Chapter 3: The Father I Thought I Lost

For twenty years, I believed I knew my own story.

I knew where I came from.

I knew who my parents were.

I knew the tragedy that shaped my childhood.

At least...

I thought I did.

My father, Daniel Hayes, had died when I was ten years old.

That was the story I grew up with.

A hardworking man.

A loving father.

A person who never had enough money but always found a way to make me smile.

I remembered his hands more than his face.

Those rough hands that fixed broken toys.

Those hands that carried me on his shoulders when I was too tired to walk.

Those hands that held mine when my mother passed away.

The last thing I remembered him saying was:

"Clara, no matter what happens, never let powerful people convince you that you are small."

I thought it was just something a father said.

A comforting sentence.

A goodbye.

But now...

Standing inside the Sterling penthouse on my wedding night, with my torn wedding gown covered in dust and tears, I realized those words had been a warning.

Not comfort.

A warning.

"My father?"

My voice barely came out.

Marcus looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words made my chest tighten.

I hated hearing them.

Because people only said "I'm sorry" when the truth was already painful.

"What did my father have to do with this?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Richard looked amused.

Almost relieved.

Because finally, someone else's secret had entered the room.

Alexander Sterling sat down slowly in the leather chair near the window.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not weak.

Never weak.

But tired.

Like he had carried a burden for decades.

"Daniel Hayes was not the man you thought he was."

My eyes narrowed.

"Don't talk about my father like that."

Alexander looked at me.

"You deserve to be angry."

He paused.

"But not at him."

I looked at Marcus.

"Then explain."

Marcus took a deep breath.

"I met your father fifteen years ago."

My heart skipped.

"You knew him?"

He nodded.

"I was twenty-four."

The room became quiet.

"I was part of a special security unit overseas. After leaving the military, I worked private protection jobs."

He looked at Alexander.

"Your father hired me."

Richard laughed quietly.

"Of course."

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard leaned against the table.

"Daniel Hayes."

He said the name with disgust.

"The man who thought he could expose us."

My stomach twisted.

"Expose what?"

Richard smiled.

"Ask your grandfather."

Alexander's eyes hardened.

"Don't call me that."

Richard ignored him.

"Daniel discovered the Sterling family wasn't as clean as the public believed."

I looked at Alexander.

"Is that true?"

The old man's silence was enough.

My entire childhood began falling apart.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Nobody answered.

My voice grew louder.

"Why did everyone lie to me?"

The question echoed through the penthouse.

Nobody moved.

Then Alexander spoke.

"Because your father asked us to."

I froze.

"What?"

Alexander reached into the folder.

He pulled out an old photograph.

A small photograph.

Worn at the edges.

He placed it on the table.

I walked closer.

Slowly.

Because even before I saw it clearly...

Something inside me recognized it.

The photograph showed my father.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was a younger Alexander Sterling.

And beside them...

Was Marcus.

A younger Marcus.

Barely twenty years old.

I stared.

"No..."

Marcus looked away.

"I was there."

My fingers touched the photograph.

"Where?"

Alexander answered.

"The original Sterling estate."

My breathing stopped.

"My father was here?"

"Many times."

"Why?"

Alexander looked at Richard.

"Because Daniel discovered Richard was manipulating the family trust."

Richard immediately interrupted.

"That is ridiculous."

Alexander continued.

"He discovered Richard was planning to use Julian."

I looked down.

At the ring on my finger.

The symbol of a marriage that suddenly felt like a carefully designed trap.

"Why me?"

Nobody spoke.

I asked again.

"Why did Julian choose me?"

Marcus's expression changed.

Because he knew the answer.

"Because your father knew."

I looked at him.

"Knew what?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

"That the Sterling heir could only be protected by someone outside the family."

My eyebrows tightened.

"Protected?"

Alexander nodded.

"The Sterling empire has enemies."

Richard laughed.

"You're making her believe fairy tales."

Alexander ignored him.

"Twenty years ago, there was an attempt to destroy the Sterling family."

I looked around.

"An attempt?"

"Someone inside the family."

The words landed heavily.

Richard's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You think you can accuse me?"

Alexander looked at him.

"I don't think."

A pause.

"I know."

Richard stepped forward.

"You have no proof."

Alexander smiled.

"Actually..."

He looked at Marcus.

"We do."

Marcus reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small device.

A recording.

My heart started racing.

"What is that?"

Marcus looked at me.

"Your father's final message."

The room stopped.

My father's final message.

A man I hadn't heard from in twenty years.

A man I thought had left me forever.

My hands started shaking.

"Play it."

Marcus pressed the button.

At first...

Only static.

Then.

A voice.

A voice I hadn't heard since childhood.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Clara..."

My knees almost gave out.

I covered my mouth.

It was him.

My father.

Alive in a recording.

"Baby girl..."

A broken breath.

"If you're hearing this, then something happened."

Tears immediately filled my eyes.

"Something I tried to prevent."

The recording continued.

"I know you will have questions."

A pause.

"Why I left."

"Why I disappeared."

"Why I allowed you to believe I was gone."

My hands covered my stomach.

My baby moved.

Almost like he could feel my emotions.

The voice continued.

"I did it because the Sterling family was watching us."

Richard's face became pale.

"I found out the truth about their inheritance."

"About the child they needed."

"About the plan they created."

I looked at Richard.

The billionaire who wanted to erase me.

The man who tried to force me out of the family.

The man who knew more than he admitted.

My father's voice became weaker.

"Clara..."

"Never trust a Sterling who tells you they love you without proving it."

My heart shattered.

Because I remembered Julian saying those exact words.

"I love you."

Over and over.

The recording continued.

"But there is one person you can trust."

A pause.

"Someone who protected me when nobody else would."

I looked at Marcus.

The driver lowered his head.

My father's voice said:

"His name is Marcus Reed."

The room went silent.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"If Marcus is there..."

"Listen to him."

"Because he knows the truth."

The audio crackled.

Then my father's final words came.

"Clara..."

"If you married Julian Sterling..."

A long pause.

"He already knows who you really are."

My blood froze.

"What?"

The recording ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then I whispered:

"Who am I?"

Nobody answered.

Not Alexander.

Not Marcus.

Not even Richard.

Until Richard smiled.

A slow, terrifying smile.

"Finally."

Everyone looked at him.

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"She is asking the right question."

He looked directly at me.

"Because Clara Hayes..."

His voice lowered.

"You are not just the woman who married my son."

A pause.

"You are the last living descendant of the person who founded the Sterling empire before my family took it."

I stared at him.

Impossible.

No.

That couldn't be true.

Richard continued:

"And Julian didn't marry you because he loved you."

My heart broke all over again.

"He married you because your bloodline was the only thing standing between him..."

"And complete control of everything."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire penthouse went dark.

Someone had cut the power.

In the darkness...

I heard footsteps.

Not Marcus.

Not Alexander.

Someone else.

A familiar voice whispered from the doorway.

"Clara."

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

The voice of the man who had abandoned me upstairs on my wedding night.

The voice of my husband.

May you like

Julian Sterling.

"I think it's time you heard my side of the story."
