Chapter 11: The Brother Richard Tried To Erase

The room stopped breathing.

Those words did not feel real.

They couldn't.

My mind rejected them before my heart even had a chance to react.

"Richard's older brother..."

I repeated slowly.

"My father was Richard Sterling's brother?"

Eleanor looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Yes."

I looked toward the security screen.

Richard was still standing in the penthouse.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he had known this moment would come.

Like he had been saving this secret as his final weapon.

Richard smiled.

"Now you understand, Clara."

His voice echoed through the speakers.

"Everything you believed about your family was carefully designed."

Julian stepped closer to the screen.

"Who was your father?"

Richard laughed.

"Don't pretend you don't know."

His eyes moved toward Alexander.

"You know exactly who he was."

Alexander looked away.

And that reaction hurt.

Because once again...

Silence was the answer.

"Tell me."

My voice shook.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Please."

She looked at the old ring on the table.

Then she began.

"His name was Michael Sterling."

The name sounded unfamiliar.

But everyone else reacted.

Alexander closed his eyes.

Julian looked shocked.

Even Sophie stepped backward.

"Michael..."

Julian whispered.

"I thought he was dead."

Eleanor nodded.

"Everyone did."

I looked at Julian.

"You knew about him?"

Julian shook his head.

"Only rumors."

He looked at Alexander.

"My entire life, I was told he never existed."

Eleanor continued.

"Michael was Alexander's first son."

She looked at the founder's ring.

"He was the person chosen to inherit Sterling."

I frowned.

"Then why didn't he?"

"Because he refused."

The answer surprised me.

"Why?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Because Michael believed the same thing your father believed."

"That no person should own enough power to control everyone around them."

She looked at Richard.

"And Richard hated him for that."

The screen flickered.

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful, Eleanor."

She ignored him.

"Richard spent his entire life believing Michael stole what belonged to him."

"But Michael never wanted it."

A pause.

"He wanted freedom."

My chest tightened.

"So what happened?"

Eleanor looked at me.

"Richard made sure Michael disappeared."

The words felt heavy.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then Alexander spoke.

His voice was quiet.

"I was there."

Everyone looked at him.

The powerful founder of Sterling Holdings.

The man who seemed impossible to break.

For the first time...

He looked like an old father carrying regret.

"Michael discovered Richard was manipulating the company accounts."

Alexander continued.

"He found evidence."

"Evidence of what?"

"Illegal deals."

"Money laundering."

"Bribery."

"Richard was building an empire on corruption."

My hands tightened.

"So Michael exposed him?"

Alexander nodded.

"He was going to."

A pause.

"But before he could..."

He stopped.

I already knew.

"What happened?"

Alexander looked at Richard's image on the screen.

"Michael disappeared."

The room became silent.

Richard's voice interrupted.

"Enough with the dramatic story."

Everyone looked at the screen.

Richard's face was cold again.

"You all want to paint me as the villain."

He smiled.

"But nobody asks why Michael disappeared."

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

"Ask your grandmother."

Eleanor's face became pale.

"Richard..."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"Tell her."

The screen went black.

Then a new video appeared.

An old recording.

A younger version of Michael Sterling appeared.

My breath stopped.

Even though I had never met him...

I saw the resemblance.

The eyes.

The expression.

The same face I saw every morning in the mirror.

My father.

The video played.

Michael was sitting in an office.

He looked tired.

Afraid.

"To whoever finds this..."

His voice trembled.

"I made a mistake."

My heart tightened.

"I trusted the wrong people."

The recording continued.

"I thought exposing Richard would save the family."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

He looked directly at the camera.

"I underestimated how far my brother would go."

The video cut.

Then another scene appeared.

A hospital room.

A woman lying in bed.

My mother.

Emily.

I covered my mouth.

She looked young.

Beautiful.

Terrified.

Michael was beside her.

Holding a newborn baby.

Me.

My tears fell instantly.

My mother whispered something.

The audio was unclear.

Then Michael looked at the camera.

"If anything happens to me..."

He held the baby closer.

"Protect Clara."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard's voice returned.

"You see?"

"He knew."

"He knew he was creating a war."

I looked at the screen.

"You killed him."

My voice was quiet.

Richard did not answer.

That was enough.

"You killed my father."

Richard's face became cold.

"I removed a threat."

The room erupted.

Julian moved toward the screen.

"You admit it?"

Richard laughed.

"Admit?"

He smiled.

"Everyone in this family has blood on their hands."

He looked at Alexander.

"Even him."

Alexander said nothing.

Richard continued.

"Your grandfather built the machine."

"I simply learned how to use it."

The words cut through everyone.

Then the building shook again.

This time harder.

The ceiling lights exploded.

Marcus immediately grabbed me.

"We need to move."

Julian looked at the security panel.

"Richard has control of the tower."

Sophie looked at the emergency exits.

"Where can we go?"

Eleanor suddenly picked up the old ring.

"There is one place."

Everyone looked at her.

"A place Richard cannot access."

Alexander frowned.

"You mean..."

Eleanor nodded.

"The founder's chamber."

Julian looked confused.

"I thought it was destroyed."

"It was hidden."

She looked at me.

"Only Michael's bloodline can open it."

My eyes fell on the ring.

"Me?"

Eleanor nodded.

I didn't want power.

I didn't want secrets.

I didn't want any part of the Sterling family.

But my child was inside me.

And tonight...

Everyone who wanted power wanted him.

I took the ring.

The moment my fingers touched it...

The hidden wall behind the desk opened.

A passage appeared.

Everyone froze.

Because carved into the stone wall was a message.

A message written decades ago.

My father's handwriting.

"Clara, if you are reading this..."

"The Sterling family has failed."

A second line appeared.

"But you still have a choice."

Then the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

"Do not save the empire."

"Destroy it."

Behind us...

The sound of footsteps approached.

Someone was coming.

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

His face changed.

"Impossible."

I turned.

Standing at the entrance...

Was someone I never expected.

Someone who had disappeared for twenty years.

Someone who should not have been alive.

A man with my father's eyes.

He looked at me.

And whispered:

"Clara."

A pause.

"I'm sorry I let you believe I was dead."

My entire body froze.

May you like

Because the man standing before me...

Was my father.
