Chapter 9 - The Man Victor Tried to EraseThe family chapel doors slammed shut.

Valentina pushed Ellie and Sofia behind the altar.

Marcus moved toward the tunnel.

Victor drew a concealed pistol.

Valentina stared at him.

"You have a gun?"

Victor's voice was flat.

"In this family, everyone carries something."

Marcus whispered:

"Not everyone."

He pointed toward the hidden passage.

"The attackers are from the private security company."

Victor frowned.

"My security company."

"Not anymore."

A voice echoed down the stairs.

"Victor!"

Victor's face changed.

A man stepped into view.

Gray coat.

Blood on his collar.

Older.

Tired.

But very much alive.

Valentina knew him from old family photographs.

Her father's former business partner.

Gabriel Moretti.

She had been told Gabriel died fifteen years ago.

Victor raised his gun.

Gabriel smiled.

"You still lie to your daughter."

Valentina stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"The man who tried to tell your father what your family really was."

Victor fired.

Gabriel ducked.

Chaos exploded.

Marcus tackled Victor's arm.

Clara screamed.

Sofia pulled Ellie down.

Valentina dragged them toward the side door.

"Move!"

They escaped into the garden.

Rain poured down.

Behind them came shouting.

Valentina ran with Ellie while Sofia followed.

They reached the old boathouse.

Marcus slammed the door.

"We'll be safe here."

Valentina turned on him.

"Start talking."

Marcus breathed heavily.

"About what?"

"Everything."

He nodded.

"Victor's group has been laundering money through the family trust."

Sofia stared.

"What does that have to do with us?"

"The trust is only the front."

Marcus opened his phone.

"It's a transfer mechanism."

"For what?"

"People."

Valentina froze.

"People?"

Marcus nodded.

"Your grandfather's old network trafficked identities."

Sofia looked sick.

"What?"

"They moved people under false names."

"Why?"

"Some were witnesses. Some were criminals. Some were children."

Valentina grabbed the phone.

Photos filled the screen.

Children.

Documents.

Fake identities.

Hospital transfers.

Adoption records.

She felt nauseated.

Then she saw one folder.

SOFIA.

Inside were payment records.

There was one line that made her stop.

A transfer to a woman named Eleanor Bell.

Sofia's adoptive mother.

Sofia whispered:

"She was paid to take me."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Sofia's face crumpled.

"She didn't love me."

Marcus shook his head.

"She did. The payment was made later."

"What?"

"She agreed to protect you."

Valentina looked at him.

"From Victor?"

"From everyone."

Gabriel suddenly appeared at the boathouse doorway.

Valentina raised the gun Victor had dropped.

"Don't move."

Gabriel stopped.

"I'm not your enemy."

"How do I know?"

He looked at Sofia.

"Because I spent twenty years trying to find her before Victor could."

Sofia stepped forward.

"Why?"

Gabriel reached into his coat.

He produced a small metal key.

"This opens your grandfather's final vault."

Valentina lowered the gun slightly.

"What is inside?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"The proof that your father ordered the hospital switch."

Valentina's breath caught.

"You said my father."

Gabriel nodded.

"Victor took the blame because your father was already dying."

Valentina stared.

"My father is dead."

"I know."

"Then why keep the evidence?"

Gabriel gave a tired smile.

"Because I thought one day you would come home."

A loud crash came from outside.

Marcus looked through the window.

Cars were surrounding the boathouse.

He turned pale.

"They found us."

Gabriel said quietly:

"Then we have less than ten minutes."

Valentina held the key.

"Where is the vault?"

Gabriel pointed toward the mansion.

"Under your childhood bedroom."

Valentina stared through the rain.

The place where she had slept as a girl.

The place where she had once believed her family loved her.

Now she knew a secret vault was hidden beneath the floor.

And somewhere inside it was the truth about her birth.

May you like

Her daughters.

And the family she thought she knew.
