Chapter 12: The Tower of Forgotten Names

The Founders' Tower had been abandoned for seventeen years.

No employees.

No security.

No visitors.

A monument left behind after the first major expansion of the Ashford Empire.

Most people believed it was simply an old building waiting to be demolished.

They were wrong.

Because the Ashford family had never abandoned anything.

They only hid things.

The black sedan stopped beneath the tower at exactly midnight.

Elena sat silently in the back seat.

No security team.

No lawyers.

No board members.

Only her.

Exactly as Adrian demanded.

Arthur had protested.

"Going alone is a mistake."

Elena looked at him.

"Everyone who stood beside me today has hidden something."

Arthur had no answer.

Because she was right.

Julian stood outside the vehicle.

"You can't go in there."

Elena looked at him.

"Why do you care?"

The question hit harder than she intended.

Julian lowered his eyes.

Because after everything...

He didn't have a good answer.

Finally, he said:

"Because I know what it's like to realize too late that you destroyed the wrong person."

Silence.

Elena looked away.

"Stay here."

Then she entered the tower.

Inside...

The building smelled like dust and forgotten memories.

The marble floors were cracked.

Old company logos peeled from the walls.

The empire's first symbol.

Before the modern branding.

Before the billions.

Before Julian.

A symbol created by Edward Ashford himself.

At the center of the lobby was a bronze plaque.

THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO PROTECT THE PAST.

Elena stared at the words.

Her grandfather's favorite sentence.

But now...

She wondered how many truths he had buried beneath it.

The elevator still worked.

Impossible.

The buttons lit up one by one.

Floor 1.

Floor 2.

Floor 3.

Then...

A hidden button appeared.

No number.

Only a symbol.

The Ashford crest.

Elena pressed it.

The elevator descended.

Not upward.

Down.

When the doors opened...

She found herself inside a room larger than the tower lobby.

Archives.

Screens.

Documents.

Photographs.

A private command center.

Adrian stood near the window.

Looking over the city.

"You came."

Elena stepped out.

"You knew I would."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He turned.

"Because you're Edward's granddaughter."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Don't pretend you know me."

A small smile appeared.

"I knew you before you knew yourself."

On the table between them rested several files.

Old files.

Very old.

Adrian pointed.

"Your father told you I betrayed him."

"He showed me proof."

Adrian nodded.

"And I have proof he lied."

Elena didn't move.

"Everyone has proof."

"Everyone has a story."

"Everyone says they're protecting the family."

She stepped closer.

"So tell me the truth."

Adrian looked at the city.

"When I discovered Marcus Vale's plan..."

"I tried to expose him."

"But Marcus was already prepared."

"He had allies."

"People inside the company."

"People inside government."

"People inside the family."

Elena frowned.

"Then why disappear?"

Adrian's expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"Because your grandfather asked me to."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"Edward knew."

"He knew Marcus was dangerous."

"He knew I was being hunted."

"So he created the plane crash."

"He created my disappearance."

"To save me."

She shook her head.

"That makes no sense."

"It does when you understand Edward."

Adrian walked toward the table.

"He believed enemies couldn't kill a dead man."

Elena looked at the files.

"What are these?"

"The truth."

She opened the first one.

Financial transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Marcus Vale's signature.

Her eyes moved faster.

The second file.

Private agreements.

The third.

A list of names.

Politicians.

Executives.

Investors.

People connected to Atlas.

Then...

One name.

Elena stopped.

Her face changed.

"No."

Adrian watched her carefully.

"You know him."

She looked up.

"Impossible."

"Say his name."

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"Arthur Bennett."

The room went silent.

Adrian didn't smile.

He didn't celebrate.

Instead, he looked sad.

"That's why this is complicated."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"Arthur protected us."

"Arthur raised me."

"Arthur was the one person my grandfather trusted."

Adrian nodded.

"And that's exactly why Marcus needed him."

Outside the tower...

Julian watched the entrance.

Minutes passed.

Then an encrypted message appeared on his phone.

Unknown sender.

A video.

He opened it.

His face immediately changed.

Because the video showed Elena inside the tower.

Talking to Adrian.

But someone else was watching them.

A hidden camera.

And behind that camera...

A familiar face.

Julian zoomed in.

His blood ran cold.

The person monitoring Elena and Adrian...

Was not Marcus Vale.

Was not Arthur.

Was not Victor.

It was Richard Ashford.

Elena's father.

Alive.

Watching.

Inside the tower...

Elena continued reading.

"Why would Arthur help Marcus?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"Because he wasn't supposed to."

"What does that mean?"

"Arthur was blackmailed."

"By Marcus."

"Thirty years ago."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

"He's here."

Elena turned.

"Who?"

Before Adrian could answer...

A voice came through the speakers.

Warm.

Familiar.

Almost gentle.

"Hello, Elena."

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew that voice.

The voice she had heard every morning growing up.

The voice that told her bedtime stories.

The voice that taught her how to ride a bicycle.

Her father's voice.

Richard Ashford.

The speakers crackled.

"I hoped you would never find this place."

Elena stepped toward the microphone.

"Dad?"

Silence.

Then:

"I'm sorry."

Her eyes filled.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then Richard answered.

"Somewhere you cannot reach."

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

"You're lying."

Richard ignored him.

"Elena..."

"Everything I did..."

"I did to protect you."

She shook her head.

"Then why hide?"

No answer.

"Why let me believe you betrayed Adrian?"

Still silence.

Finally...

Richard spoke.

"Because the real person controlling this war..."

"...is not Adrian."

Elena looked at him.

"Then who?"

The answer came.

A name she never expected.

A name that made Adrian's expression change.

A name that even Victor feared.

Richard whispered:

"The founder."

Elena frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"No."

A pause.

"The first Ashford."

The lights went completely black.

A final message appeared on the main screen.

An old photograph.

A man Elena had never seen.

The original founder of the empire.

Beneath the photograph:

EDWARD ASHFORD WAS NOT THE BEGINNING.

HE WAS THE SECOND.

Elena stared.

The empire's history...

Everything she knew...

Had just been rewritten.

Because her family secret was older than anyone imagined.

Much older.
