Chapter 14: The Sister Hidden In The Shadows

The woman on the screen looked directly at us.

Not like someone watching a video call.

Like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.

Her eyes were calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came from knowing something everyone else didn't.

Julian stood frozen beside me.

I had never seen him look like that before.

Not when Richard attacked me.

Not when the council arrived.

Not even when he discovered his own mother betrayed him.

But now...

He looked afraid.

"Julian."

The woman on the screen smiled.

"You look surprised."

Julian's lips moved.

But no sound came out.

Finally, he whispered:

"Claire."

The name felt strange.

Like a ghost had suddenly become real.

I looked at him.

"You know her."

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

"You knew you had a sister."

His eyes immediately moved toward me.

"No."

But his voice lacked certainty.

"I knew there were rumors."

"Rumors?"

I stared at him.

"About your own sister?"

Julian looked away.

"I was told she died."

The woman on the screen laughed softly.

"That is the story they gave him."

She looked at me.

"The same way they gave you a story about your parents."

My stomach tightened.

"Who are you?"

She smiled.

"My name is Claire Sterling."

A pause.

"I am Victoria Sterling's daughter."

Everyone became silent.

Victoria.

Julian's mother.

The woman who controlled everything from behind the scenes.

The woman who supposedly had only one child.

Julian.

But now...

Another child existed.

Alexander stepped closer to the screen.

"Victoria."

His voice was full of disbelief.

"She promised me."

Claire's smile disappeared.

"She promised many people many things."

The room became tense.

My father looked at the screen.

"How long have you been hidden?"

Claire looked at him.

"Since birth."

"Why?"

A cold smile appeared.

"Because I was the child they were actually afraid of."

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked at him.

"You were raised to inherit."

A pause.

"I was raised to destroy."

The words shocked everyone.

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked at me.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

She smiled sadly.

"You think this is about who owns the Sterling empire."

She shook her head.

"It never was."

The room went quiet.

"Then what is it about?"

Claire answered:

"Who gets to decide what happens to it."

My father looked at her.

"Your mother trained you."

Claire nodded.

"She prepared me."

Julian's expression hardened.

"Mother did this?"

Claire laughed.

"Of course she did."

"She told you I was dead because she wanted you to be the perfect heir."

She looked at Julian.

"The obedient one."

Julian looked hurt.

"And you?"

Claire's expression became colder.

"The weapon."

Silence.

I looked at the screen.

This woman was not like Sophie.

Sophie had been hidden because of fear.

Claire had been hidden because of purpose.

"What do you want?"

I asked.

Claire looked at me.

For the first time...

Her expression softened.

"Honestly?"

A pause.

"I wanted to meet you."

That surprised me.

"Why?"

"Because you are the person who ruined my entire plan."

My eyes narrowed.

"Your plan?"

She nodded.

"I spent my whole life preparing to take down the Sterling empire."

She looked around the room.

"The same empire that destroyed my family."

I frowned.

"Your family?"

She smiled.

"We have more in common than you think."

My father stepped forward.

"Don't manipulate her."

Claire looked at him.

"You still protect her."

"Of course."

"Even after everything?"

My father went silent.

Claire looked at me.

"Do you know what your father did twenty years ago?"

I froze.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

"I thought you said he was protecting me."

"He was."

A pause.

"But he also made a choice."

"What choice?"

Claire looked at Julian.

Then at me.

"He chose your mother over mine."

The room became silent.

"What?"

Claire continued.

"My mother and your mother were sisters."

I froze.

"No."

She nodded.

"Yes."

The family tree.

The hidden bloodlines.

The erased history.

Everything became more complicated.

"Your mother and mine came from the same Sterling branch."

Claire said.

"But they chose different paths."

"Emily chose love."

She looked at my father.

"Victoria chose power."

Julian lowered his eyes.

Because he finally understood.

His entire family history was built on choices made before he was born.

Claire continued:

"When Emily discovered Richard's crimes, she wanted to expose him."

"But Victoria wanted to use the information."

"For what?"

Claire's eyes hardened.

"To take control."

A painful silence.

"Your mother refused."

She looked at me.

"That is why she died."

My hands trembled.

"So Victoria..."

Claire nodded.

"Was involved."

Julian stepped backward.

"No."

Claire looked at him.

"You still want to believe she is innocent."

Julian's voice cracked.

"She is my mother."

"And Emily was my aunt."

The sentence destroyed him.

Because there was no easy side.

No clean answer.

Then Claire looked at the council.

"You all wanted the heir."

Edward stared at the screen.

"What do you want?"

Claire smiled.

"Freedom."

The council members exchanged looks.

"Freedom?"

Claire nodded.

"I don't want Sterling."

Everyone froze.

Even Edward.

"I want it destroyed."

The same words my father's message had said.

Do not save the empire.

Destroy it.

I looked at Claire.

"You want the same thing my father wanted."

She smiled.

"Exactly."

My father looked at her carefully.

"Then why reveal yourself now?"

Claire looked toward the camera.

"Because Richard made a mistake."

The screen changed.

A security feed appeared.

Richard.

He was no longer in the penthouse.

He was somewhere else.

A control room.

And he was holding something.

A small device.

My father's expression changed.

"What is that?"

Claire answered.

"The Sterling override."

Everyone froze.

Edward stepped forward.

"He cannot have that."

Claire smiled.

"He does."

Julian looked confused.

"What is the override?"

Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered:

"The final failsafe."

I looked at him.

"Explain."

His face became serious.

"If activated..."

A pause.

"The entire Sterling empire disappears."

Silence.

"The companies?"

"Sold."

"The money?"

"Frozen."

"The assets?"

"Destroyed."

I looked at Richard on the screen.

"So he wants to destroy everything?"

My father shook his head.

"No."

His voice became darker.

"He wants to destroy everything..."

"Except one thing."

The screen zoomed in.

Richard pressed the device.

A message appeared.

STERLING BIOLOGICAL SUCCESSION TRANSFER INITIATED.

Everyone froze.

Victoria's face turned pale.

"No."

Edward whispered:

"He found the original protocol."

Julian looked at me.

"What happens if he completes it?"

Nobody answered.

Then Claire did.

Her voice was quiet.

"The inheritance will transfer."

I swallowed.

"To who?"

Claire looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And said:

"To the person carrying the first true Sterling heir."

My hand moved to my stomach.

The room became silent.

Then the system announced:

SUCCESSION PROCESS: 60% COMPLETE.

My father looked terrified.

"Clara."

I looked at him.

"What?"

His voice trembled.

"Your baby isn't just being targeted."

A pause.

"Richard is trying to activate the inheritance before your son is even born."

The countdown appeared.

40% COMPLETE.

30% COMPLETE.

Claire looked at me.

"Clara."

A pause.

"There is only one way to stop it."

"What?"

She looked toward the founder's chamber.

"Open the final archive."

The countdown continued.

20% COMPLETE.

My father grabbed my hand.

"Once you open it..."

He looked at me.

"There is no going back."

I looked at the people around me.

My husband.

My father.

My sister.

My grandmother.

The family that destroyed my life.

And the child who depended on me.

Then I walked toward the sealed chamber.

The ring began glowing.

The ancient door slowly opened.

And from inside...

A voice played.

A voice recorded more than one hundred years ago.

The voice of the Sterling founder.

"If you are hearing this..."

The entire room froze.

"Then the Sterling family has finally reached its final day."

A pause.

"And the person standing before this door..."

The voice continued.

May you like

"Will decide whether Sterling survives..."

"Or disappears forever."
