Chapter 10 - Beneath Her Childhood BedroomThey entered the mansion through the old servants' corridor.

The house was dark.

Everyone had fled.

Or so Valentina thought.

They reached her childhood bedroom.

Nothing had changed.

The faded wallpaper.

The old piano.

The framed school photographs.

Sofia stood silently in the doorway.

"You lived here?"

Valentina nodded.

"For sixteen years."

Sofia touched the wall.

"I grew up in a room where my mother couldn't even tell me my real name."

Valentina looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

Sofia turned.

"I'm not sure what I'm supposed to call you."

Valentina swallowed.

"Call me Valentina until you're ready for something else."

Sofia nodded.

They found the vault under a loose floorboard.

The key fit.

Inside was a metal box.

Valentina opened it.

There was a cassette recorder.

Three photographs.

A ledger.

And a letter.

She unfolded it.

The handwriting was her father's.

"Valentina, if you are reading this, the family has already begun lying to you."

Valentina stared.

Her father's voice seemed to return from the dead.

"The children were never the problem."

She read faster.

"The problem was what their existence would expose."

Sofia stepped closer.

"What?"

Valentina continued.

"Years ago, your mother discovered our network was being used by people outside the family. Children were being moved through private clinics. Your grandfather wanted to expose them. Victor stopped him."

Valentina froze.

She looked at the ledger.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Doctors.

Police contacts.

Politicians.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Caruso.

Another appeared beneath it.

Marcus Caruso.

Valentina looked at Marcus.

"You knew your father was involved."

Marcus nodded.

"I knew parts."

"You filmed Ellie to protect yourself."

"Yes."

"And you let them hurt her."

His eyes filled with shame.

"I thought I could gather enough evidence to stop them."

Valentina's voice sharpened.

"And how many days did you need?"

Marcus looked down.

"I don't know."

Sofia looked at the ledger.

"There are more names."

Valentina followed her finger.

One name was underlined.

EVELYN CARUSO.

Their grandmother.

"She was alive," Sofia said.

Valentina stared.

"Where?"

A voice answered from behind them.

"Right here."

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood in the bedroom doorway.

White hair.

Straight posture.

A cane in one hand.

A smile that made Valentina feel ten years old again.

Her grandmother.

Evelyn.

Valentina couldn't speak.

Evelyn looked at Sofia.

"You're taller than I expected."

Sofia stepped backward.

"You."

"Yes."

"You stole my life."

Evelyn's expression remained calm.

"I saved you from becoming a weapon."

Valentina stepped forward.

"You manipulated my entire family."

"Your family was weak."

"You ordered the switch."

"I ordered the protection."

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at Ellie.

"Because your daughter carries the one thing this family cannot control."

Valentina stared.

"What?"

Evelyn smiled.

"Memory."

Ellie looked confused.

"Me?"

Evelyn nodded.

"You remember things everyone else chooses to forget."

Valentina's stomach dropped.

Evelyn continued:

"She saw the meeting in Victor's office."

"What meeting?"

Evelyn glanced at Marcus.

"Tell her."

Marcus hesitated.

Evelyn said:

"Tell your sister who was in that room."

Marcus whispered:

"Victor."

Valentina waited.

"Who else?"

Marcus looked at Sofia.

"Gabriel."

Valentina frowned.

Gabriel had claimed to be helping them.

Marcus continued.

"And Helena Ward."

Valentina froze.

The therapist.

The doctor.

The woman paid to manipulate Ellie.

Evelyn said:

"They were planning to use the trust to finance something much bigger."

Valentina's voice dropped.

"What?"

"An election."

Silence.

Evelyn's smile vanished.

"A political machine hidden behind legitimate businesses."

Valentina stared at her.

"And Ellie witnessed the money transfer."

Evelyn nodded.

"Exactly."

A siren sounded outside.

Then a car crashed through the mansion gates.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"The authorities are here."

Valentina felt relief.

Until Evelyn smiled.

"No."

She whispered:

"They're not here to arrest us."

May you like

She looked at the ledger.

"They're here to destroy it."
