Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Chose MeVanessa stood with a gun in her hand.

Her face was wet with tears.

"Let her go."

My uncle stared at her.

"You."

Vanessa pointed the weapon at him.

"You promised me she would never be hurt."

"Promises change."

"Not this one."

My uncle laughed.

"You betrayed us."

Vanessa's voice shook.

"I betrayed you the day I fell in love with Edward."

I stared at her.

She looked at me.

"I should have told you everything."

"Yes."

"I was afraid."

"I know."

"I hurt you."

"Yes."

She lowered the weapon.

"I am sorry."

My uncle reached for his gun.

I tackled him.

We crashed into the table.

The ledger hit the floor.

Marcus ran.

Charles froze.

Harold grabbed him.

Robert rushed toward Emily.

Rosa picked up the ledger.

For several seconds, the warehouse became chaos.

Then sirens erupted outside.

Real ones.

This time they were real.

Federal agents stormed the building.

My uncle was handcuffed.

Marcus was arrested.

Charles surrendered.

Harold stood beside me.

Emily was safe.

But the battle wasn't over.

An investigator approached.

"Mr. Calloway."

"Yes?"

"We found something in your account."

"What?"

He handed me a document.

The hidden account had been frozen.

But another transaction had already cleared.

Thirty-eight million dollars.

Transferred to an unknown person.

"Who received it?"

"We don't know."

I looked at the ledger.

"There has to be a clue."

Rosa opened the back.

A folded sheet fell out.

It contained one name.

Daniel Mercer.

The accountant from my grandfather's generation.

But Daniel had been dead for forty years.

Under his name was an address.

I knew the place.

The old family cemetery.

We went there that night.

The mausoleum was locked.

Rosa found a hidden compartment.

Inside was a steel box.

The box contained photographs.

Letters.

A USB drive.

And one final document.

It explained where the thirty-eight million dollars had gone.

Not to Marcus.

Not to my uncle.

Not to any criminal network.

It had been transferred to a charity.

A children's hospital.

Established anonymously fifteen years earlier.

I recognized the logo.

It was the hospital where Emily had been born.

I looked at Vanessa.

She started crying.

"You did that?"

She nodded.

"I took part of the money and moved it to children who needed it."

"You could have told me."

"I was trying to leave evidence somewhere they couldn't touch."

I looked at the hospital records.

Then at Emily.

My daughter stared at the documents.

"Mom saved people."

I nodded.

"She did."

But the final page contained one more secret.

The charity's founder.

Edward Calloway.

I looked at the date.

The charity had been created two years before my financial collapse.

I had never signed those papers.

Someone had used my identity long before the theft.

An investigator checked the signature.

Then looked at me.

"This isn't forged."

"What?"

"It was signed with your actual biometric authorization."

My blood went cold.

I had never approved it.

Which meant someone had access to my identity before any of this began.

Rosa whispered:

"Your father."

I turned.

"What?"

"Your father could have authorized it."

"But he died."

Rosa looked at the date.

"Exactly."

The charity existed after his death.

I stared at the document.

Then noticed a second signature.

One I didn't recognize.

Emily did.

She whispered:

"That's mine."

I looked at her.

"How could your signature be on a document created before you were old enough to sign?"

She stared at it.

Then said:

"Because that's not my signature."

Someone had forged both of ours.

But why?

The answer came from the USB drive.

And when we opened it, my father's final recorded message began with six words:

"The money was never yours."
