sadness crossed Adrian's face.
It disappeared almost instantly.
Victor Kane stepped forward despite the blood still soaking through the bandage on his shoulder.
"You shouldn't have come here."
Adrian smiled.
"You knew I would."
"I hoped you'd stay hidden."
"I've been hidden long enough."
Arthur's voice thundered through the hall.
"Sentinel."
"Arrest him."
The operators tightened their formation.
Yet before anyone could advance...
Adrian slowly raised one hand.
"I wouldn't."
The hall fell silent.
"Why not?" Arthur demanded.
"Because before your men touch me..."
"...you should look at what I'm holding."
Only then did everyone notice the old leather document case tucked beneath his arm.
He opened it carefully.
Inside lay a single folded parchment.
Its paper had yellowed with age.
The wax seal was intact.
Lady Margaret's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
Arthur whispered.
"It can't be."
Adrian unfolded the document.
Across the top...
In Edward Ashford's unmistakable handwriting...
were five words.
Declaration of Successive Authority
Arthur took one involuntary step backward.
"Impossible."
"My father destroyed that document."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"He believed he had."
Julian stood silently near the doorway.
He understood almost nothing.
Yet one thing had become painfully clear.
Every secret uncovered led to another buried even deeper.
Adrian held up the parchment.
"My father signed this six months before my disappearance."
He looked around the room.
"It appoints me..."
"...as his sole successor."
The room exploded with disbelief.
Lady Margaret slammed her cane against the floor.
"That's a lie!"
Adrian's expression remained calm.
"Read it."
Arthur didn't move.
Neither did Elena.
Finally...
The General Counsel stepped forward.
With trembling hands, she accepted the parchment.
The room watched in complete silence.
She examined the seal.
"The wax is authentic."
She inspected the signature.
"The handwriting appears genuine."
She looked at the paper itself.
"The parchment dates..."
"...to approximately thirty-five years ago."
Julian frowned.
"So..."
"This could be real?"
"No."
Arthur snapped.
"It cannot."
The General Counsel swallowed.
"I didn't say it was valid."
"I said..."
"...it appears authentic."
Adrian smiled faintly.
"For thirty years..."
"You built an empire on the assumption that I was dead."
He turned toward Elena.
"You inherited a throne that was never yours."
Elena finally spoke.
"If you were alive..."
"Why didn't you come back?"
The question lingered in the air.
Adrian looked at her for several long seconds.
Then...
He laughed.
Not loudly.
Not cruelly.
Just sadly.
"Because your grandfather tried to kill me."
The hall erupted.
"Enough!" Arthur roared.
"Edward would never..."
"He hired men."
Adrian interrupted.
"They failed."
Victor closed his eyes.
"I knew you were going to say that."
"Because it's true."
Julian looked toward Victor.
"You knew?"
Victor answered quietly.
"I knew there were two versions of the story."
"I never knew which one was real."
Adrian walked to the center of the hall.
"No one asked why my plane was never found."
"No one asked why there was never a funeral."
"No one asked why every government report vanished."
He looked directly at Lady Margaret.
"Because someone made them disappear."
Lady Margaret's voice trembled.
"Edward cried every day after you vanished."
Adrian's eyes softened for only a heartbeat.
"He cried because he failed."
"Not because he regretted it."
Arthur could remain silent no longer.
"You're manipulating history."
"No."
Adrian replied.
"I'm correcting it."
The General Counsel carefully folded the document.
"There is only one way to determine whether this declaration is legally enforceable."
Arthur nodded reluctantly.
"The Founder Archive."
"The original succession register."
"It contains every amendment ever made."
Adrian smiled.
"I agree."
Elena looked toward Arthur.
"Where is it?"
Arthur answered without hesitation.
"Vault One."
Unlike Vault Seven...
Vault One had never been breached.
Its records had never left the estate.
If the register confirmed Adrian's document...
Everything would change.
If it disproved him...
His entire claim would collapse.
Arthur turned toward Sentinel.
"Escort everyone to Vault One."
The group had barely taken three steps...
When a metallic click echoed behind them.
Small.
Sharp.
Unmistakable.
The sound of a pistol being cocked.
Everyone froze.
Arthur slowly turned.
Standing near the rear of the group...
The General Counsel held a compact handgun.
Its barrel pointed directly at Arthur Bennett.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
The room went completely still.
Julian stared in disbelief.
"You?"
She had worked for the family for twenty-six years.
She had attended Elena's birthday parties.
She had drafted every major contract.
She was one of the most trusted advisers in the empire.
Arthur's voice was almost a whisper.
"Margaret..."
"You?"
She nodded once.
"I never wanted it to happen like this."
Adrian didn't look surprised.
Not even slightly.
Instead...
He sighed.
"I told you there would be another way."
She shook her head.
"There wasn't."
Sentinel operators swung their rifles toward her.
Instantly...
Adrian's men aimed back.
Dozens of weapons filled the hall.
One trigger pull...
And the Ashford family mansion would become a battlefield.
The General Counsel never lowered her pistol.
Instead, she looked directly at Elena.
"You think this started because of money."
"It didn't."
"It started because of a promise."
Julian frowned.
"What promise?"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"The promise your grandfather made..."
"...the night he destroyed an entire branch of his own family."
Before anyone could react...
She reached into her jacket with her free hand and pulled out a small black remote.
Arthur's eyes widened.
"No!"
She pressed the button.
Deep beneath the mansion...
Somewhere below Vault One...
A powerful explosion shook the entire estate.
The floor trembled violently.
Crystal chandeliers shattered.
Books crashed from shelves.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Security alarms screamed to life.
Arthur's face turned white.
"They've collapsed the archive..."
Lady Margaret whispered one sentence that chilled everyone in the room.
"If the succession register is gone..."
"...there may never be a way to prove who truly owns the empire."
