Chapter 6 - The Account That Shouldn't ExistWe escaped through the east gate in an old delivery van.

For the first time in twenty years, I drove a vehicle without a driver.

Vanessa sat beside me.

Rosa was in the back.

Harold followed in another car.

Nobody spoke.

The silver token sat on the dashboard.

It looked worthless.

A small metal disk.

No numbers.

No markings except three tiny letters.

CBA.

I knew the name.

Calloway Bank Alliance.

A financial institution my father had helped create before I was born.

It no longer existed.

Or so I thought.

We stopped at an abandoned warehouse on the edge of Miami.

Rosa opened the metal case.

Inside was an old terminal.

"What is that?"

"A verification device."

"For what?"

"Your father's private account."

She inserted the token.

The screen lit up.

A single message appeared.

WELCOME, EDWARD CALLOWAY.

I stepped backward.

"How?"

"Biometric verification."

The screen asked me to place my hand on the scanner.

I did.

A second message appeared.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Then:

AVAILABLE BALANCE:

$487,230,114.19

I stared.

Nobody spoke.

Four hundred eighty-seven million dollars.

My fortune had not disappeared.

It had been hidden.

I sank into a chair.

"That's my money."

Rosa nodded.

"Most of it."

"Most?"

She opened another file.

"Another two hundred million moved through intermediary accounts."

"Where?"

"Europe. Panama. Singapore."

Harold looked at the screen.

"Those weren't your accounts."

"No."

"They were decoys."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

"Not all of it."

"You were involved."

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

"How deeply?"

Harold looked away.

"Deep enough to hate myself."

Vanessa sat beside me.

"Edward, I never wanted this."

I laughed.

"You moved millions."

"Because they threatened your life."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because they told me if I did, you would die."

I stared at her.

"Who told you?"

She didn't answer.

Rosa did.

"Marcus Vale."

The name meant something.

Marcus Vale was a billionaire banker whose companies had financed several of my developments.

He had publicly supported my expansion.

He had attended my wedding.

He had even given a speech when my oldest daughter was born.

I suddenly remembered something.

Three months before my collapse, Marcus had asked me to sell him twenty percent of Calloway Holdings.

I refused.

Two months later, my first partner disappeared.

Then the money began moving.

"It was Marcus."

Rosa nodded.

"Marcus created the shell companies."

Harold added:

"He recruited your partners."

"And Vanessa?"

"Your wife was forced to help."

I turned toward her.

"Forced?"

She nodded.

"The first time I refused, they showed me photographs."

"Of what?"

"My sister."

I frowned.

"You don't have a sister."

"I did."

She looked down.

"My sister disappeared fourteen years ago."

That silenced everyone.

Rosa reached for another document.

"Marcus has been collecting people for decades."

"People?"

"People who know too much."

I looked at the balance again.

"What does he want now?"

Rosa's answer was immediate.

"The second ledger."

"And if he gets it?"

"He can erase everyone connected to it."

"Everyone?"

"Judges. Bankers. Contractors. Government officials."

I stared.

"Then why keep the money?"

"Because the money is proof."

I understood.

The transfers proved where the network moved funds.

The ledger proved who approved them.

Together they could expose everything.

"Where is the second ledger?"

Rosa looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I hid it."

I stood.

"Where?"

She whispered:

"In your daughter's piano."

I felt a chill.

"Our daughter?"

"Yes."

"Which daughter?"

Vanessa looked at me.

"We only have one child."

My heart stopped.

"We have two."

"No."

She shook her head.

"We have one living child."

I stared at her.

Then I remembered the baby we had lost twenty-one years ago.

The child everyone said died during birth.

I could barely speak.

"You're telling me our daughter wasn't dead?"

Vanessa started crying.

"She survived."

I felt the room disappear.

"Where is she?"

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"She's Elena."

The missing daughter.

The one everyone believed had died in a plane crash sixteen years ago.

The truth hit harder than any gunshot.

The woman I had never known existed was alive.

And someone was hunting her.

Then the terminal beeped.

A new message appeared.

ACCOUNT TRANSFER REQUESTED.

Amount:

$487,230,114.19

Below it:

TRANSFEROR: EDWARD CALLOWAY

I stared.

Someone was trying to empty the account using my identity.

And the transfer required only one thing.

My fingerprint.
