Chapter 9: The Heir Who Was Never Supposed To Exist

The words remained on the screen.

THE SECOND HEIR IS JULIAN STERLING.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The alarm continued screaming through the hidden room, but it sounded distant.

Like it was happening in another world.

Because the only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat.

Julian.

The man I married.

The man who claimed he was trapped by his family.

The man who said he loved me.

Was an heir.

Not just the son of Richard Sterling.

Not just the successor everyone expected.

He was part of the secret my father died trying to protect.

I slowly turned toward him.

"Is it true?"

Julian looked at me.

And his silence answered before his words did.

"Clara..."

"Is it true?"

My voice cracked.

"Are you the second heir?"

Julian swallowed.

"I didn't know."

Sophie immediately stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

Julian looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because the second heir was supposed to be hidden."

She looked at the screen.

"Nobody was supposed to know."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Then how does Victoria know?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

The question behind every secret.

Who had been controlling everything?

The elevator alarm suddenly stopped.

The red lights disappeared.

The room became silent again.

Then the speakers activated.

Victoria's voice filled the hidden chamber.

"Julian."

Everyone looked upward.

"Come home."

Julian's face changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

Because that voice was his mother.

"She is using the building system."

Sophie looked at the controls.

"She has access to everything."

Julian stepped toward the speaker.

"Why?"

A few seconds passed.

Then Victoria answered.

"Because I spent twenty-five years protecting you."

Her voice was calm.

"And now you are destroying everything I built."

Julian clenched his fists.

"You lied to me."

A pause.

"No."

Victoria replied.

"I protected you from the truth."

I looked at the speaker.

"The truth that you made my life a lie?"

Silence.

Then Victoria answered.

"Clara."

Her voice changed slightly.

Not softer.

Almost respectful.

"You have no idea how much danger you are in."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I looked around the room.

"My father."

"Marcus."

"Alexander."

"Julian."

"Sophie."

I pointed at myself.

"But nobody tells me anything."

My voice grew stronger.

"I am the one carrying this child."

"I am the one everyone is fighting over."

"So stop protecting me."

A long silence followed.

Then Victoria spoke.

"Fine."

The speakers crackled.

"Here is the truth."

Everyone became still.

"Twenty-six years ago, your mother discovered that the Sterling inheritance had been corrupted."

Victoria continued.

"Richard wanted control."

"Alexander wanted justice."

"The council wanted stability."

"And your father wanted revenge."

I frowned.

"My father wanted revenge?"

Julian looked at me.

Even he seemed surprised.

Victoria continued.

"Daniel Hayes believed the Sterling family destroyed his life."

My hands tightened.

"What did they do to him?"

No answer.

Then Victoria said:

"Your father was not born Daniel Hayes."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Sophie looked confused.

Victoria continued.

"His real name was Daniel Sterling."

The room went silent.

Nobody breathed.

"No."

I shook my head.

"No."

"My father wasn't..."

Victoria interrupted.

"He was the eldest son of the original Sterling bloodline."

The words shattered everything.

My father.

Daniel Hayes.

Daniel Sterling.

The man I thought was just an ordinary worker.

Was a Sterling.

A rightful heir.

A person who should have owned everything.

Julian stepped backward.

"That means..."

Sophie finished the sentence.

"Clara is not just Emily's daughter."

Her face went pale.

"She's Daniel Sterling's daughter."

Victoria continued:

"And that means the child she carries..."

A pause.

"Has a stronger claim than anyone alive."

My hand moved over my stomach.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Why Richard wanted me gone.

Why the council cared.

Why my father disappeared.

Why everyone was afraid.

My child wasn't just a baby.

To them...

He was a future empire.

A crown nobody could touch.

Julian looked at the screen.

"Why tell us this now?"

Victoria's answer came instantly.

"Because Richard made his move too early."

Everyone looked toward the penthouse camera feed.

Richard was standing beside her.

He looked furious.

Not afraid.

Furious.

"Richard wanted Clara eliminated tonight."

Victoria said.

"But he failed."

Richard glared at her.

"You are making a mistake."

Victoria ignored him.

"The problem is..."

She looked at Julian.

"You chose Clara."

Julian's face changed.

Victoria continued:

"And now I have to protect the family from my own son."

The words hurt him.

I could see it.

Despite everything...

He still wanted his mother's approval.

"Mother..."

Victoria's voice became colder.

"Julian, you were never supposed to love her."

The room went silent.

Julian looked down.

"I know."

"No."

Victoria corrected.

"You don't understand."

A pause.

"You were never supposed to survive after marrying her."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Julian looked up.

Victoria continued:

"The council created a plan."

"The child would be born."

"The bloodline would be restored."

"And Julian..."

She paused.

"Would disappear."

The hidden room became ice cold.

I stared at Julian.

He looked completely destroyed.

His entire life had been planned.

Just like mine.

Two people used by the same family.

Two pieces on the same chessboard.

Sophie suddenly noticed something on the screen.

"Wait."

She moved closer.

"There is another file."

"What file?"

She opened it.

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A legal agreement.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the names written at the bottom were impossible.

Daniel Sterling.

Emily Sterling.

Alexander Sterling.

And one more.

A fourth signature.

One I didn't recognize.

Sophie whispered:

"No..."

Julian looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed at the document.

"The person who created the original inheritance agreement."

Her hand trembled.

"It wasn't Alexander."

The room went silent.

"Then who?"

Sophie looked at the final signature.

And whispered:

"The founder."

I frowned.

"The founder died over a hundred years ago."

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Because the founder left one final condition."

My chest tightened.

"What condition?"

She turned the screen toward me.

The last sentence appeared.

THE STERLING EMPIRE SHALL BELONG TO THE DESCENDANT WHO PROVES THEY CAN PROTECT THE FAMILY FROM ITSELF.

Below it was another line.

Added decades later.

A handwritten note.

A note from my father.

"The true heir is not the one with Sterling blood."

"The true heir is the one willing to walk away from power."

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly...

The entire fight changed.

This wasn't about inheritance.

It wasn't about money.

It was a test.

A test my father had designed before he disappeared.

Then the hidden room door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

Slow footsteps approached.

Someone entered.

An old woman.

Carrying a small suitcase.

Alexander immediately stood.

His face filled with disbelief.

"No..."

The woman looked at him.

Then smiled sadly.

"Hello, Alexander."

A pause.

"It's been twenty years."

My heart stopped.

Because Alexander Sterling looked terrified.

Not of Richard.

Not of Victoria.

Not of anyone.

Of her.

The woman looked at me.

And said:

"Clara."

She opened the suitcase.

Inside was a collection of old photographs.

"My name is Eleanor Hayes."

A pause.

"I am your grandmother."

I froze.

"My grandmother died before I was born."

She smiled.

"That is what they wanted you to believe."

Then she looked at everyone in the room.

"And now..."

May you like

Her expression became cold.

"It's time to reveal who really killed your mother."
