Chapter 3 - The Door That Should Have Been LockedValentina grabbed Ellie and stepped backward.

The doorknob stopped moving.

Silence.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

"Valentina."

Victor.

Valentina looked at the door.

"Go away."

"Your daughter belongs in the family wing."

"She's staying here."

"Open the door."

"No."

Ellie buried her face against Valentina.

Valentina quietly locked the second latch.

"Mommy," Ellie whispered, "don't open."

"I won't."

The house went silent again.

Then Victor's voice changed.

"You think those videos tell the whole story?"

Valentina stared at the door.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you don't know your own daughter."

Valentina's jaw clenched.

"Leave."

A few seconds passed.

Then footsteps moved away.

Valentina waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

She opened the hidden panel behind the wardrobe.

It led into a narrow service corridor built decades earlier.

She had discovered it as a child.

Nobody knew she remembered.

She carried Ellie through it.

They emerged in the library.

Valentina immediately called her banker again.

"Tell me about the trust."

"It was established eleven months ago."

"Under whose authority?"

"Victor Caruso."

"What's inside it?"

"Several assets."

"How much?"

The banker hesitated.

"Approximately eighty-four million dollars."

Valentina went still.

"For Ellie?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Who controls it?"

"Your father."

Valentina's eyes sharpened.

"Can he withdraw money?"

"Not directly."

"Then why create it?"

The banker said:

"There's another clause."

"What clause?"

"At the child's eighteenth birthday, control transfers to her."

Valentina felt something click.

Ellie had not merely seen something.

She was connected to something.

Something valuable.

Something worth tens of millions.

Maybe more.

Valentina ended the call.

She looked at Ellie.

The child was exhausted.

"Mommy?"

"I'm listening."

"Can we go home?"

Valentina's heart broke.

"This is home."

Ellie shook her head.

"No."

"What do you mean?"

"This house isn't safe."

Valentina stared at her.

"Who told you that?"

Ellie whispered:

"Nobody."

Before Valentina could ask more, the library door opened.

Marcus walked in.

He looked pale.

Valentina stood.

"Where is Victor?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Meeting."

"With who?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

Marcus stared at the floor.

Valentina walked toward him.

"Why did you film Ellie?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I didn't want to."

"But you did."

"I had to."

Valentina grabbed his collar.

"You had to?"

Marcus's voice cracked.

"He threatened me."

"With what?"

Marcus said nothing.

"With what, Marcus?"

"He had evidence."

"Of what?"

Marcus looked up.

"Me."

Valentina released him.

"Doing what?"

"Nothing criminal."

She stared at him.

Marcus swallowed.

"At least, not at first."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny memory card.

"I copied some files."

Valentina took it.

"Why?"

"Because I knew one day someone would come home early."

Valentina's eyes narrowed.

"Someone like me?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Someone who still cared."

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

Valentina inserted the card into her laptop.

A folder opened.

VIDEO.

DOCUMENTS.

PAYMENTS.

One file was labeled:

ELLIE_URGENT.

Valentina clicked.

The video showed the estate dining room.

Victor was speaking with a man Valentina had never seen before.

"Once the girl turns eighteen, she gets everything."

The stranger asked:

"And if she remembers?"

Victor replied:

"She won't."

The man looked concerned.

"Children remember."

Victor smiled.

"Not when everyone around them tells them they imagined it."

Valentina felt sick.

Then the stranger asked:

"And the mother?"

Victor's face hardened.

"If Valentina interferes, she loses custody."

Valentina stopped breathing.

The stranger asked:

"How?"

Victor answered:

"We already started building the case."

Valentina stared at the screen.

Building a case.

Against her.

She looked at Marcus.

"You knew."

Marcus nodded.

"How long?"

"Eight months."

Valentina took one step toward him.

"You let them build a case to take my child."

"I was trying to survive."

"And Ellie?"

Marcus looked away.

"She wasn't supposed to become part of it."

Valentina's voice dropped.

"Who was that man?"

Marcus didn't answer.

"Who was he?"

Marcus finally whispered:

"Your father's attorney."

Valentina looked back at the screen.

The video ended.

A final frame remained.

It showed a document on Victor's desk.

At the bottom was a signature.

Valentina's.

She stared at it.

"I never signed this."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

Valentina looked at him.

"Then who did?"

Marcus's face went white.

"That's the part I never figured out."

From somewhere inside the library came a tiny sound.

A click.

Valentina turned.

The antique grandfather clock had opened.

May you like

A hidden camera stared directly at them.

And its red light was blinking.
