CHAPTER 6 The Wife Who Disappeared

Laura remained frozen in the storage room.
The fluorescent light above her flickered repeatedly, casting pale shadows across the photographs scattered inside the locker.
Two years of surveillance.
Two years of someone documenting her life.
Her routines.
Her weaknesses.
Her family.
Her son.
But the photograph on the bottom of the file was the one that destroyed everything she thought she knew.
Eduardo.
The doctor.
Silvana.
And the woman holding a little girl's hand.
The first wife.
Laura stared at the woman's face.
She had seen it before.
Not in person.
Not recently.
But somewhere.
A memory buried deep beneath years of ordinary life.
A name.
A conversation.
Something Daniel had said when he was younger.
She closed her eyes, trying to force the memory forward.
Then it appeared.
A rainy afternoon.
Daniel was five years old.
They had been looking through old family albums.
He had pointed at a photograph from Eduardo's childhood.
"Who's that lady?"
Laura had laughed.
"I don't know, sweetheart."
Daniel had frowned.
"She looks like the lady in Daddy's dream."
At the time, Laura had assumed it was a child's imagination.
Now...
She wasn't sure anymore.
Her phone vibrated.
She nearly dropped the file.
Unknown number.
Again.
For several seconds she considered ignoring it.
Then she answered.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Only breathing.
A woman's breathing.
Then a weak voice whispered,
"You found the locker."
Laura stood completely still.
"Silvana?"
"No questions."
"Where are you?"
"You don't have much time."
Laura gripped the phone tighter.
"What is happening?"
A pause.
Then Silvana said,
"Eduardo never chose you."
The words struck harder than Laura expected.
"What?"
"He studied you."
"No."
"He studied your business. Your health. Your family."
Laura looked around at the surveillance files.
"No..."
"He needed someone like you."
"Someone like me for what?"
Silvana's voice became quieter.
"To replace her."
Laura looked at the photograph again.
The woman beside Silvana.
The missing wife.
"Who is she?"
Another silence.
Then:
"Her name was Isabel."
The lights above Laura flickered.
"Where is she now?"
Silvana didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Laura already knew the answer.
"She's dead."
The phone suddenly went silent.
The call ended.
Laura immediately called back.
No answer.
She grabbed the file and rushed toward the exit.
But before she reached the door...
Something caught her eye.
A second folder hidden beneath the cardboard box.
Unlike the others, this one had no label.
Only a date.
Wednesday.
Tomorrow's date.
Laura opened it.
Inside was a single document.
A hospital consent form.
At the top:
PATIENT: LAURA MENDOZA
Her hands started shaking.
That was impossible.
She had never signed this.
She looked closer.
The signature at the bottom...
Was hers.
Her handwriting.
Her signature.
But the date was wrong.
The document was dated:
Three months before her surgery.
Laura felt sick.
Someone had prepared this long before she ever entered the hospital.
Then she noticed another detail.
The witness signature.
Eduardo Ríos Hernández.
And below it...
Silvana Armenta Ortiz.
Both had signed.
Three months before her surgery.
Three months before Laura even knew Silvana existed.
When Laura returned home, the house was dark.
Too dark.
Eduardo's car was gone.
Daniel's room light was on.
She rushed upstairs.
"Daniel?"
No answer.
Her heart stopped.
The bed was empty.
The window was open.
For one terrifying second, Laura couldn't breathe.
Then she heard a voice.
"Mom?"
She spun around.
Daniel stood in the doorway of the bathroom holding his toothbrush.
"I was brushing my teeth."
Laura grabbed him and hugged him so tightly he complained.
"Mom, you're hurting me."
She immediately released him.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"You found something."
It wasn't a question.
Laura stared at her seven-year-old son.
"What makes you say that?"
"Because you have the same face Daddy has when he's scared."
The sentence chilled her.
"What face?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"The face where he smiles but his eyes don't."
At midnight, Eduardo finally returned.
He entered quietly.
Too quietly.
Laura pretended to sleep.
She watched through barely opened eyes.
He stood beside the bed.
Looking at her.
For almost a full minute.
Not lovingly.
Not like a husband.
Like someone checking whether an object was still where he left it.
Then he whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Laura's body went cold.
Sorry?
For what?
He walked away.
But before leaving the room, he made a phone call.
She waited.
Then followed.
Again, she hid near the staircase.
Eduardo spoke softly.
"She found the locker."
Laura stopped breathing.
The person on the other end answered.
A man's voice.
"Then the schedule changes."
Eduardo sounded nervous.
"No. We can't rush."
"You said she would never discover anything."
"I was wrong."
A pause.
Then the man said:
"Tomorrow morning."
"What about Silvana?"
"She won't be a problem."
Laura's hand covered her mouth.
The call ended.
Eduardo turned around.
And for one horrifying second...
He looked directly toward where she was hiding.
Laura froze.
Had he seen her?
No.
His eyes moved past her.
He walked upstairs.
The next morning, Laura woke before sunrise.
She had made a decision.
No more hiding.
No more waiting.
She needed to know the truth.
She needed answers from the only person who might give them.
Silvana.
She drove back to San Gabriel Medical Center.
But when she arrived...
The entrance was surrounded by police.
A crowd had gathered.
A nurse was crying.
Reporters were asking questions.
Laura stepped closer.
"What happened?"
A woman nearby answered.
"You didn't hear?"
"What?"
"The patient who was supposed to have surgery today..."
Laura's heart began racing.
"Silvana?"
The woman nodded.
"She disappeared from the hospital last night."
Laura felt the world tilt.
"Disappeared?"
"Yes."
"But there were guards."
The woman lowered her voice.
"That's the strange part."
"Security cameras show her entering the private wing."
"She never appears leaving."
Laura looked toward the hospital doors.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, when she answered...
She heard Silvana.
But the voice was different.
Weak.
Terrified.
Whispering.
"Laura..."
"Where are you?"
"I don't know."
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then Silvana whispered the sentence that made Laura's blood freeze.
"They know I told you."
Laura looked around.
"Who?"
Silvana started crying.
"The same person who killed Isabel."
A loud sound interrupted the call.
A door opening.
Someone entering.
Silvana whispered one final sentence:
"Laura... run."
Then another voice came through the phone.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
A voice Laura had heard every morning for fourteen years.
Eduardo.
"Hello, Laura."
May you like
The call ended.
