Chapter 14 - Subject Seven Was Standing Beside HerThe hospital alarms began screaming.

Valentina stared at the photograph.

The man in it looked familiar.

Very familiar.

Marcus zoomed in.

"I know him."

"Who?"

"He works at the estate."

Sofia stared at the screen.

"Who?"

Marcus whispered the name.

"Daniel."

Valentina's blood ran cold.

Daniel.

The quiet chauffeur.

The man who had worked for the family for nine years.

He had driven Ellie to school.

He had carried groceries.

He had stood outside Valentina's bedroom during arguments.

He had always seemed invisible.

Valentina whispered:

"He was there the day I came home."

Marcus nodded.

"He filmed the first video."

Valentina's eyes widened.

"What?"

Marcus pulled up metadata.

The first video had not been recorded by Marcus.

Daniel's device had created it.

Valentina stared.

All this time, she had assumed Marcus was the worst betrayal.

He wasn't.

Daniel had been documenting everything too.

But for whom?

Mara's voice returned through the speakers.

"Subject Seven has one simple instruction."

The screen changed.

Daniel standing beside Victor.

Then Daniel handing Mara a file.

Then Daniel standing outside Ellie’s bedroom.

Valentina felt sick.

"He's been watching her."

Sofia said:

"And helping them."

Mara corrected:

"Not helping us."

The speakers went silent.

Then Daniel walked into the corridor.

Alone.

No weapon.

No fear.

Valentina raised hers anyway.

"Stay where you are."

Daniel stopped.

"Valentina."

"You're Subject Seven."

He said nothing.

Sofia stepped forward.

"You were taken too."

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, his expression broke.

"I was."

"Why did you help them?"

Daniel looked toward Ellie.

"Because they had my sister."

Valentina froze.

"Who?"

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Subject Six."

Marcus looked at the files.

"That's..."

"Clara," Daniel said.

Valentina stared.

"The housekeeper?"

Daniel nodded.

Clara had worked for the Caruso family for years.

The quiet woman who had always protected Ellie.

The woman who had warned Valentina not to ask questions.

She wasn't just a servant.

She was another stolen child.

Valentina whispered:

"Then why did she lie?"

Daniel answered:

"Because Mara promised she'd let her brother live."

"The brother?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Me."

Silence.

The family had not been divided by chance.

They had been assembled.

Seven stolen children had been scattered across the same network.

Some became servants.

Some became assets.

Some became tools.

Some didn't even know what they were.

Then Mara appeared at the end of the corridor.

She looked exhausted.

But calm.

"You have finally understood."

Valentina stepped forward.

"You used children to build a criminal empire."

Mara shook her head.

"I inherited one."

"From who?"

Mara smiled.

"Your grandmother."

Valentina turned toward Evelyn.

But Evelyn was gone.

Marcus searched the hallway.

"She took the files."

Valentina's eyes narrowed.

Mara continued:

"Evelyn designed Project Lantern."

Valentina looked at her.

"Then why are you helping her?"

Mara gave a strange smile.

"I'm not."

She pointed toward the hospital exit.

Police lights flashed outside.

"Your grandmother is leaving."

Valentina realized it.

Evelyn had escaped.

And she had taken the original ledger.

Valentina looked at Mara.

"Why tell me?"

Mara's expression became cold.

"Because I want Evelyn exposed too."

Sofia stepped forward.

"What's in the ledger?"

Mara looked at Ellie.

"Everything."

"Everything about the children?"

"Everything about your family."

She paused.

"And one more thing."

Valentina waited.

Mara said:

"Your father did not die naturally."

Silence.

"His death was arranged."

Valentina stared.

"By who?"

Mara looked directly at her.

"By the person who is holding your grandmother's hand right now."

Valentina's phone vibrated.

One incoming message.

No number.

Only a photograph.

Evelyn stood outside.

Beside her was a man Valentina had believed dead for twenty years.

Her father.

"HE HAS BEEN ALIVE ALL ALONG."
