Chapter 7: The Heir Who Never Died

Gunfire echoed across the abandoned shipping yard.

The Sentinel operators moved with practiced precision, advancing in pairs, covering angles, forcing the attackers to retreat behind stacks of rusted containers.

The team leader barked a single command.

"Package Alpha first!"

Two operators sprinted toward Julian.

One grabbed his shoulder.

"Move!"

Julian pulled away.

"Victor!"

The older man was still behind a concrete barrier, clutching the Black Ledger beneath his coat.

Three gunmen had pinned him down.

Without hesitation, the Sentinel leader raised his rifle.

Two controlled shots.

Both attackers dropped.

"Go!"

Victor emerged, breathing heavily.

For a brief moment, the three of them were only twenty feet from safety.

Then...

A single pistol shot rang out.

Victor staggered.

The Ledger slipped from beneath his coat and hit the concrete.

Blood spread across the left side of his jacket.

Julian caught him before he fell.

"You've been hit!"

Victor looked down.

"Shoulder..."

He forced a weak smile.

"Not my heart."

The Sentinel convoy roared away moments later.

Behind them, the warehouse burned.

By the time local police arrived, every attacker had vanished.

Every shell casing had been collected.

Every vehicle abandoned.

It looked less like a crime scene...

And more like a place someone had carefully erased.

Inside the lead SUV...

A medic pressed gauze against Victor's wound.

Julian sat opposite him, still trying to process everything that had happened.

The Black Ledger rested between them inside a locked titanium case.

Finally, Julian spoke.

"Who were those people?"

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the convoy window.

"I prayed you'd never meet them."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"No."

"It doesn't."

The SUV fell silent.

Only the hum of tires against asphalt remained.

Then Victor asked quietly,

"Have you ever heard the name... Adrian Ashford?"

Julian frowned.

"No."

Victor closed his eyes.

"Neither has anyone else."

The Family Estate

Arthur Bennett stood before a massive fireplace as Elena listened to the Sentinel briefing.

"Victor is alive."

She exhaled slowly.

"And Julian?"

"Unharmed."

Her father nodded once.

"Bring them here."

Arthur hesitated.

"There is... another matter."

"What?"

"The attackers."

He placed several photographs on the table.

Each showed a dead operative recovered from the scene.

No fingerprints.

No identification.

No dental records.

Nothing.

One detail connected all of them.

Tattooed beneath the left shoulder.

A black compass.

Elena's father's face darkened.

"I haven't seen that symbol in thirty years."

Elena looked up.

"What does it mean?"

He answered in little more than a whisper.

"They belonged to Atlas."

Back in the SUV

Julian watched Victor carefully.

"You asked about Adrian."

Victor nodded.

"He was Edward Ashford's eldest son."

Julian blinked.

"Eldest?"

"I thought Elena's father was the only child."

"So does almost everyone."

Victor stared through the windshield.

"That was intentional."

Thirty-four years earlier...

The Ashford Empire had faced its greatest crisis.

Competitors were buying politicians.

Organized crime wanted control of luxury ports.

Foreign investors demanded voting rights.

Edward Ashford had two sons.

Richard.

Brilliant.

Patient.

Trusted.

And Adrian.

Charismatic.

Fearless.

Dangerously ambitious.

"They were nothing alike," Victor said.

"But both believed they deserved the empire."

Julian listened in silence.

"The Family Council chose Richard."

"Elena's father."

"What happened to Adrian?"

Victor looked away.

"He disappeared."

Julian frowned.

"Disappeared?"

"The official story says his private plane crashed over the Pacific."

"And the truth?"

Victor's expression hardened.

"No wreckage was ever found."

The SUV became eerily quiet.

Julian felt a chill run down his spine.

"You think he survived."

Victor slowly nodded.

"I think he never boarded the plane."

Meanwhile...

Thousands of miles away...

A helicopter landed on the roof of a secluded estate hidden among snow-covered mountains.

The property appeared abandoned from satellite images.

It wasn't.

Inside...

A man stood before floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the valley.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Hands clasped behind his back.

He looked no older than sixty despite official records claiming he had died decades ago.

An assistant entered.

"The warehouse operation failed."

The man didn't turn around.

"I expected it would."

"The Ledger?"

"Still in Victor's possession."

Silence.

"What are your orders?"

Only then did the man smile.

"Phase Three."

The assistant lowered his head.

"And Elena?"

The man's reflection appeared in the glass.

Sharp blue eyes.

The same unmistakable eyes seen in old portraits of the Ashford family.

"Bring my niece to me."

At the Family Estate

The Sentinel convoy passed through the estate gates just before sunset.

Julian stepped out first.

The mansion looked different now.

Not luxurious.

Fortified.

Hidden cameras.

Security teams.

Bullet-resistant windows.

This wasn't merely a home.

It was a command center.

Elena stood waiting at the entrance.

For several seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

So much had changed in less than twenty-four hours.

Finally, Julian broke the silence.

"Were you ever going to tell me?"

Elena answered honestly.

"Yes."

"When?"

"The day the Family Council approved it."

"They never did."

"No."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"So I was just another project?"

Her eyes flashed with hurt.

"If you truly believe that..."

"...then you never knew me at all."

She turned toward Victor.

"Can you walk?"

"Barely."

Arthur stepped forward.

"The Council is assembled."

Victor stopped.

His face suddenly pale.

"No."

Arthur frowned.

"What?"

Victor looked directly at Elena.

"If the Council is here..."

"...lock every door."

Arthur's expression changed instantly.

"Why?"

Victor whispered three words that froze everyone in place.

"He's already inside."

Every Sentinel operator reached for their weapons.

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward the grand staircase.

His voice barely audible.

"Adrian."

At that exact moment...

A slow clap echoed through the entrance hall.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everyone turned.

An elderly gentleman in an immaculate charcoal suit stepped out from the shadows at the top of the staircase.

No one had seen him enter.

No alarms had sounded.

He smiled warmly.

Almost kindly.

"Good evening..."

His gaze settled on Elena.

"...my dear niece."

Arthur Bennett's face drained of color.

Lady Margaret, standing at the far end of the hall, dropped her cane.

It clattered across the marble floor.

A name escaped her lips.

One she had not spoken in over three decades.

"Adrian..."

The man inclined his head politely.

"I've been away far too long."

Behind him...

More than a dozen armed figures emerged from the darkness of the upper corridor.

The Ashford Family Estate...

The most secure residence in the empire...

Had already been infiltrated.
