Chapter 13 - THE RINGJulia examined the ring under a magnifying glass.

“It's heavier than it should be.”

I stared.

“Can you open it?”

“Not without damaging it.”

“Do it.”

She carefully removed the inner lining.

A tiny compartment appeared.

Inside was a micro-SD card.

I almost laughed.

My grandfather had hidden evidence inside my wedding ring.

The irony was almost cruel.

We copied the data.

There were recordings.

Photographs.

Documents.

Everything.

Richard wasn't just laundering money.

He had been manipulating custody cases for wealthy clients.

Creating fake affairs.

Forging medical records.

Planting evidence.

Breaking marriages.

Then controlling the assets afterward.

Ryan had learned from him.

Vanessa had been one of his operatives.

Margaret had helped.

Daniel had helped.

And my father had tried to expose them.

There was one final file.

I opened it.

My grandfather's face appeared on the screen.

His voice was weak.

“If you are watching this, Claire, they have already begun.”

I covered my mouth.

“I knew they would come for you.”

He explained everything.

The inheritance was protected evidence.

The money was merely bait.

The real asset was a chain of documents proving the Miller family's crimes.

My grandfather had hidden copies in several places.

The ring held the master key.

He named every person involved.

Richard.

Ryan.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

And one name I hadn't expected.

My own mother.

I stared.

“No.”

Julia froze.

“Claire
”

My mother had signed a document.

A settlement agreement.

It stated that she would remain silent in exchange for my safety.

But if the family discovered she had betrayed them, she would be next.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From my mother.

COME ALONE.

An address followed.

A hotel.

I wanted to ignore it.

But I couldn't.

I went.

The hotel room was empty.

Then the television turned on.

My mother's face appeared.

A recording.

“Claire, forgive me.”

I stepped closer.

“Your father is alive.”

I already knew.

“He has the evidence.”

I waited.

“But Richard has him.”

My heart dropped.

A second recording started.

My father was tied to a chair.

Richard stood behind him.

Then Richard looked into the camera.

“Claire.”

His voice was calm.

“Bring me the ring.”

My blood froze.

“Come to the old courthouse at midnight.”

“You come alone.”

“Bring no police.”

“Bring no lawyer.”

“And bring the children.”

I stared.

Then the screen went black.

Julia grabbed my arm.

“You're not going.”

“I have to.”

“No.”

“He has my father.”

“And he wants you dead.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

She stared at me.

Then said:

“Then we stop playing defense.”

I called the police.

We assembled a team.

Cameras.

Tracking devices.

Backup officers.

Everything.

At 11:55 p.m., I entered the courthouse.

Alone.

The halls were dark.

My footsteps echoed.

Then I saw him.

Richard.

Older than the photographs.

But very much alive.

He smiled.

“You look like your mother.”

I stopped.

“Where's my father?”

“In the basement.”

“Let him go.”

“Give me the ring.”

I removed it.

Held it up.

Richard stepped forward.

Then I heard another voice.

“Don't.”

I turned.

Ryan.

He stood behind me.

Holding a gun.

My husband's hand shook.

“Ryan?”

He looked at me.

His eyes were red.

“I never wanted this.”

Richard laughed.

“You always wanted this.”

Ryan lowered the gun.

“I changed my mind.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Then you die with them.”

A gunshot exploded through the courthouse.

The lights went out.

I screamed.

When they came back on, Ryan was on the floor.

May you like

Blood spread across his shirt.

And Richard was gone.
