CHAPTER 7 The Voice Behind the Door

For several seconds after the call ended, Laura couldn't move.
The phone remained pressed against her ear.
The crowd around the hospital continued moving.
People shouted questions.
Cars passed.
A child laughed somewhere nearby.
The world kept turning.
But Laura felt like everything had stopped.
Because the last voice she heard wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't a criminal.
It wasn't someone hiding in the shadows.
It was the man who had kissed her goodbye that morning.
The man who had made her coffee.
The man who had tucked a blanket around Daniel when he was sick.
Her husband.
Eduardo.
She immediately called back.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Third time.
The number was disconnected.
Laura stared at the screen.
Impossible.
Someone had used a disposable phone.
Someone had planned this.
She looked toward the hospital entrance.
The place where Silvana had disappeared.
The place where Laura had almost become another piece of their plan.
Then her phone vibrated again.
A message.
From Eduardo.
Where are you?
Laura's fingers tightened around the phone.
He was asking where she was.
Not:
Are you okay?
Not:
Why did you leave?
Not:
Did something happen?
Just:
Where are you?
She typed a response.
Stopped.
Deleted it.
Elena's warning echoed in her mind.
Tell him nothing.
Laura locked her phone.
Then walked away.
Twenty minutes later, she arrived at Elena's office.
Her friend opened the door before Laura even knocked.
One look at her face was enough.
"What happened?"
Laura stepped inside.
"Eduardo knows."
Elena closed the door immediately.
"How?"
"He called me."
"What did he say?"
Laura swallowed.
"He didn't call."
She looked at Elena.
"Silvana called."
A pause.
"Then Eduardo took the phone."
Elena's expression changed.
"Are you sure?"
"I know his voice."
"Laura..."
"I know his voice better than anyone."
The room went silent.
Elena walked to her desk.
"Then we have to assume the situation has changed."
"Changed?"
"Yes."
She opened her laptop.
"We were trying to expose him."
She looked up.
"Now we need to survive him."
They spent the next hour reviewing everything.
The surveillance files.
The medical documents.
The recordings.
The hidden agreements.
Then Elena found something strange.
"Wait."
She enlarged a document.
"What?"
"This signature."
Laura leaned closer.
It was the consent form from the locker.
Eduardo's signature.
Silvana's signature.
And the doctor.
But beneath them...
A fourth signature.
A witness.
A name Laura didn't recognize.
Marcos Valdés.
Elena searched the database.
Her face slowly changed.
"Who is he?"
Elena didn't answer immediately.
That scared Laura more.
Finally she said:
"Marcos Valdés was a private investigator."
"Was?"
"He died six years ago."
Laura stared at her.
"Then how did he sign a document three months before my surgery?"
Neither woman spoke.
Because they both understood.
Someone was using dead people's names.
Someone had been building this operation for years.
At noon, Laura received a call from Daniel's school.
Her heart immediately dropped.
"Mrs. Mendoza?"
"Yes?"
"This is the principal."
She gripped the phone.
"Is Daniel okay?"
"Yes, yes. He's fine."
She exhaled.
"Then what's wrong?"
"There was an issue with his emergency contact information."
"What issue?"
"We received a request this morning to update his records."
Laura frowned.
"From whom?"
The principal hesitated.
"From his father."
Her blood went cold.
"What did he change?"
"The emergency contact."
"To who?"
Silence.
Then:
"Silvana Armenta Ortiz."
Laura couldn't speak.
"That's impossible."
"Mrs. Mendoza, your husband provided signed authorization."
"He did not have permission."
The principal lowered his voice.
"Ma'am..."
"What?"
"The signature matches the one we have on file."
Laura ended the call.
Her hands were shaking.
Eduardo wasn't just planning to take her money.
He was rewriting Daniel's life.
Removing her.
Replacing her.
That evening, Laura returned home alone.
Eduardo wasn't there.
Daniel was staying temporarily with Elena's sister.
The house felt strangely empty.
Almost peaceful.
But Laura knew better.
Silence had become the most dangerous thing in her life.
She entered the bedroom.
Something was different.
She couldn't explain it.
Then she noticed.
The painting above the bed.
Slightly crooked.
Laura approached it.
Behind the painting was a small black device attached to the wall.
A camera.
Her breath caught.
She removed it carefully.
Then checked the room.
Another one.
Inside the smoke detector.
Another.
Facing the bed.
Another.
Facing the closet.
Someone had been watching their private life.
Their marriage.
Their home.
Everything.
Laura's hands trembled with anger.
How long?
How long had Eduardo been spying on her?
She searched the house.
Not randomly.
Carefully.
If there were cameras...
There might be more.
In Eduardo's office, she opened the locked drawer she'd never been allowed to touch.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Passports.
Bank records.
Medical reports.
And one folder.
Her name.
MENDOZA FAMILY TRANSITION PLAN
Laura opened it.
The first page contained a timeline.
Not a business timeline.
A life timeline.
Phase One: Establish Trust
Completed.
Phase Two: Marriage and Asset Integration
Completed.
Phase Three: Medical Preparation
Completed.
Phase Four: Child Custody Adjustment
Pending.
Laura stopped reading.
Child custody adjustment.
Pending.
Below it was a date.
Tomorrow.
A noise came from behind her.
A floorboard.
Laura turned.
Nobody.
The office door slowly moved.
Someone was standing outside.
She reached for her phone.
The door opened.
Eduardo walked in.
Calm.
Relaxed.
Holding two cups of coffee.
The same smile.
The same face.
The same man.
Except now Laura knew what lived underneath.
"I thought you'd be here."
Her blood froze.
"You knew?"
Eduardo placed the coffee on the desk.
"I know you better than anyone."
Laura stepped back.
"Where is Daniel?"
His expression changed slightly.
"What?"
"Where is my son?"
Eduardo sighed.
"Laura."
"Answer me."
"He's safe."
"With who?"
Eduardo looked at the folder in her hands.
Then back at her.
"You found things you weren't supposed to find."
The room became ice cold.
"Things?"
Laura laughed bitterly.
"Is that what you call it?"
"You're misunderstanding."
"No."
She shook her head.
"For fourteen years, I was married to a stranger."
Eduardo's jaw tightened.
"You don't understand what happened."
"Then explain."
He looked away.
For the first time...
Laura saw something unexpected.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Laura..."
His voice dropped.
"There are people much more dangerous than me."
She froze.
"What does that mean?"
Eduardo stepped closer.
"Everything I've done..."
"I did it to protect us."
Laura stared at him.
"Protect us?"
"Yes."
"By stealing from me?"
"By lying to me?"
"By watching me?"
Eduardo didn't answer.
Instead, he reached into his pocket.
And placed something on the desk.
A photograph.
Laura picked it up.
Her entire body went numb.
It was a picture of Daniel.
Taken that afternoon.
He was sitting in a car.
Smiling.
Beside him...
Was Silvana.
On the back of the photo, someone had written:
THE CHILD WAS NEVER YOURS TO KEEP.
Laura looked at Eduardo.
"What is this?"
Eduardo's face was pale.
For the first time in fourteen years...
He looked terrified of someone else.
"Laura..."
He whispered.
"You need to listen carefully."
"Because tomorrow morning..."
He looked toward the window.
"...they're coming for Daniel."
The lights suddenly went out.
The house fell into darkness.
And from somewhere downstairs...
A door opened.
May you like
Someone had entered.
