Chapter 9 - MARGARET'S SECRETI drove to Margaret's house alone.

Julia wanted to come.
I refused.
This was personal.
Margaret opened the door.
No makeup.
No smile.
She looked exhausted.
âCome in.â
I stepped inside.
âWhy did you call me?â
She closed the door.
âBecause I'm afraid.â
I stared.
âOf Ryan?â
She nodded.
âThat changes everything.â
Margaret sat down.
âI thought I was helping my son.â
âYou hired Vanessa.â
âYes.â
âYou helped forge medical documents.â
She looked down.
âYes.â
âYou tried to take my children.â
âI thought I was protecting them.â
I laughed bitterly.
âFrom me?â
âFrom Ryan.â
Silence.
I stared.
âWhat?â
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
âRyan has been dangerous for a long time.â
âThen why help him?â
âBecause he threatened Daniel.â
I sat.
âWhat happened?â
âYears ago, Ryan took control of the family business.â
Margaret twisted her hands.
âHe made Daniel sign documents.â
âWhat documents?â
âDebt guarantees.â
âAnd then?â
âDaniel couldn't pay.â
I understood.
âRyan owns him.â
She nodded.
âYour husband has spent years controlling everyone around him.â
âThen why did you let him marry me?â
âI didn't know what he'd become.â
I didn't believe her.
âYou knew enough.â
Margaret looked at me.
âYou were pregnant when everything changed.â
âWhat changed?â
âRyan discovered you had inherited money from your grandfather.â
I froze.
âMy inheritance?â
âYes.â
âHow much?â
She named a number.
My blood went cold.
I had never told Ryan the exact amount.
He had always assumed it was smaller.
Margaret whispered:
âRyan found the documents.â
âHow?â
âHe hired someone to investigate you.â
I stared.
âWhat else did he find?â
Margaret hesitated.
âYour grandfather put conditions on the inheritance.â
I remembered.
I had forgotten.
The inheritance was protected.
It couldn't be accessed by my spouse.
But it could become vulnerable under certain circumstances.
I whispered:
âDivorce?â
She nodded.
âNot exactly.â
âWhat then?â
âCustody.â
I stared at her.
Margaret continued.
âIf Ryan gets primary custody of your children, control of certain family-linked assets can change.â
My stomach tightened.
âSo that's why.â
âYes.â
âThe affair.â
âYes.
âThe false mental illness.â
âYes.
âThe pregnancy trust.â
âYes.â
âEverything.â
Margaret nodded.
âIt was never about Vanessa.â
I stood.
âThen why did you tell me to leave?â
âBecause Ryan has started planning something I cannot stop.â
âWhat?â
Margaret's face turned pale.
âHe intends to have you declared medically incompetent.â
âHow?â
âAfter the delivery.â
I froze.
âWhat happens after the delivery?â
âHe'll claim you suffered postpartum psychosis.â
My blood ran cold.
âAnd if that doesn't work?â
Margaret looked away.
âHe has another plan.â
âTell me.â
Silence.
âTell me!â
She whispered:
âHe wants your baby removed from your custody immediately.â
I covered my mouth.
âWhy?â
âBecause the baby gives him access to the inheritance.â
I was barely breathing.
Margaret stood.
âClaire, you need to disappear.â
âNo.â
âYou don't understand.â
âI understand perfectly.â
I turned to leave.
Then she grabbed my wrist.
âOne more thing.â
I looked back.
She whispered:
âVanessa isn't the woman you think she is.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âShe has done this before.â
I froze.
âWhat?â
âThere was another family.â
Margaret's voice shook.
âAnother woman.â
âWhere is she?â
âShe disappeared.â
I stared.
âIs she dead?â
Margaret didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I walked out.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Nathan.
I FOUND HER.
I stopped.
Another message appeared.
THE WOMAN WHO VANISHED.
Then an address.
I stared at it.
The address was five minutes from Margaret's house.
I got in my car.
And drove.
When I reached the house, the door opened before I knocked.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Thin.
Terrified.
She looked at my belly.
Then at my face.
And whispered:
âYou're Claire.â
âHow do you know?â
She stepped aside.
âBecause Vanessa showed me your photograph.â
I entered.
The woman locked the door.
Then she said:
âShe did this to me too.â
I swallowed.
âWhat happened?â
The woman looked directly into my eyes.
âShe killed my marriage.â
A pause.
âShe stole my children.â
Then she lowered her voice.
âAnd when I fought backâŠâ
May you like
Her eyes filled with tears.
âShe tried to kill me.â
