Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Was Never DeadWe found Elena in a church outside the city.

She was sitting alone in the last pew.
Twenty-seven.
Dark hair.
Hazel eyes.
The same narrow jaw as my father.
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then she stood.
"You're Edward."
My throat tightened.
"You're Elena."
She smiled bitterly.
"That's what they call me now."
I moved closer.
She stepped back.
"I don't know you."
"I am your brother."
"I know."
The words hurt.
"How?"
"Because I've spent twenty-seven years being told who you were."
I stared at her.
"Who told you?"
"Your father."
She reached into her bag and removed a photograph.
It showed me at nineteen.
My father stood behind me.
Elena's mother stood beside him.
I had never seen the photograph.
"He loved you," Elena said.
"Did he love you?"
She didn't answer.
Instead she handed me a letter.
My father's handwriting.
Edward,
If you meet Elena, listen before you judge.
She was hidden because people wanted my family destroyed.
I couldn't protect both of you openly.
So I made one visible.
And one invisible.
I looked at Elena.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he believed you were safer not knowing."
"Safer?"
She laughed.
"Look around."
She was right.
My company was gone.
My marriage was broken.
My best friend was a traitor.
My wife had lied to me.
And someone was trying to steal half a billion dollars using my fingerprint.
"Did you have the ledger?"
Elena looked away.
"Yes."
"Where is it?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
She stared at me.
"Not here."
Rosa stepped forward.
"We need it now."
Elena shook her head.
"You don't understand."
"What?"
"The ledger isn't evidence."
I frowned.
"Then what is it?"
"A list of people who betrayed each other."
Harold looked confused.
Elena continued.
"Your father knew the network would eventually collapse. So he recorded not only payments, but leverage."
"Leverage?"
"Secrets. Affairs. hidden children. fake identities. illegal deals."
She looked at Vanessa.
"Your wife is not the only person who was forced to cooperate."
Vanessa lowered her head.
Marcus had been controlling people by threatening what mattered most.
Their families.
Their reputations.
Their futures.
"So what's in the ledger?"
"Everything."
"Then give it to me."
Elena hesitated.
"There's a problem."
"What?"
"The person who stole it knows where it is."
Silence.
"Who?"
She looked at Harold.
"Your friend."
Harold's jaw tightened.
"I never touched it."
"You didn't have to."
She pulled out her phone.
A video played.
Security footage.
Harold entering a vault.
Marcus Vale standing beside him.
Between them was a box.
The second ledger.
I stared at the screen.
Harold said something in the video.
The recording had no audio.
But the timestamp was visible.
Three months after my bankruptcy.
I turned toward him.
"You told me you didn't know where it was."
"I didn't."
"You're standing beside it."
"I was trying to recover it."
"From Marcus?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Harold stared at the floor.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of Marcus?"
"Of what the ledger would do."
I stepped toward him.
"You destroyed my life."
Harold's eyes filled.
"I destroyed your life to keep you alive."
I wanted to hit him.
Then Elena interrupted.
"Stop."
We turned.
She had pulled something from her jacket.
A small envelope.
She handed it to me.
"There is one more secret."
I opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
My name.
Vanessa's name.
And another name.
Mother.
Father.
Child.
But the child's name wasn't Elena Reyes.
It was Emily Calloway.
My daughter's real name.
I stared at the date.
Then at Vanessa.
"You lied about her name too."
Vanessa nodded.
"To keep Marcus from finding her."
I looked back at the certificate.
Elena's voice softened.
"My name isn't Elena."
She stepped closer.
"It's Emily."
The room went silent.
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed immediately.
"What?"
She listened.
May you like
Then looked at me.
"Your daughter is missing again."
