Chapter 14 - The Fortune That Belonged to EveryoneMy father's final message lasted seventeen minutes.

He explained everything.

The original fortune did not belong to the Calloway family.

It had been created from investments made using profits from land, development, shipping, and banking.

But decades earlier, my father discovered the money had been intertwined with corruption.

Bribes.

Fake contracts.

Political donations.

Hidden ownership.

He decided to separate the legitimate fortune from the illegal network.

He created the trust.

He created the children's hospital.

He created the hidden account.

And he prepared evidence.

But someone discovered the plan.

My uncle.

He wanted the entire fortune.

My father refused.

So they fought.

Then came the secret.

My father knew he might not survive.

He prepared a final safeguard.

If the Calloway family tried to steal the fortune, the trust would automatically redirect the legitimate assets toward hospitals, schools, and public foundations.

The family could not legally keep everything.

The stolen money would be returned.

The legitimate fortune would serve the public.

I listened in silence.

My father continued.

"If you are watching this, Edward, remember this. Wealth is not proof of worth. It is only responsibility made visible."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Emily.

"What do you want to do?"

She looked at the documents.

"Give it back."

"All of it?"

"Everything that isn't ours."

The investigators confirmed the process.

The legitimate assets would be separated.

The illicit funds would be recovered where possible.

The trust would fund the hospital and related programs.

My personal assets were smaller than the fortune I once had.

But for the first time, I knew exactly what belonged to me.

Not towers.

Not yachts.

Not private jets.

My family.

My daughter.

And the truth.

Harold was granted protection in exchange for testimony.

He agreed to testify against the network.

Marcus's accounts were frozen.

My uncle was charged.

Charles confessed.

Vanessa cooperated with investigators.

The case became one of the largest financial investigations in Florida history.

But one mystery remained.

The thirty-eight million dollars.

It still hadn't been found.

We returned to the mansion.

The house was nearly empty.

Again.

But this time, I wasn't bankrupt.

I was simply starting over.

Rosa walked through the rooms.

She stopped in front of the old dressing room.

The room where I had found the cash.

"There is something you still don't know."

I smiled.

"Another secret?"

"One more."

She pulled the carpet back.

A trapdoor appeared.

I stared.

"How many hidden rooms does this house have?"

Rosa smiled.

"Your father liked insurance."

We opened the trapdoor.

Below was a narrow chamber.

Inside was a safe.

The safe opened with Emily's fingerprint.

Inside was a document.

The title read:

FINAL BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT.

I read it.

The agreement named not only me and Emily.

There was a third beneficiary.

Rosa Martinez.

I stared at her.

"Why are you in this?"

She looked at me.

"Because your father trusted me."

"How much did he leave you?"

Rosa shook her head.

"This isn't about money."

She pointed at the final paragraph.

The third beneficiary was authorized to reveal the final account if the first two beneficiaries chose to continue the investigation.

I looked at Emily.

"Do we continue?"

She nodded.

Rosa opened another envelope.

Inside was an old map.

A location was circled.

Off the coast of Miami.

A private island.

There was one name written across it.

CALLAWAY ISLAND.

I had never heard of it.

Rosa whispered:

"Your father bought an island."

"Why?"

"To hide the last piece."

"What piece?"

She looked at me.

"The original ledger."

I stared at the map.

"What is in it?"

Rosa's face hardened.

"Every person who ever benefited from your family's fortune."

I folded the map.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Edward Calloway?"

"Yes."

"I know what happened to the thirty-eight million."

"Who are you?"

She breathed shakily.

"I'm the reason your father never trusted the government."

The line went silent.

Then she added:

"And I'm standing on Calloway Island."
