Chapter 6: No Witnesses

The rifle settled against the edge of the broken warehouse window.
The shooter slowed his breathing.
Crosshairs drifted across Victor Kane's chest.
A calm voice crackled through the earpiece.
"Confirm visual."
"Confirmed."
"The Ledger?"
"On the table."
"Priority?"
The sniper hesitated.
"The book?"
The answer came without emotion.
"No. Eliminate every witness."
His finger tightened around the trigger.
Inside the warehouse, Julian had no idea death was only a sheet of cracked glass away.
His eyes never left the Black Ledger.
"I've spent nine years living a lie," he said.
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"You spent nine years believing a convenient version of the truth."
Julian's jaw clenched.
"Stop talking in riddles."
Victor slowly opened the ancient book.
Yellowed pages crackled beneath his fingers.
"This empire wasn't built by businessmen."
Julian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It was built by people willing to disappear."
BOOM!
The warehouse exploded with the deafening crack of breaking glass.
Victor's eyes widened.
"DOWN!"
He shoved Julian sideways.
A suppressed round sliced through the chair where Julian had been sitting a fraction of a second earlier.
Wood exploded into splinters.
Julian crashed onto the concrete floor.
"What the...!"
Another shot.
The overhead light shattered.
Darkness swallowed half the room.
Victor grabbed the Ledger.
"They found us."
"Who?"
"The people who should have stayed buried."
Outside, the sniper cursed.
"Missed."
The voice on the radio remained calm.
"Proceed inside."
A black van rolled silently to the warehouse entrance.
Four masked figures stepped out.
No insignias.
No tattoos.
Professional.
Each carried suppressed carbines.
This wasn't a robbery.
It was an execution.
Victor pulled Julian toward a rusted steel door.
"Move!"
Julian stumbled after him.
"You knew this would happen?"
"I hoped I was wrong."
They reached a narrow staircase leading into the basement.
Victor slammed the door shut.
Heavy footsteps echoed above them.
The killers were already inside.
Julian's heartbeat thundered.
"What is going on?"
Victor looked directly at him.
"Someone has been cleaning up loose ends for thirty years."
Above them...
The team leader scanned the warehouse.
"No bodies."
"They're below."
He nodded toward the basement door.
"Finish it."
One man pulled a small cylindrical device from his vest.
Not a grenade.
A shaped explosive.
Enough to blow open reinforced steel.
Miles away...
At the Ashford Family Estate...
Arthur Bennett's secure phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Arthur."
The voice on the other end spoke only four words.
"Warehouse attack in progress."
Arthur stood so abruptly that his chair toppled backward.
"What?"
"We intercepted encrypted radio traffic."
"They're attempting to eliminate Victor Kane."
Arthur's expression changed instantly.
"And Julian?"
"Also inside."
Elena looked up from the documents she had been reading.
"What happened?"
Arthur didn't hesitate.
"Someone is trying to kill them."
The room fell silent.
Her father immediately reached for another phone.
"Activate Sentinel."
Arthur nodded.
"I already have."
Sentinel.
A name Julian had never heard.
A program so secret that fewer than a dozen people even knew it existed.
Officially...
The Ashford family employed private security.
Unofficially...
Sentinel wasn't security.
It was a rapid-response unit created after an attempted kidnapping decades earlier.
Former intelligence officers.
Former military operators.
People whose names never appeared on payroll records.
Within ninety seconds, four black SUVs were already racing toward the warehouse.
Back underground...
Victor opened an old maintenance tunnel.
"We're going this way."
Julian stared.
"How do you know this place?"
"I bought it."
"You what?"
"Twenty-three years ago."
Before Julian could ask another question...
BOOM!
The basement door exploded inward.
Concrete dust filled the air.
The assassins were through.
Victor cursed.
"They're faster than I expected."
The tunnel stretched into darkness.
Old pipes lined the ceiling.
Water dripped steadily.
Julian struggled to keep up.
"You still haven't answered me."
"Answered what?"
"Why Elena hid everything."
Victor stopped walking.
For the first time...
His expression softened.
"Because she loved you."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"That's hard to believe."
Victor looked almost angry.
"She argued with her grandfather for months."
"She wanted to tell you."
Julian blinked.
"What?"
"The Family Council refused."
"They believed revealing the truth would attract enemies."
"So she lied."
"No."
"She sacrificed."
Julian's pace slowed.
Every memory replayed differently.
Every late night.
Every canceled vacation.
Every business trip Elena insisted on handling herself.
He had called her controlling.
Demanding.
Obsessed with work.
What if...
She had been protecting him?
"No..."
He whispered.
Victor nodded sadly.
"That's the part she never wanted you to know."
Gunfire erupted behind them.
The assassins had entered the tunnel.
One bullet ricocheted off the wall inches from Julian's head.
Victor shoved him forward.
"Run!"
At the tunnel's far end stood an old iron hatch.
Victor forced it open.
Fresh air rushed inside.
They emerged behind an abandoned shipping yard.
For one brief second...
Silence.
Then engines roared.
Four motorcycles blocked the exit.
More armed men.
Julian stared in disbelief.
"They were waiting here too."
Victor smiled grimly.
"Professional containment."
The lead rider removed his helmet.
He wasn't masked.
He looked almost ordinary.
Mid-forties.
Clean-shaven.
Cold gray eyes.
He studied Victor carefully.
"You should've stayed retired."
Victor recognized him immediately.
"So..."
"They finally promoted you."
The man smiled.
"You remember me."
"I remember every mistake I ever made."
The stranger glanced toward Julian.
"So that's him."
Julian frowned.
"You know me?"
The man ignored the question.
Instead, he spoke into a microphone clipped beneath his collar.
"Visual confirmation."
"Both targets located."
"Proceed?"
The reply came instantly.
"Negative."
Everyone froze.
Even the gunmen.
Another voice replaced the first.
Older.
Calmer.
Almost amused.
"Bring Julian alive."
Victor's face drained of color.
"No..."
Julian looked at him.
"What?"
Victor whispered,
"They don't care about you."
Julian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Victor looked toward the motorcycles.
"They've already decided..."
"...you're the perfect replacement."
Before Julian could understand...
The roar of engines echoed from the opposite end of the shipping yard.
Black SUVs burst through the rusted gates.
Brakes screamed.
Doors flew open.
Men in dark tactical gear spread across the yard with military precision.
No logos.
No shouting.
Only hand signals.
The leader raised a rifle.
"Sentinel!"
Every operative opened fire simultaneously.
The shipping yard erupted into chaos.
Bullets shattered containers.
Motorcycles crashed.
Assassins scattered.
Julian threw himself behind a concrete barrier.
He looked toward the leader of the rescue team.
The man lowered his rifle just long enough for Julian to see a silver crest on his sleeve.
An Ashford crest.
The team wasn't protecting the empire.
They were protecting the family.
And suddenly Julian realized something that shook him more than the gunfire.
For nine years...
Elena had lived surrounded by enemies he never even knew existed.
