CHAPTER 11 The Crime She Couldn't Remember

Rain poured over the cemetery like the sky itself was trying to wash away the secrets buried beneath the ground.
Laura stood frozen.
The police officer's words echoed louder than the thunder.
You are under arrest for the murder of Isabel's husband.
Murder.
The word felt impossible.
Foreign.
Like it belonged to someone else.
Not her.
Not the woman who spent seven years packing Daniel's lunches and checking his homework.
Not the woman who cried when he lost his first tooth.
Not the woman who still kept his baby shoes in a drawer because she couldn't throw away memories.
"I didn't kill anyone."
Her voice came out quietly.
Almost like she was trying to convince herself.
The officer stepped closer.
"Elena Vargas, you need to come with us."
"My name is Laura Mendoza."
The stranger standing behind him smiled.
"No."
He shook his head.
"Your name is whatever we need it to be."
Laura looked at Eduardo.
"Tell them."
He didn't move.
"Eduardo."
Her voice cracked.
"Tell them."
Everyone looked at him.
The man who had lied to her for fourteen years.
The man who had protected her.
The man who had destroyed her.
Finally, Eduardo spoke.
"She didn't kill him."
The officer turned.
"Mr. Ríos, be careful."
Eduardo stepped forward.
"You know she didn't."
The stranger laughed softly.
"Still protecting her?"
Eduardo looked at him with hatred.
"You don't get to talk about protection."
The stranger's smile disappeared.
"You forgot your position."
"No."
Eduardo's voice hardened.
"I finally remembered mine."
The police officer raised his radio.
"Requesting backup."
Laura looked around.
They were surrounded.
She turned toward Isabel.
"Who was her husband?"
Isabel looked away.
That answer terrified Laura.
"Tell me."
Isabel whispered:
"Dr. Gabriel Valdés."
The name hit her like lightning.
Gabriel Valdés.
The doctor from the hospital.
The same man who had watched her sign documents.
The same man who had been part of the plan.
Laura looked at Eduardo.
"He's the man who operated on me."
Eduardo nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why am I accused of killing him?"
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew.
The truth was hidden somewhere inside her missing memories.
Seven years earlier.
A hospital.
A woman named Elena Vargas.
A dead doctor.
A missing identity.
A child named Daniel.
All connected.
All roads led back to one night.
October 12, 2019.
The day Elena Vargas supposedly died.
The day Laura Mendoza was born.
The police car ride was silent.
Laura sat in the back seat.
The officer across from her watched every movement.
Like she was dangerous.
Like she was a stranger.
Elena's face kept appearing in her mind.
Not as a memory.
As a ghost.
Images flashed.
A laboratory.
White walls.
A glass room.
A baby crying.
Someone screaming.
Her own voice.
But she couldn't understand the words.
She pressed her fingers against her temples.
"Stop..."
The officer looked up.
"Are you okay?"
She ignored him.
Another memory came.
A man in a white coat.
Dr. Gabriel Valdés.
He was shouting.
"You don't understand what you've done."
Then another voice.
Her voice.
"Daniel is not yours."
A gunshot.
Darkness.
Laura opened her eyes.
She was back in the police car.
Breathing heavily.
The officer stared at her.
"What did you remember?"
She looked at him.
"Nothing."
But it was a lie.
She remembered something.
Something terrifying.
At the station, they placed her in an interrogation room.
No lawyer.
No Elena.
No Eduardo.
Only a table.
A camera.
And a file.
The officer placed photographs in front of her.
First photograph.
Dr. Gabriel Valdés.
Second.
The hospital.
Third.
A blood-stained room.
Laura looked away.
Fourth.
A security image.
A woman entering the hospital.
Her.
Same face.
Same body.
Same clothes.
Timestamp:
October 12, 2019.
The night Gabriel Valdés died.
The officer leaned forward.
"You were there."
Laura shook her head.
"I don't remember."
"Convenient."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"I really don't remember."
The officer opened the file.
"We found your fingerprints."
Laura stared.
"What?"
"On the murder weapon."
The room became silent.
A knife.
A gun.
Something.
She didn't know.
The officer continued.
"Your DNA was also found at the scene."
Laura felt sick.
"Someone framed me."
"Who?"
She had no answer.
The officer smiled.
"That's the problem."
Hours passed.
Then the door opened.
Elena walked in.
Laura immediately stood.
"You found a lawyer?"
Elena didn't answer.
That was strange.
Very strange.
She closed the door behind her.
Then whispered:
"Laura."
"What?"
"You need to listen carefully."
Laura waited.
"Eduardo lied again."
Her heart sank.
"What now?"
Elena placed a folder on the table.
"I found the original investigation report."
"About Gabriel Valdés?"
"Yes."
"And?"
Elena opened the folder.
"The police never believed Elena Vargas killed him."
Laura frowned.
"Then why arrest me?"
"Because someone changed the evidence."
"Who?"
Elena looked at her.
"Eduardo."
Laura stepped back.
"No."
"I know."
"No."
"Laura..."
"He helped me."
"He also helped create this."
Elena pointed to the report.
"The original statement says Gabriel Valdés was investigating illegal experiments."
Laura's breathing slowed.
"And?"
"The last person he called before he died..."
Elena paused.
"...was Eduardo Ríos."
Laura couldn't speak.
The pieces moved.
Not fitting.
But moving.
Eduardo knew Gabriel.
Eduardo knew Silvana.
Eduardo knew Isabel.
Eduardo knew everything.
Maybe he wasn't just a victim.
Maybe he was the center.
Late that night, Elena managed to get Laura released temporarily.
They returned to Elena's apartment.
But before Laura could rest...
Her phone rang.
Eduardo.
She stared at the screen.
She wanted to ignore it.
She wanted to throw it away.
But she answered.
"Why did you frame me?"
Silence.
Then his voice.
"I didn't."
"Your fingerprints were on the weapon."
"I know."
"Your signature was on documents you didn't sign."
"I know."
"Your name was erased."
"I know."
Laura's anger exploded.
"Then what do you know, Eduardo?"
A long pause.
Then:
"I know who really killed Gabriel."
She froze.
"Who?"
His voice became barely audible.
"The same person who has been controlling everything."
"Who?"
Eduardo whispered:
"Your father."
The world stopped.
Laura couldn't breathe.
"My father died when I was a child."
"No."
Eduardo's voice cracked.
"He changed his identity."
"He created the entire program."
"And he has been watching you since before you ever met me."
Laura felt cold.
"That's impossible."
"Laura..."
Eduardo swallowed.
"The man you've been searching for..."
"He's not coming after you."
A pause.
"He's coming back for you."
The call ended.
At that exact moment...
The lights in Elena's apartment went out.
Then came a knock on the door.
Three quick.
Two slow.
Three quick.
Laura froze.
Because she recognized that pattern.
It was the same knock from the hidden messages.
The same signal used by someone who knew the truth.
Elena whispered:
"Who is that?"
Laura stared at the door.
And slowly realized something terrifying.
The person outside...
wasn't trying to get in.
May you like
They were waiting for her to open it.
