Chapter 8: The Heir Hidden In Plain Sight

For several seconds...
Nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Julian.
Not even Sophie.
The hidden room beneath the Sterling tower felt like it had stopped existing.
There was only one sentence echoing inside my head.
The rightful heir was born fifteen years ago.
And then Sophie said:
"Me."
I stared at her.
My best friend.
The woman who held my hand when I cried over Julian.
The woman who helped me choose my wedding dress.
The woman who stood beside me while I promised my life to a man she apparently knew more about than I did.
"No."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
"Sophie, no."
Her eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.
Regret.
Guilt.
Maybe even sadness.
But she didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
"You knew."
My voice became quieter.
"You knew everything."
Sophie looked down.
"I knew pieces."
"Pieces?"
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
"You were there."
I pointed toward the wedding dress.
"You watched me marry him."
I pointed toward Julian.
"You knew he was hiding something."
Then toward the letter.
"You knew my family was connected to the Sterling empire."
My voice cracked.
"And you still let me walk into that room alone."
Sophie closed her eyes.
"I tried to stop it."
Julian stepped forward.
"When?"
Sophie looked at him.
"Before the wedding."
Julian's expression changed.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"I knew Richard had planned something."
"Then why didn't you tell us?"
Sophie looked at me.
"Because I didn't know who to trust."
The answer should have made me angry.
But instead...
It confused me.
Because for the first time that night, someone sounded like me.
Someone who had spent hours discovering that every person around them had a hidden agenda.
Julian looked at the document Sophie placed on the desk.
"What is that?"
She didn't answer.
I walked closer.
Slowly.
The pregnancy pain was still there.
The fear was still there.
But something inside me had changed.
I was tired of being protected.
Tired of being the last person to know.
I picked up the document.
The first page was a legal record.
A birth certificate.
But not Sophie's.
Someone else's.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The name.
The date.
Everything became blurry.
Because I recognized the name of the mother.
Emily Hayes.
My mother.
My hand began shaking.
"No..."
Sophie watched me carefully.
"Clara..."
I looked up.
"Explain."
Her lips pressed together.
"The truth is complicated."
"Everything tonight is complicated."
My voice became cold.
"Try."
Sophie took a breath.
"Your mother had another child."
The room went silent.
Another child.
Another child?
My brain refused to process it.
"My mother..."
I whispered.
"Had another daughter?"
Sophie nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Julian.
Then at Sophie.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
I just didn't want to say it.
Sophie looked at me.
"Me."
The world tilted.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
"No."
Sophie stepped closer.
"I didn't know either."
I stared at her.
"You expect me to believe that?"
She nodded.
"Because it's true."
Julian looked between us.
"You're saying Sophie is Clara's sister?"
Sophie nodded.
"Half-sister."
My chest tightened.
All those years.
All those memories.
The person I thought was just my closest friend...
Was family.
"Why?"
I whispered.
"Why did nobody tell us?"
Sophie looked at the old desk.
"Because your mother was trying to protect both of us."
She touched the document.
"When she discovered Richard was trying to control the Sterling inheritance, she made a decision."
"What decision?"
"She separated us."
A painful silence.
"You were sent away with your father."
She looked at me.
"And I was hidden inside the Sterling family."
I frowned.
"Inside?"
Sophie nodded.
"My identity was erased."
Julian looked shocked.
"How?"
"Victoria."
The name changed everything.
Sophie continued.
"Your mother made a deal with Victoria Sterling."
I felt sick.
"Victoria?"
Sophie nodded.
"She promised to hide me from Richard."
"But why would Victoria help?"
Sophie looked at Julian.
"Because she was afraid of what Richard would become."
Julian's face changed.
His mother.
Again.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
I looked at Sophie.
"Then why did you become my friend?"
Her expression softened.
"Because I wanted to know you."
A pause.
"The sister I never got to have."
For a moment...
I saw the little girl inside her.
The child who had also lost her mother.
The child who had grown up surrounded by secrets.
But then I remembered.
She knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
"You should have told me."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I know."
The honesty hurt more than excuses.
Julian walked toward the desk.
"There is something missing."
Everyone looked at him.
He picked up the documents.
"This explains Sophie."
He looked at me.
"But not the attack tonight."
He was right.
There was still Richard.
Still Victoria.
Still the council.
Still the person controlling everything.
Sophie suddenly became serious.
"Because Richard isn't trying to get rid of Clara."
I looked at her.
"Then what is he trying to do?"
Her eyes moved to my stomach.
"He wants the baby born under his control."
A chill ran through me.
"What does that mean?"
Sophie hesitated.
Then said:
"The Sterling trust has a second condition."
Julian frowned.
"What condition?"
Sophie looked at him.
"The heir must be raised by the ruling family."
My blood went cold.
"No."
Sophie nodded.
"If Richard wins..."
She looked at my stomach.
"He doesn't need Clara."
"He only needs the child."
I instinctively stepped back.
Protecting my baby.
Julian immediately moved beside me.
But I pulled away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn't know him anymore.
Sophie noticed.
"There is something else."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She reached into her coat.
This time she pulled out a small envelope.
"My mother left this for you."
My heart stopped.
"Another letter?"
Sophie nodded.
"She said you should only read it when the Sterling family showed its true face."
I took the envelope.
My fingers trembled.
The handwriting on the front made my breath disappear.
It wasn't my mother's.
It was my father's.
One sentence.
Only one.
"Clara, if Sophie is standing beside you, then the final betrayal has already begun."
I looked up.
Slowly.
Everyone was silent.
Then the lights in the hidden room suddenly turned red.
An alarm began ringing.
Julian looked at the security panel.
His face changed.
"What happened?"
Sophie moved toward the screen.
And then she froze.
"What?"
I looked at the monitor.
A message appeared.
STERLING TOWER LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
AUTHORIZED BY: CLARA HAYES.
My heart stopped.
"I didn't do that."
Julian stared at the screen.
"Someone is using your identity."
A second message appeared.
This time with a video.
A live camera feed.
Richard Sterling was standing inside the penthouse.
Beside him...
Was Victoria.
And in Victoria's hand...
Was a folder.
She looked directly into the camera.
As if she knew we were watching.
Then she smiled.
"Clara."
Her voice echoed through the hidden room.
"If you are seeing this..."
A pause.
"Then you have finally discovered the truth."
She lifted the folder.
Inside was something that made Julian's face lose all color.
A DNA report.
Victoria continued:
"But there is one thing your father never knew."
She looked at the camera.
"The child you are carrying..."
A pause.
"Is not the only Sterling heir."
The screen flickered.
Then the final message appeared.
DNA MATCH CONFIRMED.
SECOND HEIR LOCATED.
Julian whispered:
"No..."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
He stared at the screen.
Terrified.
Because he knew the answer.
And then Victoria said:
May you like
"The second heir..."
"Is Julian Sterling."
