CHAPTER 8 The Stranger Inside the House

The darkness swallowed the room.
For three seconds, neither Laura nor Eduardo moved.
The only sound was their breathing.
Then came the noise again.
A slow creak from downstairs.
Someone walking.
Not rushing.
Not hiding.
Walking like they already owned the house.
Laura looked at Eduardo.
For the first time in fourteen years, she saw real fear in his eyes.
Not an act.
Not a performance.
Real fear.
"Who is that?"
Eduardo didn't answer.
He stepped toward the door.
Laura grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Her voice hardened.
"I understand one thing."
She pointed toward the photograph of Daniel.
"Someone is after my son."
Eduardo's jaw tightened.
"And now you want me to believe you're protecting us?"
He looked away.
That tiny movement told her everything.
There was something he wasn't saying.
Something worse.
The footsteps stopped.
Right outside the office.
Laura held her breath.
The doorknob slowly turned.
Eduardo moved in front of her.
A strange reaction.
Instinctive.
Protective.
For a moment, Laura almost remembered the old Eduardo.
The man who stood between her and danger.
Almost.
Then the door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Around sixty.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
The same man Laura had seen in the surveillance photographs.
The stranger from Eduardo's office.
The man who had said:
The schedule changes.
He looked at Laura.
Then at Eduardo.
"You failed."
Eduardo's face hardened.
"I handled it."
"No."
The man's voice was calm.
"You lost control."
Laura stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The man ignored her.
He looked directly at Eduardo.
"The hospital knows about Silvana."
A pause.
"The police are asking questions."
Eduardo clenched his fists.
"You told me everything was clean."
"It was."
The man looked at Laura.
"Until she started digging."
Laura felt anger replace fear.
"You've been watching me."
The man smiled slightly.
"You were always smarter than Eduardo expected."
Eduardo suddenly moved.
"Enough."
The stranger looked at him.
"Do you think you can stop this now?"
Silence.
Then:
"You were given one job."
"Make sure Laura signed."
"You couldn't even do that."
Laura looked at Eduardo.
Signed.
The word echoed.
Everything came back.
The documents.
The hospital.
The water.
The doctor.
The plan.
This wasn't about stealing her money.
The signatures were the key.
But why?
The stranger placed a folder on the desk.
"We move tomorrow."
Laura's voice was cold.
"Move what?"
The man looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed amused.
"You really don't know."
"Know what?"
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Medical reports.
And a birth certificate.
He slid it across the desk.
Laura looked down.
Her entire body went still.
The name on the certificate:
Daniel Mendoza Ríos
Mother:
Laura Mendoza
Father:
Unknown
Laura's heart stopped.
"What is this?"
Eduardo looked away.
The stranger continued.
"Your son has never legally belonged to Eduardo."
Laura stared at him.
"He's his father."
The man smiled.
"Are you sure?"
She turned toward Eduardo.
"Tell me."
Eduardo remained silent.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
"Tell me!"
Finally Eduardo whispered:
"Laura..."
"No."
Her eyes filled with anger.
"Not another lie."
He closed his eyes.
"Daniel was born through an arrangement."
The room spun.
"What arrangement?"
Eduardo looked at the floor.
"A medical procedure."
"What procedure?"
No answer.
The stranger answered for him.
"A fertility program."
Laura looked between them.
"I don't understand."
The stranger leaned closer.
"Your surgery three weeks ago wasn't your first connection to us."
Laura felt sick.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you were selected years ago."
"Selected?"
"Yes."
The man's voice remained emotionless.
"You had certain genetic characteristics."
Laura stepped backward.
"No."
"You were healthy. Intelligent. Successful."
"Stop."
"You were exactly what they needed."
She shook her head.
"I am not a file."
The man smiled.
"Everyone is a file to someone."
Eduardo suddenly grabbed the folder.
"Leave."
The stranger looked surprised.
"Excuse me?"
"I said leave."
For the first time, Eduardo raised his voice.
"I won't let you touch my family."
Laura stared at him.
Family.
The word sounded strange coming from him.
The stranger laughed quietly.
"Now you care?"
He stepped closer.
"You should have thought about that before signing the agreement."
Eduardo's expression changed.
"What agreement?"
The stranger's smile disappeared.
"The one you signed."
A silence followed.
Laura looked at Eduardo.
"What agreement?"
Eduardo didn't answer.
The stranger continued.
"The same agreement that gave us control if you failed."
Laura's heart raced.
"Control of what?"
The man looked at her.
"Everything."
A sound came from the hallway.
Another person.
The stranger turned.
"Time to go."
But before leaving, he looked at Laura.
"You want the truth?"
He placed a small envelope on the desk.
"Ask your husband what happened on March 14, eight years ago."
Laura looked confused.
"What happened?"
The man smiled.
"That was the day Isabel disappeared."
Then he walked away.
The front door closed.
The house became silent again.
Laura slowly turned toward Eduardo.
"Who is Isabel?"
He didn't answer.
"Who was she?"
Still nothing.
Laura picked up the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A younger Eduardo.
A younger Silvana.
And a woman standing between them.
Isabel.
On the back:
MARCH 14, 2018
Below it:
THE NIGHT YOUR FAMILY BEGAN.
Laura looked at Eduardo.
"Tell me."
His face was pale.
"Laura..."
"Tell me what happened."
He sat down.
For the first time, the powerful, confident man she knew looked broken.
"Isabel wasn't my wife."
Laura froze.
"Then who was she?"
Eduardo looked at the photograph.
And whispered:
"She was Daniel's biological mother."
The room went completely silent.
Laura couldn't breathe.
"No."
Eduardo looked up.
His eyes were filled with regret.
"Daniel was never supposed to be yours."
Her fingers loosened.
The photograph slipped to the floor.
"Then whose child have I been raising for seven years?"
Eduardo looked toward the dark window.
And said the words that shattered her world:
"Laura..."
May you like
"Daniel is the reason Isabel had to disappear."
