Chapter 2 - THE SECOND ACCOUNTI didn't sleep.

At 4:17 a.m., I was still sitting at the kitchen table with the recorder in front of me.

I had replayed the conversation eleven times.

Same words.

Same voices.

Same conclusion.

There was a second account.

And Ryan needed my signature.

I opened the laptop.

Our joint bank account looked normal.

Mortgage.

Utilities.

School expenses.

Groceries.

Nothing suspicious.

Then I checked the investment account.

Normal.

Retirement savings.

Normal.

Life insurance.

Normal.

But there was one account I couldn't access.

A business account.

The login had changed.

I knew because I had originally helped Ryan set it up.

I tried the old password.

Denied.

I tried another.

Denied.

Then I noticed something.

The recovery email wasn't mine anymore.

It was Vanessa's.

My stomach tightened.

At 6:10, I heard footsteps.

Ryan entered the kitchen.

He looked perfectly rested.

He poured coffee.

“Morning.”

I stared at him.

“Sleep well?”

He shrugged.

“Eventually.”

He sat opposite me.

“We need to talk.”

“About Vanessa?”

“About us.”

I said nothing.

He leaned forward.

“I don't want this to become ugly.”

I almost laughed.

“You moved your mistress into my house.”

“She isn't a mistress.”

“What should I call her?”

“My partner.”

I nodded.

“Fine.”

He studied me.

“I want an amicable separation.”

“Of course you do.”

“No lawyers. No fighting.”

“No lawyers?”

“It'll save us both money.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“And you already prepared the paperwork?”

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

“Yes.”

“I'd like to see it.”

“Later.”

“Why later?”

“Because you're emotional right now.”

I smiled.

“You're right.”

His shoulders relaxed.

Then I asked quietly:

“What is the second account?”

His face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

“What second account?”

“I heard you talking about it.”

His jaw tightened.

“You're recording me now?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

He stood.

“Claire.”

I remained seated.

“You should be careful.”

“Why?”

“You're turning this into something it doesn't need to be.”

“No.”

I looked up at him.

“You already did that.”

He slammed his hand against the table.

“You don't understand what's happening!”

“Then explain it.”

He stared at me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Vanessa entered the kitchen.

She was wearing a silk robe.

My silk robe.

The one my sister had given me for Christmas.

She walked straight past me.

“Ryan, we need to talk.”

I looked at her.

“You're wearing my clothes.”

She smiled.

“I didn't realize you'd mind.”

“I do.”

She turned to Ryan.

“Could you handle this?”

Handle this.

As if I were furniture.

Ryan moved between us.

“Claire, please.”

I stood.

“You know what's funny?”

“What?”

“You both think I've been blindsided.”

I picked up my handbag.

“I haven't.”

Then I walked out.

My destination was the bank.

By 8:00 a.m., I was sitting across from our private banking manager.

She looked at the documents I had brought.

“Mrs. Miller, there is something you should know.”

I leaned forward.

“What?”

“There was an attempted transfer last week.”

My heart skipped.

“How much?”

She lowered her voice.

“Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

I stared at her.

“Transferred where?”

“An offshore trust.”

“Who authorized it?”

She looked uncomfortable.

“Your husband.”

“Did it go through?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your signature was required.”

I suddenly understood.

The second account wasn't just hidden.

They were trying to move our money.

The banker slid a document toward me.

“There's more.”

“What?”

She pointed to a line near the bottom.

“Your husband listed this as a marital asset.”

I frowned.

“That's our unborn child's life insurance.”

I went still.

I hadn't even bought a policy yet.

Someone else had.

In the baby's name.

I looked at her.

“When was this created?”

“Three months ago.”

Three months.

Long before Vanessa entered our house.

Long before Ryan admitted anything.

I stood.

“I need copies of everything.”

“Of course.”

As I walked out of the bank, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice whispered:

“Don't sign anything.”

I stopped.

“Who is this?”

“You don't know me.”

“Then how do you know about this?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Ryan isn't leaving you for Vanessa.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

The man continued.

“Vanessa is part of the plan.”

“What plan?”

Silence.

Then one final sentence.

“They're trying to take your children.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My hands were shaking.

Someone knew.

Someone was watching.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the affair had ever been about love at all.

Maybe Vanessa hadn't come into my house to steal my husband.

May you like

Maybe she had come into my house to help him steal something much more valuable.

My children.
