Chapter 12: The Father Who Never Died

For twenty years...
I had imagined this moment.
Not exactly like this.
Not inside a hidden chamber beneath the Sterling Tower.
Not surrounded by secrets, betrayal, and people who had spent my entire life manipulating the truth.
But I had imagined seeing my father again.
Hundreds of times.
In dreams.
In memories.
In those quiet moments when I wished I could ask him one more question.
Why did you leave?
Why didn't you come back?
Why did you let me believe you were gone?
But every version of that dream ended the same way.
With me waking up alone.
Because Daniel Hayes was dead.
At least...
That was what I believed.
Now he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But still my father.
His eyes were exactly the same.
The same eyes that looked at me from old photographs.
The same eyes that watched me ride my bicycle for the first time.
The same eyes that looked at me before disappearing from my life.
My knees almost gave out.
"Clara..."
His voice broke.
Just hearing him say my name destroyed the wall I had built inside myself.
"No."
I stepped backward.
Everyone became silent.
Because nobody knew what I would do.
Not even me.
"No."
I shook my head.
"You can't be here."
My father looked down.
"I know."
"You died."
A painful expression crossed his face.
"I know."
"You let me believe you died."
"I know."
Each answer hurt more.
Because he wasn't defending himself.
He wasn't making excuses.
He was accepting the pain.
And somehow...
That made it harder.
I walked closer.
Slowly.
My hands were shaking.
"Why?"
One word.
The question I had carried for twenty years.
"Why did you leave me?"
My father looked at me.
And for a moment...
He wasn't a secret.
He wasn't a Sterling.
He wasn't someone connected to this war.
He was just my father.
A man who had missed his daughter's childhood.
"I didn't leave you because I wanted to."
His voice cracked.
"I left because staying would have killed you."
I looked at Richard's security feed.
At the family that had destroyed everything.
"Everyone says that."
My voice became cold.
"Everyone says they were protecting me."
I looked directly at him.
"But I was the one who suffered."
My father closed his eyes.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Tears filled my eyes.
"You missed my first day of school."
"You missed my graduation."
"You missed every birthday."
"You missed everything."
The room was silent.
Even Richard stopped speaking.
My father lowered his head.
"I know."
A tear fell from his face.
"And I hated myself for every day I wasn't there."
That broke something inside me.
Because I had spent years imagining that he didn't care.
That he chose to leave.
But now...
I saw the pain.
The same pain I carried.
"Then why come back now?"
He looked at my stomach.
At my unborn child.
"Because history was repeating itself."
My body became tense.
"What does that mean?"
He looked around the room.
At Alexander.
At Julian.
At Sophie.
Then finally at me.
"Because they were about to use your child the same way they used me."
The words sent a chill through me.
My father stepped closer.
"Clara, listen carefully."
His voice became serious.
"The Sterling family doesn't want your baby because of inheritance."
"Then why?"
He looked toward the hidden passage.
"Because the founder left something behind."
Eleanor nodded.
"The final archive."
My father looked at her.
"You found it."
She nodded.
"Too late."
My father sighed.
"Maybe."
Julian stepped forward.
"Daniel."
Everyone looked at him.
My father stared at Julian.
A complicated expression appeared.
Anger.
Sadness.
Recognition.
"You are Richard's son."
Julian lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
My father looked at him for a long moment.
Then said:
"But you are not like him."
Julian looked surprised.
"How do you know?"
"Because if you were..."
My father looked at me.
"Clara would already be dead."
The words were painful.
But true.
Julian looked away.
"I failed her."
My father didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The answer shocked everyone.
"You failed."
My father continued.
"But failure is not the same as choosing evil."
Julian looked at him.
For the first time all night...
Someone from my family acknowledged that Julian was not just a villain.
He was someone trapped.
Then a loud sound interrupted us.
The building shook.
Marcus looked at his phone.
His face changed.
"What?"
Everyone turned.
"What happened?"
Marcus looked at me.
"Richard has activated the final security protocol."
Alexander frowned.
"That protocol was never supposed to exist."
Marcus nodded.
"Someone modified it."
"Who?"
Marcus looked toward Victoria's name on the security screen.
Nobody spoke.
Because they already knew.
Victoria had made her move.
My father looked at the screen.
"She always was the most dangerous one."
Julian froze.
"My mother?"
My father nodded.
"Richard wants power."
"Victoria wants control."
A pause.
"But she wants something else."
"What?"
My father looked at Julian.
"She wants to erase the Sterling bloodline completely."
Everyone became silent.
Sophie frowned.
"Why would she destroy her own family?"
My father answered:
"Because she knows the truth."
"The Sterling empire cannot be controlled by anyone who wants power."
A pause.
"It can only be controlled by someone willing to destroy it."
I looked at the message carved on the wall.
DO NOT SAVE THE EMPIRE. DESTROY IT.
My father continued.
"Your mother and I spent years trying to find a way to end this."
"But we failed."
He looked at me.
"Now it's your choice."
I stared at him.
"My choice?"
He nodded.
"The founder's chamber contains everything."
"Every secret."
"Every account."
"Every crime."
"Every person who betrayed your family."
"But there is a price."
I felt a chill.
"What price?"
My father looked at the old ring on my finger.
"Once you open that chamber..."
A pause.
"The Sterling empire will know you are the true heir."
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
But this time...
There was no panic.
Because everyone understood.
Someone had entered.
A voice came from the hallway.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
"Daniel."
My father's face changed.
Everyone turned.
Victoria Sterling stood at the entrance.
Behind her were armed security guards.
She looked at my father.
Twenty years of hatred passed between them in one second.
"You should have stayed dead."
My father stepped in front of me.
"And you should have told your son the truth."
Victoria looked at Julian.
Then at me.
Then at my stomach.
Her expression became unreadable.
"Clara."
She spoke softly.
"I am sorry."
I almost laughed.
Another apology.
Another person arriving after the damage was done.
But then she said something I never expected.
"I was wrong about your child."
Everyone froze.
Victoria looked at me.
"The baby is not the threat."
A pause.
"Your baby is the only person who can save us."
My father stared at her.
"What did you do?"
Victoria's eyes turned cold.
"I made sure Richard could never reach the child."
A silence.
Then Julian whispered:
"Mother..."
Victoria looked at him.
"I killed the inheritance protocol."
Nobody moved.
"What?"
She continued.
"But Richard activated the backup."
My father stepped forward.
"Who has the backup?"
Victoria looked toward the ceiling.
Then answered:
"The council."
A notification appeared on the security screen.
A new message.
COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE ARRIVED.
The elevator doors opened.
This time...
There wasn't one person.
There were six.
The people who had controlled the Sterling family from the shadows.
The true owners of the empire.
The oldest man among them stepped forward.
He looked directly at me.
And smiled.
"Clara Hayes."
A pause.
"We have waited twenty-six years for you."
He looked at my father.
"Your father escaped us."
Then at Julian.
"Your husband disappointed us."
Then finally at my unborn child.
"But the heir..."
May you like
His smile widened.
"Will belong to us."
