Chapter 7 - THE TRAPWe didn't move.

Ryan knocked again.

“Claire, I know you're inside.”

Julia leaned toward me.

“Stay quiet.”

The door handle turned.

Locked.

Ryan exhaled.

“You're making this harder than it needs to be.”

I heard another voice.

Vanessa.

“Maybe she's finally realizing what she's done.”

My hands tightened.

Julia mouthed:

Camera.

She pointed upward.

Security camera.

If Ryan had forced his way in, there would be evidence.

Then the lights returned.

The hallway went silent.

We waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Finally, Julia opened the door.

The corridor was empty.

But on the floor lay an envelope.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Sophie and Ethan asleep in the apartment.

Taken that afternoon.

I felt my blood turn to ice.

“How?”

Julia grabbed my arm.

“We're leaving.”

The photograph had been taken from outside the building.

Someone had followed us.

We returned to the apartment.

The children were still asleep.

But the front door was unlocked.

I knew I had locked it.

I checked every room.

Nothing missing.

Except one thing.

The folder containing my original marriage documents.

Gone.

I looked at Julia.

“They've been inside.”

She nodded.

“What would they need those for?”

“I don't know.”

The next morning, the answer arrived.

A process server appeared at the apartment.

He handed me an envelope.

“Mrs. Miller, you have been served.”

My hands shook.

Divorce petition.

Emergency custody motion.

And an emergency mental health petition.

I looked at the filing.

The allegations were brutal.

I was unstable.

Aggressive.

Dangerous.

Obsessed with my husband's private life.

Unable to care for my children.

One sentence claimed:

Mrs. Miller has recently exhibited paranoid delusions involving an alleged affair.

I almost laughed.

The affair existed.

They knew it.

And yet they were using my reaction to it as proof of insanity.

Julia read the rest.

Then froze.

“What?”

She pointed.

“Look at the witness list.”

I scanned the names.

Margaret.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

And my own doctor.

Dr. Patel.

My heart dropped.

“He wouldn't do this.”

Julia looked at me.

“Maybe he already did.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“I trust him.”

“Don't.”

She looked toward the children.

“Trust is exactly what Ryan has weaponized.”

Then my phone rang.

It was Dr. Patel.

I answered.

“Doctor?”

“I need to meet you.”

“Why?”

“I made a mistake.”

“What kind?”

Silence.

Then:

“I signed something I shouldn't have.”

My stomach twisted.

“Why?”

“He told me it was for insurance.”

“And?”

“It wasn't.”

I sat down.

“What did you sign?”

“A statement saying you had experienced severe prenatal anxiety and had become emotionally unstable.”

My chest tightened.

“That's a lie.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“He threatened me.”

“With what?”

Another pause.

“My daughter.”

I closed my eyes.

Ryan wasn't just manipulating people.

He was controlling them.

Everywhere I looked, another person had a reason to betray me.

Then Dr. Patel said:

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Your husband requested information about your delivery.”

My blood froze.

“What information?”

“He asked whether the hospital could restrict access to the newborn.”

I stared at Julia.

The room suddenly felt too small.

“Why would he do that?”

Dr. Patel's voice dropped.

“He asked whether you could be sedated after delivery.”

I couldn't breathe.

Julia took the phone from my hand.

“Doctor, keep every document.”

She ended the call.

I stared at her.

“They're planning something for the birth.”

She nodded.

“We need to protect you and the baby.”

Then there was a knock.

Three slow knocks.

We looked at each other.

Another three.

Then a voice came through the door.

“Claire.”

Ryan.

He said softly:

“I know you're pregnant.”

A pause.

“And I know exactly when you're due.”

I stood frozen.

May you like

Then he said the sentence that made every hair on my arms rise.

“Because I've already reserved the hospital room.”
