Chapter 5 - What Was Hidden Beneath the ChapelThey were trapped.

Valentina tightened her grip on Ellie.

Marcus turned off the light.

Footsteps passed overhead.

Then stopped.

Someone tried the tunnel door.

Locked.

Valentina whispered:

"How do we get out?"

Marcus pointed deeper into the passage.

"There is another exit."

They moved in darkness.

The tunnel opened beneath the family chapel.

Valentina had not visited the chapel since her wedding.

She looked around.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Marcus approached the altar.

"The floor."

He lifted a loose panel.

Underneath was a steel staircase.

Valentina stared.

"This family is insane."

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

"You haven't seen the worst part."

They descended.

The room below was larger than expected.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Metal cabinets.

A desk.

A safe.

And one object sitting alone on the desk.

A yellow envelope.

ELLIE CARUSO.

Valentina opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

She read it.

Then read it again.

Something was wrong.

The document listed Ellie as Valentina's daughter.

But the medical record attached to it belonged to another child.

Valentina's face drained of color.

"What is this?"

Marcus stepped beside her.

"I don't know."

She opened another envelope.

Hospital records.

Bloodwork.

A neonatal transfer.

Then a handwritten note.

"Replacement confirmed."

Valentina's heart hammered.

Replacement?

She searched the folders.

A name repeated over and over.

Baby A.

Baby B.

Two infant records.

Same date.

Same hospital.

Same night.

Valentina remembered it.

The night Ellie was born.

The chaos.

The emergency surgery.

Victor had been there.

Marcus had been there.

But one memory suddenly surfaced.

A nurse arguing with someone outside the operating room.

Then silence.

Valentina looked up.

"Ellie had a twin?"

Marcus stared at her.

"What?"

She found another document.

Two babies.

One surviving infant.

One infant transferred.

No death record.

Valentina whispered:

"There were two."

Marcus shook his head.

"That can't be."

She turned the page.

A payment receipt.

One million dollars.

Recipient:

St. Martha Children's Foundation.

Date:

Three days after Ellie's birth.

Valentina couldn't breathe.

"Someone paid for a child to disappear."

Marcus looked horrified.

"Why?"

Valentina's eyes moved to the next page.

There was a photograph.

Two newborn babies.

One had a tiny silver bracelet.

The other did not.

Ellie had always worn a silver bracelet.

Valentina remembered buying her one when she was a baby.

But this was different.

The bracelet in the photograph had an engraving.

A number.

Valentina's hands trembled.

"What happened to the other baby?"

Marcus whispered:

"We need to find out."

A noise came from the hallway above.

They both froze.

Someone was inside the chapel.

A key turned.

The door opened.

Victor's voice echoed down the staircase.

"Valentina."

She looked at Marcus.

Victor continued:

"Now you finally understand."

Valentina moved toward the stairs.

"You stole a child?"

Victor laughed softly.

"No."

"You separated twins."

"No."

He took another step.

"We corrected a mistake."

Valentina stared at him.

"What mistake?"

Victor's expression was unreadable.

"Your daughter's birth was never supposed to happen the way it did."

"What does that mean?"

Victor looked at Ellie.

Then his eyes shifted to Valentina.

"Ask yourself why your daughter has your face..."

He paused.

"...but none of your father's blood."

Valentina went still.

Victor smiled.

"That's because Ellie isn't the girl you think she is."

Ellie whispered:

"Mommy?"

May you like

Valentina turned toward her daughter.

And for the first time in her life, doubt entered the space where certainty had always lived.
