Chapter 11 - The Night the Mansion BurnedThe first explosion shook the windows.

Glass shattered.
Ellie screamed.
Valentina grabbed her.
"Stay with me."
Smoke began filling the hallway.
Marcus ran toward the vault.
"The ledger!"
Valentina shouted:
"Leave it!"
But Marcus was already inside.
A second blast rocked the mansion.
The walls groaned.
Evelyn remained strangely calm.
Valentina stared at her.
"You knew."
"I knew they would come."
"Who?"
Evelyn looked toward the front doors.
"The people who were supposed to protect us."
Outside, black vehicles surrounded the estate.
Men in tactical uniforms moved through the smoke.
Some wore police insignia.
Some did not.
Valentina understood.
The system itself had been compromised.
Marcus emerged holding the ledger.
Blood ran from his forehead.
He handed it to Valentina.
"Go."
"What about you?"
"I'll slow them down."
"No."
Marcus looked at Ellie.
"I owe her that."
He disappeared down the corridor.
Valentina, Sofia, Clara and Ellie moved toward the hidden tunnel.
Evelyn remained behind.
Valentina stopped.
"Come with us."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"This is my house."
"You'll die."
"I've survived worse."
Valentina turned to go.
Then Evelyn called her name.
"Valentina."
She looked back.
Evelyn said:
"Your father left one final message."
"What?"
"It isn't in the vault."
"Where?"
Evelyn pointed toward the piano.
"Inside the broken key."
Valentina stared.
She understood.
She ran back.
The piano had been untouched by the explosion.
She opened the keyboard.
One key was cracked.
Inside was a tiny recording device.
She pressed it.
Her father's voice filled the room.
"Valentina."
She nearly collapsed.
"If you're hearing this, you have found Sofia."
Sofia stood beside her.
Her face was wet with tears.
Their father continued:
"I failed both of you."
Valentina closed her eyes.
"I believed money could protect the family. It couldn't."
The recording continued.
"Victor betrayed me."
Valentina stared.
"He used the trust to fund operations I never approved."
A pause.
"And Evelyn knew."
Valentina looked toward her grandmother.
Evelyn lowered her head.
Her father's voice continued:
"The person controlling everything is not Victor."
Everyone froze.
"Her name is Mara."
Valentina frowned.
"Who is Mara?"
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Mara was your father's attorney."
Sofia whispered:
"The woman from the hospital."
Valentina remembered.
A shadowy woman in an old photograph.
Her father's attorney.
The woman who had handled the twins' paperwork.
The same woman who disappeared after the birth.
Her father's voice continued:
"Never trust the woman who tells you the family must survive at any cost."
The recording ended.
Valentina looked at Evelyn.
"Who is Mara now?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
A man's scream echoed from the tunnel.
Then gunfire.
Marcus.
Valentina started running.
They reached the underground passage.
Marcus was on the floor.
Alive.
But surrounded.
A woman stood above him.
Black suit.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
Valentina recognized her from the photograph.
Mara.
Mara looked at Valentina.
Then at Sofia.
Then Ellie.
May you like
"So," she said softly.
"The missing family has finally come home."
