Chapter 12 - VANESSA'S REAL MISSIONNathan came to the apartment that night.

He looked like a man carrying a secret too heavy for his bones.
âTell me everything.â
He sat down.
âVanessa and I grew up in the Miller family's orbit.â
âWhy?â
âOur father worked for Richard.â
âWhat kind of work?â
Nathan looked down.
âDirty work.â
My stomach tightened.
âVanessa learned early that Richard never forgave betrayal.â
âAnd you?â
âI tried to leave.â
âBut Vanessa stayed.â
âShe didn't have a choice.â
âEveryone has a choice.â
Nathan looked at me.
âNot when the person controlling your family threatens to destroy everyone you love.â
I said nothing.
He continued.
âRichard recruited Vanessa.â
âTo seduce Ryan?â
âNo.â
âTo control him.â
I frowned.
âRyan was already ambitious.â
âRichard knew that.â
âSo what did Vanessa do?â
âShe made Ryan believe she loved him.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Richard needed Ryan emotionally dependent.â
It was almost impossible to understand.
But then Nathan showed me something.
A recording.
Richard's voice.
âOnce Ryan divorces Claire, the children become leverage.â
Vanessa asked:
âAnd the inheritance?â
âHandled.â
âAnd the baby?â
A pause.
Richard said:
âNot if the baby carries the wrong blood.â
I looked at Nathan.
âThe DNA switch.â
He nodded.
âYou were involved.â
âI was the donor.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I thought I was helping Vanessa expose Richard.â
I stared.
âYou deliberately fathered my child?â
âNo.â
His voice broke.
âI didn't know whose embryo it was.â
I felt sick.
âWhat?â
âThe clinic had two cases.â
He explained.
Ryan had arranged artificial insemination.
Vanessa had manipulated the clinic records.
Nathan's sample was substituted.
The purpose was to create a biological connection between me and the Cole family.
I struggled to understand.
âWhy?â
âBecause Richard wanted to use your child as evidence of infidelity.â
I looked at him.
âWhat evidence?â
âA paternity test.â
My blood froze.
âIf they revealed Nathan as the father, they could make you look unfaithful.â
âAnd Ryan would get custody.â
âYes.â
âEven though the clinic created the situation?â
âExactly.â
The plan was monstrous.
But there was one flaw.
The original records.
If we could prove the embryo transfer was manipulated, everything collapsed.
I looked at Nathan.
âWhere are the originals?â
He smiled sadly.
âRichard destroyed them.â
âThen we have nothing.â
He shook his head.
âNot quite.â
He pulled a small memory card from his pocket.
âYour grandfather found this before he died.â
I stared.
âWhat is it?â
âEverything Richard did.â
We watched the files.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Officials.
Bribes.
False medical reports.
Murder investigations.
And finally:
Richard discussing my grandfather.
âHe has to disappear.â
I covered my mouth.
âHe killed my grandfather.â
Nathan nodded.
âProbably.â
Then another file opened.
Richard's voice:
âClaire doesn't know the inheritance is evidence.â
I leaned forward.
âWhat evidence?â
A second voice answered.
My father's.
I froze.
My father.
Alive.
I stared at Nathan.
âMy father is in this?â
âYes.â
âWhere?â
He pointed at the screen.
âListen.â
My father's voice cracked.
âRichard, leave my daughter alone.â
Richard replied:
âYou should have agreed.â
Then a sound.
A gunshot.
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
âMy fatherâŠâ
Nathan shook his head.
âHe survived.â
âHow?â
âHe disappeared.â
I stared at him.
âWhere is he?â
Nathan looked toward the window.
âThat's the problem.â
âWhat?â
âHe's been trying to reach you.â
âWhen?â
âTonight.â
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice whispered:
âClaire.â
I stopped breathing.
âDad?â
âYes.â
Tears filled my eyes.
âWhere are you?â
âI can't tell you.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Richard knows where I am.â
âAre you safe?â
âNo.â
Silence.
Then he said:
âClaire, listen carefully.â
I held the phone tighter.
âYour grandfather didn't leave you money.â
âHe left you evidence.â
âWhere?â
âHe hid it inside your wedding.â
I frowned.
âWhat?â
âThe ring.â
I looked down at my wedding ring.
Dad whispered:
âYour ring isn't jewelry.â
Then the line went dead.
I stared at the ring.
May you like
For years, I had thought it represented my marriage.
Now I realized it might contain the reason my marriage had been destroyed.
