CHAPTER 1 The Flight That Never Left

Laura Mendoza had always believed that betrayal announced itself loudly.
A lipstick stain.
A midnight phone call.
A perfume that didn't belong.
Instead, hers arrived wrapped in kindness.
A forehead kiss.
A warm cup of coffee.
A smile she'd trusted for fourteen years.
She stood in the upstairs hallway after Elena ended the call, staring toward the master bedroom where Eduardo hummed softly while packing her suitcase.
He looked... happy.
Not nervous.
Not guilty.
Happy.
The realization chilled her more than anything Daniel had whispered.
He wasn't hoping his plan would work.
He already believed it had.
Laura forced herself to breathe slowly.
One mistake.
One emotional confrontation.
One accusation without proof.
Everything Elena had warned her about would disappear.
If Eduardo held a valid power of attorney, he could easily claim she was paranoid or emotionally unstable after surgery.
No.
She needed evidence.
Real evidence.
She quietly climbed the remaining stairs.
Eduardo stood beside the bed folding one of her business jackets.
"There you are," he smiled. "I was wondering which shoes you wanted."
"The black heels."
He nodded.
"Good choice. Guadalajara meetings are usually formal."
He knew the itinerary by heart.
Almost too well.
She watched him zip the suitcase.
"So..." he asked casually.
"You still leaving Tuesday morning?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Unless something unexpected happens."
For less than half a second...
His smile twitched.
Then it returned.
"Nothing ever happens," he laughed.
Laura smiled back.
Inside, every instinct screamed otherwise.
That night she waited until Eduardo fell asleep.
At 2:17 a.m., she carefully slid from bed.
His phone rested on the nightstand.
Face down.
Charging.
She knew the password.
Or at least...
She thought she did.
Daniel's birthday.
Wrong.
Their anniversary.
Wrong.
She tried the date they first met.
Wrong again.
The screen flashed.
One more failed attempt before temporary lock.
She froze.
Eduardo shifted in bed.
She gently placed the phone back exactly where it had been.
Too close.
She stepped into the hallway.
Her own heartbeat echoed in her ears.
Then...
She heard another sound.
A notification.
Not from Eduardo's phone.
From downstairs.
Someone else's.
Laura frowned.
Everyone else was asleep.
She slowly descended the staircase.
The living room sat in darkness except for the blinking light beneath Eduardo's office door.
His laptop.
She was certain he'd shut it earlier.
The screen glowed faintly.
Unlocked.
As if someone had forgotten to close it.
She hesitated.
Then opened the door.
The desktop displayed dozens of folders.
Taxes.
Insurance.
Business.
Family Photos.
Nothing unusual.
Until one folder caught her eye.
Project S
Just one letter.
No explanation.
She clicked.
Password protected.
Her stomach tightened.
Another folder sat beneath it.
Travel
Inside...
Her flight confirmation.
Hotel reservation.
Meeting schedule.
Copies of her passport.
Everything she'd expect.
Except...
There was another PDF.
She opened it.
The title made her blood freeze.
Asset Transfer Timeline
No company logo.
No legal header.
Just bullet points.
Tuesday
4:45 a.m.
Laura leaves.
7:30 a.m.
Bank appointment confirmed.
10:00 a.m.
Power of attorney activated.
Wednesday
Medical clearance.
Thursday
Property registration.
Friday
Funds finalized.
Laura read the list three times.
Medical clearance.
Again.
Why?
Money didn't require doctors.
She snapped photographs of every page using her phone.
Then another notification appeared.
An email preview.
Silvana: Everything is ready.
Laura opened it.
Attached was a single image.
An ultrasound.
Her breath stopped.
Beneath the image...
One sentence.
Soon we'll finally be a real family.
Laura nearly dropped the phone.
Pregnant.
Silvana was pregnant.
Eduardo wasn't stealing her company just to leave.
He was building another life.
Using hers.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Laura quickly closed the email.
Footsteps.
Someone was awake.
She switched off the office light and slipped behind the bookshelf beside the doorway.
Eduardo walked downstairs rubbing his eyes.
He entered the office.
Laura remained perfectly still.
He looked around.
Checked the laptop.
Then smiled.
"Probably the cat," he muttered.
They didn't own a cat.
He locked the computer.
Picked up his phone.
Typed a quick message.
Seconds later...
Laura's own phone vibrated silently inside her pocket.
Confused, she looked down.
It wasn't from Eduardo.
It was from an unknown number.
One message.
DON'T TRUST THE DOCTOR. HE'S NOT WHO YOU THINK.
Attached was a photograph.
A grainy image taken through a restaurant window.
Eduardo.
Silvana.
And an older man wearing a white medical coat.
All three were shaking hands.
Across the bottom of the photo someone had circled the doctor in red ink.
Laura zoomed in.
His face seemed familiar.
Very familiar.
Where had she seen him before?
Then she remembered.
Recovery room.
Three weeks ago.
Immediately after her surgery.
The same doctor who had smiled gently and told her...
"Don't worry.
Your husband has taken care of everything."
Her pulse thundered.
Had he known?
Had everyone known?
Upstairs, Eduardo climbed back into bed as if nothing had happened.
Laura remained hidden in the darkness, staring at the photograph.
One detail suddenly caught her attention.
The timestamp.
It wasn't taken recently.
It had been taken...
Six months before her surgery.
Which meant one terrifying thing.
This wasn't a sudden affair.
This plan had been growing in secret for half a year.
Maybe longer.
Laura slowly backed away from the office.
She needed Elena.
She needed the police.
She needed answers.
But before she reached the stairs...
She heard Daniel scream.
"Mom!"
Laura sprinted upstairs.
Daniel sat upright in bed, trembling violently.
His face was white.
He pointed toward the bedroom window.
"There was a man..."
His voice cracked.
"He was watching me."
Laura rushed to the curtains.
Outside...
The backyard was empty.
Almost.
Near the fence stood a single wooden rocking horse.
Daniel hadn't owned one since he was four.
Someone had placed it there tonight.
Tied around its neck was a small white envelope.
And written across the front in thick black marker were five words.
May you like
YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE FLIGHT.
