Chapter 11 - The False ConfessionWe had nine minutes to stop a transfer designed to prove I had stolen my own fortune.

Robert attacked the system.

Rosa pulled out the original paper records.

Harold stood silently.

I looked at him.

"You're coming with us."

"Why?"

"Because you know how they think."

He nodded.

The account transfer required three approvals.

My fingerprint.

A legal confirmation.

And a government authorization.

The first two were already complete.

The third was coming from Judge Cole.

The same judge who had signed my daughter's false custody order.

"How do we stop him?"

Robert shook his head.

"We don't."

"What?"

"We expose him."

He showed me a hidden protocol my father had created.

A transaction could be reversed if two original beneficiaries signed a challenge.

I was one.

The second beneficiary was Emily.

We needed her.

We drove toward the Keys.

On the way, Harold finally spoke.

"I should tell you the truth."

I looked at him.

"I've been waiting twenty years."

He swallowed.

"Your father asked me to watch over you."

"I know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't know how."

He explained.

After my father's death, Marcus approached Harold.

He offered him money.

Harold refused.

Then they threatened his family.

His wife.

His children.

Harold was forced to work as Marcus's inside man.

But instead of giving them everything, he secretly redirected money.

He had saved some of my fortune.

Those hidden stacks in the mansion.

"You were protecting me."

"At first."

"And later?"

"I became afraid."

"What happened?"

"Your father was right."

"About what?"

Harold looked ahead.

"Power changes people."

I said nothing.

He continued.

"When your company became successful, you trusted me more than anyone."

"Yes."

"I started believing I deserved a piece of what you built."

There it was.

The part he had never admitted.

"So you stole."

"Yes."

"You helped them."

"Yes."

I nodded slowly.

"I forgive what you did to survive."

He looked at me.

"But I don't forgive what you chose."

He accepted it.

When we reached the compound, the gates were open.

Too open.

Rosa whispered:

"It's a trap."

We entered anyway.

Inside, the mansion was empty.

No guards.

No cameras.

No sound.

Then the doors locked behind us.

A speaker activated.

My uncle's voice filled the room.

"Welcome home."

The walls opened.

Dozens of screens lit up.

Every screen showed me.

My bankruptcy.

My court appearances.

My arguments with Vanessa.

My conversations with Harold.

Even private moments from inside my bedroom.

They had watched me for years.

Then a video appeared.

Me.

Sitting in front of a camera.

Confessing to money laundering.

I stared.

"It's fake."

Robert nodded.

"Deepfake technology."

The video was perfect.

My face.

My voice.

My signature.

Everything.

Then my uncle appeared on a screen.

"By morning, the world will believe Edward Calloway stole half a billion dollars."

I looked at him.

"You'll never get away with it."

He smiled.

"We already did."

Then the screen changed.

Emily appeared.

She was standing in the same room.

Alive.

My uncle placed a gun against her shoulder.

"Give me the token."

I stepped closer.

"You want the money?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"I want the ledger."

"Why?"

"Because the ledger proves who my father really was."

He paused.

"And it proves who I really am."

I stared.

"What does that mean?"

My uncle smiled.

Then Emily shouted from behind him:

"UNCLE EDWARD, DON'T GIVE HIM THE LEDGER!"

My uncle turned.

The lights went out.

A single gunshot echoed.

When the lights returned, Emily was gone.

So was my uncle.

Only one thing remained on the floor.

The second ledger.

Open.

To the first page.

May you like

And written across it in red ink:

YOUR FATHER LIED TO YOU.
