Chapter 8 - "Put the weapon down."Adrian's voice shook.

Vanessa held Emma tighter.
"I can't."
"You don't need to do this."
"You still don't understand."
"No."
"I did everything they asked."
Elena stepped forward.
"Who?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"The man who owns your family."
Daniel moved.
Vanessa raised the gun.
"One more step."
Daniel stopped.
Emma whimpered.
Elena forced herself to remain calm.
"Vanessa, look at me."
Vanessa did.
"You don't want to hurt her."
"No."
"Then let her go."
"I tried."
"Then try again."
Vanessa shook her head.
"Too late."
Adrian stared.
"What did they promise you?"
"A life."
"With what?"
"Claire."
Silence.
Olivia stepped forward.
"She's alive."
Vanessa's face changed.
"Where?"
"Upstairs."
"No."
"Yes."
"You're lying."
Olivia held up her phone.
A photo of Claire appeared.
Vanessa's knees almost gave out.
"Where did you get that?"
"She told us who you really are."
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
"She found you."
Adrian understood.
"You hid her."
"I protected her."
"From who?"
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Daniel.
"From him."
Daniel stared.
"Don't."
Vanessa laughed through tears.
"You always knew."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"She told me."
"Who?"
"Our father."
Adrian felt the room tilt.
Vanessa continued.
"He's alive."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Where?"
Vanessa pointed toward the study.
"Below it."
Adrian remembered the hidden room.
Another level.
Another door.
A structure beneath the house.
Maya rushed to the security panel.
"I can access the foundation maps."
The screen loaded.
Then stopped.
"There's a section missing."
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"Take us there."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because that's where he buried the truth."
Olivia spoke.
"And people."
Everyone turned.
"How do you know that?"
"I found another note."
She handed Adrian a folded piece of paper.
THE WALL BEHIND THE FIREPLACE.
Adrian moved to the library.
He pulled the fireplace lever.
The wall opened.
A staircase descended.
Vanessa lowered the gun.
Emma was crying.
Elena approached.
"Give me the baby."
Vanessa hesitated.
Then slowly handed Emma over.
Adrian exhaled.
"Thank you."
Vanessa looked at him.
"You still think I'm the villain."
"I don't know what to think."
"Good."
She gave a bitter smile.
"Now you're finally where I was ten years ago."
They descended.
At the bottom stood a steel door.
There was no handle.
Daniel pulled an old key from his pocket.
It didn't fit.
Maya examined the lock.
"Biometric."
"Whose?"
The system lit up.
ADRIAN VALE.
He placed his hand against the panel.
The door opened.
Inside was a circular room.
In the center stood a chair.
On the chair sat an old man.
Alive.
Adrian stopped breathing.
His father looked up.
"Hello, son."
Adrian couldn't move.
Daniel whispered:
"Father."
The old man smiled.
"You took your time."
Elena stared at the man.
He turned toward her.
"And you."
His smile faded.
"You should never have come back."
Elena felt the blood drain from her face.
"Back?"
He nodded.
"You were here once."
Then he pressed a button.
The room filled with gas.
Daniel shouted.
"GET OUT!"
The door slammed shut.
Adrian collapsed.
Elena grabbed Emma.
Olivia screamed.
And the old man watched them through the glass.
Calmly.
May you like
Patiently.
Like a man who had been waiting twelve years for this exact moment.
